I'll put it this way, I like Dragon Age but I love Mass Effect.

Easily the best gaming franchise I've ever played in all my years of gaming.

Mass Effect. I played the first game before DA:O and the nostalgia is strong. Also, it's easier to find other medieval fantasy settings in RPG, but the kind of sci-fi seen in ME is difficult to find.

But I'm going to break the mold here and say I like more my Dragon Age PCs than any of my Shepards. It's one of the reasons I don't mind changing protagonists in DA, because if the alternative is a Shepard, I'd rather keep my different DA characters.

I don't really like Mass Effect a lot. Shepard never felt like "my" character, or even much of her own character at all. I always felt like Mass Effect was 100 hours of the game trying to tell me how awesome and special I am, rather than telling a story of an interesting person with flaws. I think that's exactly what a lot of people want, but it just makes me yawn.

Dragon Age is my favourite game series, and my favourite universe, and Lavellan is one of my favourite protagonists.

So, easy choice for me.

I like Dragon Age: Origins more than Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 more than Dragon Age ][, and Dragon Age: Inquisition more than Mass Effect 3.

So overall I prefer Dragon Age as a gaming experience.

Weird to compare the two since they are so different, but if I had to choose then I say Dragon Age.

I love the story of the original Mass Effect trilogy, but DAO and DAI are both individually better games than the entire ME trilogy combined. Mass Effect had interesting story that I very much enjoyed, but the protagonist and the companion characters were always rather weak (especially when compared to DA). I'm very hopeful for Andromeda though, I hope it will bravely walk it's own path instead of just trying to repeat what the original trilogy did.

Dragon Age is more mature, it deals with difficult themes and always offers intriguing characters. I'm in love with it's lore and rich world full of mystery and wonder. Inquisition for me is the best DA game yet, it was wonderful emotional experience, I fell in love with the story and the characters - and especially my own Inquisitor. With Mass Effect the problem was that most of the alien races were really one-note and boring, the protagonist and their personal story didn't feel very interesting, the love interests weren't very good (no same-sex romances in the first two games for example and the ones in ME3 weren't all that good), the planets we visited were hardly interesting and there was very little to discover or explore... (note: it's been while since I last played the trilogy AND secondly I hope all this will be improved in MEA! Like I said I feel very hopeful for that game.)

One thing ME has always been good at is the music, great intense storytelling, etc. I loved the biotic powers I only wish they had been focus of the game instead of just something on the background that actually had no impact on the story or the main character and I loved Cerberus and the Illusive Man, the Reapers, the Quarians and the Geth...

Both games are awesome and I love them both.

This.

I love both series. Each game has it's flaws but overall it's their respective strong sides that stand out. My overall favourite would be DAI.

That said, i feel like Mass Effects story is stronger than Dragon Age's, because it is built on in each game. Dragon Age is getting a little silly with the fact Thedas can't stay saved for more than 2 years. But that's something of a minor detail in the grander scheme of things.

Well, technically, Thedas can't stay saved for more than six years (time between the end of the Fifth Blight and the Mage Rebellion).

DAI moved the series closer to Mass Effect in this regard, since it turns out that the Inquisitor didn't permanently save anything in DAI, which makes DAI a bit like ME1. Although I suppose the Inquisitor does defeat a major threat in Trespasser, unless we want to award the points to Solas.

As for the topic, I'm not sure I've got an answer. The two series have different strengths and different weaknesses -- although they're both obviously Bio-style RPGs -- and which one I like better depends mostly on my mood.

I prefer the Dragon age series. I like the fantasy genre better, I'm not to wild about shooter games and I'm not fond of Shepard.

Still, I like Mass Effect 1. It was lovely to cruise around planets, listening to spiffy music and shooting pyjaks in the face. The sequels are rather meh.

I like DA and If I set aside the ME3:s horrible ending I can say that I love ME.

I really love the whole concept of importing character along with choices and continue the story. which is what I wished DA would do for the warden after DAO

I like both DA and ME. They have replay value which is number one for me. If I was to choose one over the other it would be Mass Effect

Exactly the same with me I love both series to bits and they both have their epic and not so epic moments. but I think that's the case with all games. If I had to choose one over the other it would be ME as I prefer a scifi  story over a pure fantasy one.

But I do love the fantasy that's in DA especially playing as a super powerful badass mage that as Anders likes to put it shoots lightning at fools. My favourite DA game is DAI. I think for me the main reason for me that DAI wins is that it has the epic scale story that DAO has and it combines it well with the best parts of DA2 which for me was the humor also I think the faster paced combat as well. As DAO's combat does at times feel a little sluggish. All in all though all 3 games are great though

My favourite of the 3 ME games is ME2 because of the shear range of missions you get to do some where you will  need to blast away a lot at things others where you won't need to fire off a shot. My favourite DLC is the Shadow broker. Purely because I find it an epic side mission that has little bit of everything from chasing down a rogue Spectre to blasting away at the Shadow broker in his own chambers

Yes, me too. ME3, as far as single player is concerned, is rather on the short side. The Citadell DLC is the major redeeming factor.

As far as replayability goes, it's the DA series. I only played Origins and Inquisition and gave DA II a pass for several reasons. But overall I would say, there isn't a versus. Both games have their roleplaying elements, but the ME series is basically a pretty linear adventure/shooter. Also dialogue options are much richer in DA:I than they were in any ME game. To tell the truth, when I feel like loosing myself in another world, I rather go with DA.

Cant say I love ME but I Love DA, as much as I disliked DA2 there were characters I loved and moments between characters that made me replay it which is quite the feat believe me. I fell in love with so many companions in DAO, DAA, DA2 and DAI - when a game makes you sob for hours when a character dies (DAO) nothing else even comes close. No contest for me its DA.

I tried to like Mass Effect.  It has space.  I like space! I'm a bona fide space loving nerd.  But, I hate using a gun as a weapon in video games.  So I couldn't ever finish it.  I'm just not into that as my primary weapon of choice unless its comical like Ratchet & Clank.  I'd much rather run someone through with a sword (although that's only my jam either.  I'm more of a shooting lightning from my fingers/stabby stabby rogue assassin type).

DA by far because I prefer mostly a blank slate protagonist. Shepard never feels like my character. Also in DA series I get to switch between companions in battle whereas ME does not allow that.

They are both right at the top of gaming... And I wouldn't hive either up. This is an actual tie for me... ME might have edged it if ME3 didn't stumble at the end, but we got the Citadel DLC out of it so it kept even with DA at least.

Hm, I loved DA:O, ME2, and (to a lesser extent) ME1 but I think DA:O beats ME1 and 2 for me. I really loved the different origins and being able to play as a non-human and I thought the random sidequests were really nice and helped flesh out the lore and the culture and made the world feel more alive. I do prefer the combat of ME as a series and liked the paragon and renegade interrupts, those should be in more games ^_^

ME3 (no, not just the ending) killed my enthusiasm for the series as a whole. Though I still think of ME1 and ME2 fondly, I can't bring myself to play them anymore. I don't know anything about the new one they're making, nor do I care to.

Both DA2 and DA:I had good parts but overall I felt negatively about them. It started me thinking that BioWare just doesn't make the kinds of games I want to play or tell the stories I want to experience anymore. Trespasser gave me hope that I was wrong, sparked my imagination with the kind of story they could tell with an inquisitor vs Solas story but though we're not sure yet it looks like they're not going to follow through on the story they set up in Trespasser. I would not want to play a possible DA4 if the inquisitor isn't the protagonist (I know, I know, that's most likely the case) but unlike Mass Effect I may play some future DA if the player reviews are really good.

It's tough. I greatly prefer the scifi theme over medieval/faux-Renaissance fantasy, but I find DA to be an overall richer experience. Companions are more dynamic. Despite the setting being confined primarily in a single country or continent, the world feels bigger. The antagonists, to me, are superior in just about every respect. Companions are more dynamic and reactive, and the PC's dialogue tends to offer a lot more content as well, with far fewer instances of autopilot sequences. In terms of gameplay, Mass Effect is superior, but in terms of storytelling, I find myself more drawn in by its counterpart. If I had to compare my takeaway between Origins and ME1, the former beats the latter by miles insofar that I felt much more satisfied in how that story concluded. Obviously this isn't entirely fair because ME leaves you with a sequel hook, but that doesn't necessarily serve the individual game particularly well when the other provides such a complete story right off the bat.

I think Dragon Age is the better put together series when all is said and done, but I have had more fun with Mass Effect overall.

Kind of a tough question considering how certain large screw-ups affect my overall view of things (yeah, you know what I'm talking about), but I can say with absolute certainty that ME's multiplayer is far superior to DA's.

So far they both are two great trilogies that provide different narrative experiences for me. Mass Effect to me felt more about the characters then the actually universe. Sure we wanted to save the world but we always felt more connected to Shepard and the people he interacted with. While Shepard story was cool to experience, Dragon Age way of telling the story is more unique and standsout compared to plenty of series. In that we get more connected to the world of Dragon Age itself, while yes we are still connected to our Wardens and Hawks and Inquisitors. We still will have that greater connection to the actual Dragon Age because we got to experience thedas from the viewpoint of 3 different heroes. While some people play all 3 heroes the same and may have there heroes all pro mage or pro chantry or pro elf I prefer to take advantage of the opportunity to have all 3 of my heroes different. And that is the advantage the dragon age series has over many others. No matter how pro mage your Warden vs it was a different pro mage then your Hawke because the experiences and companions were all different. While my Warden was unbiased on the issue my Hawke was pro mage and my Inquisitor was pro templar. I can experience one portion of the Dragon Age timeline supporting mages and seeing how that effects the world then the next game I can play another character who supports templars and even though its a sequel I dont have to headcanon or feel like my character is bipolar because this isnt the same character from the last game. Its a brand new set of eyes set in a world that I played a part in establishing since Origins. Having the chance to meet a old companion of one of my former heroes and interact with them differently then I did the last time. Not only was my character meeting them for the first time like Morrigan for example but I the player get to catch up on her life the parts I never got to see or experience. That to me will always give Dragon Age the edge overmany gaming series. Every series is connected, old and new all at the same time.

Dragon Age by far. While I like Mass Effect, I find the setting, lore, characters, gameplay, and themes of DA to be much more interesting and fun. That said, I am looking forward to Andromeda, but more as something to play while I wait for DA4.

Even with all of its story line flubs I am obsess with DA:O and DA:I. As far as DA:2 I can't stay interested in playing it and for me a complete waste of money.

I won't be buying any ME games.. I hate shooting games of any kind.

I still play Baldur's Gate 1 & 2..

To tell the truth 90% of my games are RPG while the other 10% is NASCAR.

Perhaps a bit tough for you to contribute in this thread then, if you never have and never will(?) play one of the series we're supposed to compare? ;)

You'll miss something though, I thought exactly like you before picking up ME1 but got one of the best gaming experiences ever. You can play as biotic, which is as close to magic you can come in ME.

Still, I can't select a "winner" from the two series; they both encompass unique strengths and weaknesses.

Dragon Age for me, definitely. While I like sci-fi and SPAAAAAACE (ohmYGOD SPACEEE! itS SO BIG AND COOL AND COLOURFULL!), I still prefer fantasy more. Partially because all the metal and cleanliness in sci-fi feels cold and lonely, while the grit and grime in medieval fantasy settings really builds warmth and character. Silly reasons, I know :')

On top of that I feel that DA handles the companions better than ME. Also, DA gets bonus points for providing s/s romance from the start.
