There are lies, damned lies and - statistics (quoted Benjamin Disraeli : 1895, sometime misattributed to Mark Twain - but only by those with a smaller universe)

The one that gave me these statistics was shot in the foot and died with a concussion so I never got the source :

Figures are in percentage, datestamped 21 Mar 2016.

VIjEuSS.png

Total player base ito licences bought = 1390469 (1.4m) overall total timstamped = thisweek. Interesting to note is that country with more players than owned licences ... yep even those are known.

For last week the median time that players were online were 2H05 per day, the mean time was 5h32 which means there are some real junkies out there stil. I personally believe it's people simply logging in, like Pierogi and then do other stuff like washing, getting on the cat's nerves, etc. while we are waiting in the lobby, hehe. And no Arkhne :), I'm not getting into another median and mean "are all the same" discussion again - you can argue with your wife on this one - she's fiery enuf already.

Those are very interesting stats Fuenf (assuming that you didn't invent them :P). I'm not surprised by the weight of the US, it's quite difficult to find games when it's too early in America. Same on the forum : it's quite asleep when it's the night in the US.

But 5h32 as mean time ?  It means that there are probably a lot of people in the 8h range : pretty much a full-time job for them !

What we can learn from this, is that Americans are packing.

No representation for the Irish? For shame.  I guess still recovering from St. Patrick's Day.

It could be all the alt accounts that were forgotten to log off?

I should have played this weekend and added my own weight to it.  I used to ME3MP at least 8 hours a day back when I was hoping they would write a decent ending.

You're right - interesting. If we take into consideration (Max Daily concurrent players) :

Spoiler

and max players per hour

Spoiler

(ie that last peak was 485 @ 22:01 on 21 March 2016 - Maybe that is measured from the main server time zone ).

  • Then 08:00-9:00 is when most BSN'ers are having breakfast ;)
  • Wednesdays BSN community goes out to get a life.
  • ...and that the MEA: delay announcement in March didnt drop the motivation of the MP fans - so this is an extremely core remaining loyal base.
  • On Christmas and New Year MP fans rather preferred to be online (double the numbers) instead of spending time with mother in law or playing outside with visiting nephews and nieces. Quite an antisocial lot, them.
  • It looks like these hits are accounts registered as online (Origin/PSN/XB)(so there is maybe whitenoise from SP players -But since SP players have no one waiting for them in a lobby - they can play when they want - and unless they are highly disciplined, one can simply id them by finding the mean on weekdays and removing the difference as a very rough and dirty measure).

^Another way to look at late january decline is ending of Holidays is some countries.

So much BS in statistics, I don't even know where to start in pointing out just how irrelevent the data is, but this is the sort of BS that runs the market and decides what games get made, and how.

less statistics more gaming

on that note if OP's stats are accurate that would mean more players relative to population in the UK vs US

assuming the stats I got for the populations are accurate

I though you were being sarcastic at first but that quote's about the shady nature of statistics. Ironic that you'd put that before a post on the statistics of player data...... unless that is what you wanted.

Also what with all the bias that goes into these statistics, some of them intentional and others just a byproduct of ignorance, I'd really advice against making inferences from these data or at the very least take it with a big pinch of salt!

By "licenses bought" do you mean total copies of the game sold to date?

yep - on the shady nature.

yep - on purpose before player statistics data - Goebbels orginally said : "Traue keiner Statistik, die Du nicht selber gefälscht hast" /Trust no statistics that you haven't falsified yourself. Churchill liked the proverb so much that he borrowed it from Goebbels. Because I was not responsible for drawing this statistics - and the messenger died already - this is my disclaimer of saying I also don't know how to interpret it.

Yep - I can only underline what TB is saying - So unless you are sitting next to the physical server and know exactly how it is working, what fields are considered, what is in every line of code, which data are thrown away or omitted - you will not have the 100% certainty. Still I found it interesting enough to post here, because it gives some hints on speculations I had before. So certainty is between 0% and 100%. Ofc I welcome those that have better references to correct me.

I can only interpret that graph same as you (don't have more info) - when one adds them all together it gets to 100%.

Don't know how to interpret owners vs players either (but they're so similiar that it is probably an internal differentiation i.e people buying a license from one regional store, but registrering themselves in another country - idk)

I understand "owners" as people who bought the game, and "players" as people who were online playing ME3 MP on march 21 2015 (or on the week / month... before this date).

Maybe if we can get some external player base stats we will know whether 1.4 million is PC only or PS3/XB or combined.

"During March 2012, Mass Effect 3 sold over 1.5 million copies.[168]"

Wiki citation, but the ref link is dead. Anyway, seems safe to assume far more than 1.4 millions copies sold.

mmmm you're right - do you think it is really 1.4m still online (out of the 10 million that Originally bought it?). Can it possibly be still that much? Any given day ca 20k (that's 833 every hour)
here is another graph that gives the players - its says two weeks but the scale is days so the 2 weeks is maybe a moving average.
