Hello, #MassEffectNation!

As any Mass Effect fan would agree, there are many Feels to be had while playing any one of the Mass Effect games.  One major part of these feels was the music accompanying those moments.  I know of several people, myself included, who searched YouTube for these soundtracks just to listen to them and relive these moments!

Nothing has been said about the musical composition yet (Yanick Roy himself via Twitter even said such information won't be released for quite some time), yet we are assured that the musical composition will be what we expect from a Mass Effect game.

However, I wonder:  What if its not?  What if the soundtrack has a different vibe to it?  Maybe one that doesn't fit the game all that well in your opinion, or one that just quite doesn't carry the Feels like the previous soundtracks have?

Would that just pretty much destroy the game for you?  Would it impact the experience so much that it just wouldn't be the same?

In my opinion, it would and it wouldn't.  I'd still play the game, the whole way through, but I would miss the "Old Mass Effect", and to me it would just feel different.

What do you think?

Well I can say this - when I first played ME3 and walked out of the elevator onto the Presidium Commons the old ME1 Citadel music started up.  That, along with having had no Presidium in ME2, gave me the biggest dollop of feels and it stands out as one of my fondest memories of the game.

So the music is vitally important, but having a musical link to ME1/2/3 like the galaxy map or the music when you first see the SR2, will bring back those moments, those goosebumps, and let me know that yes, this is a Mass Effect game, and I'm home again.  ^_^

I'll still play if I'm not into the music, but respecting some of those techno/electronica tracks from ME1 is kinda important for me.  (okay, I have no idea what genre they are, don't shout at me if I got it wrong  )

I agree completely!  Anytime I heard anything from the ME1 soundtrack in ME2 or ME3, the nostalgia hit me hard!

If I hear the Vigil or ME1 Theme in Mass Effect Andromeda I'm going to explode from feels.

I wouldn't mind if it's different from the older mass effect, as long as it's good and fits the theme. But having a good background soundtrack is hugely important to me. It's one of those things that makes a game really standout. For example other than mass effect, Skyrim, Crisis, the Assassins Creed series, Witcher 3, Bloodborne and so on have some amazing soundtracks and it's a big factor in giving those games their intended atmosphere. So it's pretty damn important!

The music in the trilogy is sucky and annoying especially on a radio and elevator music, and that's why I put my headphones on listening music on my phone while playing ME. I think they should put David Beageaurd, Jesper Kyd, or Harry Gregson-Williams to do music with ME:A honestly.

I dunno, some of its pretty good though imo. Leaving Earth still gives me goose bumps!

EXTREMELY important.

Listen to this and tell me if you can imagine Mass Effect without it. Whoever says "yes" has no soul.

Music always adds to the games. When I think of a game that has nailed it with music.  I think Mass Effect.  I expect them to nail it yet again.

I like the battle music from the overlord DLC, and I'm also a really big fan of the space menu in ME2.  Obviously ME3 did amazing as well.

To me a soundtrack is very important, but not as much that it would stop me from playing a game. I've endured some really bad soundtracks in order to play games, so I'm prepared, even though I doubt they'd screw it up.

That said, I loved all 3 soundtracks for ME and I'd be extremely happy to see Sam Hulick return. He composed many of my favourite tracks in the trilogy, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's him (plus various others). The recent stuff he uploaded on his YT channel feels very Mass Effect-y, even if they're not for the game.

Depends. Sometimes I play the game with no background music at all. You know, Shepard don't fight listening to a playlist of the best collection of Jack Wall and Sam Hullick and space is silent. It was actually really good since you began to pick up things you miss and honestly, everything is heightened and I start to appreciate the audio folks more especially in ME3.

Besides, since its a game where you can toggle the music and sound effects, you can actually play the game and listen to a different mix instead.

I use Battlestar Galactica OST music in one of my trilogy playthrough last year. It still gives me goosbumps when I listen to Raya Yarbrough praying in sanskrit during Shepard's death in ME2. Listening to Passacaglia and its piano version during romance scenes. Listening to Prelude to War with its heavy military theme during the battles in ME1 and ME3. All Along The Watchtower as the finale for ME2 with the Reapers coming and the ending of Arrival. Somehow classical ethnic music really fits with Mass Effect as it did with BSG.

Either way, I was at Video Game Live late last month and listened to a full orchestra of some of Mass Effect music. Make me teary the whole session. I didn't realize there's also vocals in the themes.

Music in any game is important to me. A solid soundtrack can give you so much. It can give you the feels at the right moment, make exploration more interesting, give combat the much needed feel of urgency. So music is one of those things that ties the whole experience together.

The Suicide mission track is still my favourite, it has everything and added so much to the whole sequence.

Music is essential to the atmosphere of story-driven games, IMO. Mass Effect is no exception.

For instance, A Future For The Krogan made the whole Tuchanka sequence that much more epic.

The part where Eve was about to give her speech, the music shift was amazing, right when she shouted "Enough!"

The composers are masters at matching music with the emotions a scene portrays.

This exactly.

I love the soundtrack of the original trilogy and listen to it quite often. It is so good and immediately takes you back to all those amazing moments in the games. So yes music is important that shouldn't even have to be said. But even if it's not as good this time I don't think it would 'destroy' the game for me.

Mass Effect had great soundtracks and I hope the new one will continue the trend. Even DA:I (may it burn in hell forever) had a good soundtrack (although the bard songs were overhyped).

Btw... what are these "feels" people mentioned in the thread? Are we above writing "feelings" or "emotions" now? "Feels" sounds infantile.

I think anything other than a soundtrack with a familiar Mass Effect vibe would be disappointing, even if I liked the tracks. Some fan suggestions in the music threads we've had over the years would take me out of the setting, if Bioware were to take them up on it.

I think the soundtrack is a huge part of Mass Effect, they always nailed it. From epic moments (Reaper Chase) to emotional scenes (An End, Once And For All) and the iconic themes (Vigil Theme).

So yes, i'm certain that Andromeda will have an epic soundtrack.

Yes, and yes, the soundtrack of Andromeda need to maintain the old trilogy soundtrack, because it needs to be Mass Effect, but it need to be more too, needs to be fresh and new and remember the classic soundtrack at the same time, so Bioware have a beaultiful hardwork ahead. We need to go onward, but not forget the past. that's my opinion anyway.

Music is an important part of any game for me to be honest. The first thing I noticed when I played Mass Effect for the first time was the music.

I wish they would go back to ME1s electronic style of music, though.

For example...
