I like Dragon Age a lot, but I love Mass Effect. When playing Mass Effect I felt that Shepard's story was my story, whereas with Dragon Age I always feel like I'm just along for the ride on someone else's. If I want to save the council, screw Cerberus out of the Collector base and cure the genophage I can do that. But if I want to give the Dalish lands in Ferelden, save Kirkwall from Meredith and abolish the Circle forever, then I am completely out of luck.

On Dragon Age the story is great and the maps are fun to explore (maybe not so much those on DA2) but the problem is the seemingly lack of creativity from Bioware, they either drop something on straight line or avoid touching the subject... Also, they love unnecessary cameos for their overrated club of characters from the first game.
On characters, both are great and I can't just pick a side.

Mass Effect without any hesitation. One of my most amazing video games experience.

One thing I always enjoy in Bioware games is their sly sense of humor. DA and ME were both really good at making me laugh. Based on playing time, DAI is my favorite, but maybe that is because I am retired now. My favorite aspect in games is character building. Once my character's build is essentially done, I'll often lose interest and start again. With DA and ME the stories were good, so I finished the game fairly often (for me at least). If I had to pick, I probably go for DA because I like fantasy, swords, and dragons more than science fiction, but ME (especially ME2) were really good. The Baldur's Gate games may be better than both DA and ME. My very favorite games were the old Wizardry series from SirTech.

I like both DA and ME. They have replay value which is number one for me. If I was to choose one over the other it would be Mass Effect

Dragon Age games great for what they are, but Mass Effect is an emotional experience like no other and there will probably never be anything truly like it again.
Mass Effect is without a doubt superior in every way, it's not even close.

I played the Baldur's Gate games as well but i can't really remember what they were like the only thing i can remember is that they were very good games and i loved playing them but that's it.

Love them both to bits and played each many times. I love the continuous protagonist in ME 1-3, the incredible story which unfolds through 3 games, building relationships with the comrades who were present through all three parts. (Not that the others are inferior, I just really like the development of inner stories from start to finish inside the main one).
But DA definitely wins for me. It also has great stories and incredible characters I love, but I prefer the fantasy setting to sci-fi in general and I prefer the combat system where I can control any party members. And I really fell in love with the universe of DA, when in ME the world for me is more of a just a backdrop setting. I've read all DA books and comics, I am yet to do it for ME (plan to eventually, but am not in a big hurry).

Weird to compare the two since they are so different, but if I had to choose then I say Dragon Age.
I love the story of the original Mass Effect trilogy, but DAO and DAI are both individually better games than the entire ME trilogy combined. Mass Effect had interesting story that I very much enjoyed, but the protagonist and the companion characters were always rather weak (especially when compared to DA). I'm very hopeful for Andromeda though, I hope it will bravely walk it's own path instead of just trying to repeat what the original trilogy did.
Dragon Age is more mature, it deals with difficult themes and always offers intriguing characters. I'm in love with it's lore and rich world full of mystery and wonder. Inquisition for me is the best DA game yet, it was wonderful emotional experience, I fell in love with the story and the characters - and especially my own Inquisitor. With Mass Effect the problem was that most of the alien races were really one-note and boring, the protagonist and their personal story didn't feel very interesting, the love interests weren't very good (no same-sex romances in the first two games for example and the ones in ME3 weren't all that good), the planets we visited were hardly interesting and there was very little to discover or explore... (note: it's been while since I last played the trilogy AND secondly I hope all this will be improved in MEA! Like I said I feel very hopeful for that game.)
One thing ME has always been good at is the music, great intense storytelling, etc. I loved the biotic powers I only wish they had been focus of the game instead of just something on the background that actually had no impact on the story or the main character and I loved Cerberus and the Illusive Man, the Reapers, the Quarians and the Geth...
Both games are awesome and I love them both.

ME wins so far for me, despite my utter hatred of aspects of how ME3 was handled.
Favourite game has to be ME2.

I enjoy the DA franchise but, for me, Mass Effect wins hands down. I enjoy the somewhat predefined character in Shepard over the blank slates, which is probably why I enjoyed DA 2 the most of all three DA games.

My thought exactly.
But if I had to choose, I would go with Mass Effect. I can't really say why, I just know it's Mass Effect over Dragon Age.

Preferred Mass Effect.
The protag's char. There could have been more of an inner struggle, especially ME2 to deal with the ramifications of being brought back again by an org she /he didn't trust. Shep never gave up the fight despite the odds.
The story (ME3 ending is a stain that Bioware can never cover or wash away)
The companions - Mordin Solus, tell me you never laugh at his funny moments, never appreciate his competence and accomplishments, never felt his anguish, and never cry / felt sorrow when he died to give the krogans life again. A death that cuts.
Liara who refused to give up on Shep. Garrus, ever steady, ever calibrating. Tali, faithful and trusting. Wrex, ever ready to butt heads and cover Shep.
Comedy : Biotic God!

I think both are amazing games, but i prefer Dragon Age. Mostly because Sci-Fi is my least favourite genre. I struggle to get into it. Though the fact Mass Effect is one of my favourites speaks of it's strength.
That said, i feel like Mass Effects story is stronger than Dragon Age's, because it is built on in each game. Dragon Age is getting a little silly with the fact Thedas can't stay saved for more than 2 years. But that's something of a minor detail in the grander scheme of things.
And i don't think any DLC has topped Citadel for me. Garrus and Zaeed made that for me

I've played DAO nine times, DA2 eight times, DAI five and a half times, so far. (Sixth Inquisitor is currently in progress, seventh and eighth and a replay of the first are planned. Hell, maybe I'll make a ninth one and try all the specializations. It looks like we've got vast acres of time before DA4.)
I've played each Mass Effect game ... once. Maybe I'll go back and play a renegade Shep some day, but I'm not in a hurry.
I liked the Mass Effect trilogy, but I don't love it like Baldur's Gate or Dragon Age, or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines or Pillars of Eternity, for that matter. There are a couple of main reasons for that. One is that I just don't like the gameplay that much. I don't enjoy shooters, and I don't like not having complete control of my companions in battle. (At least when my DA companions go charging off to tank thinks they shouldn't tank, I can take control of them and fix it.) The other is that I don't like the world building as much or find the ME galaxy as interesting a place as Thedas. The lack of female aliens other than the Asari for the first two games really, really damaged its verisimilitude for me. I also didn't feel that the continuing protagonist was handled particularly well.
I guess I'm still waiting for a science fiction cRPG that I love as much as the high fantasy and horror/urban fantasy ones that are my favourites. Ironically, the fact that I was less attached to Mass Effect than many others meant I wasn't upset by the ending. I thought the problems with the series went a lot further back than the last fifteen minutes of the last game.
Garrus is cool, though.
