Being an RPG I'd like a protagonist with a variety of backgrounds you can pick from but as to what's available I'd rather wait and see what Bioware has in mind.

I already liked what they did in the original.. those background combos were simple, but flexible. One player's Earthborn or Colonist can be very different from someone else's. I only wish they were more playable or reactive. Even for a one race protag, there was more flexibility in Shepard than the Inquisitor. Those were too specific, and they tied speciific career types to races (like all human rogues were noble... they didn't have a cool worldly or commoner background).

I like to be able to change allegiances on a whim and pursue my personal goals without being stuck to the same position (Alliance lapdog).

yeah so did I really I'd like the option of playing someone that's not specifically military but has military training or something like a scientist type character maybe someone like a Kahlee Sanders or something along those lines I think that could be interesting. But I think it's definitely important to stick a fwe options as some may prefer the straightforward militqary bqackground and in some playthrough's I might as well. I think it would be nice to just see some variety

A snarky one with a fondness for dank memes.

I'm firmly in the camp hoping protagonist will be the Picard to Shepard's Kirk.
I wanted to be a smartass this time.. and a scientist. Maybe a little like Joker.

I'd like a protagonist who has the option to not be a drooling idiot or frothing at the mouth lunatic in (most) scenes.

Billed and advertised primarily as the female rather than the male counterpart.
I get it, male characters are more marketable, but sheesh. Every RPG I've ever played uses a male character as the default/marketed character, or the character is canonically a guy. Having it be a female just for once would be nice.

I wouldn't mind, but I don't think it'd make it more interesting. RPG protagonists don't have much to offer..whatever gender. Not like a very defined character like Lara Croft or something. A cool female would have to be a cool person first. But as far as generic templates go, male has wider appeal just by virtue of the audience type and the kind of fantasies they'd like envision themselves with.
I'll probably play a female myself btw..

Tbh I think that's what she's saying as Picard was very much a thinker than a gung ho type character. Whereas Kirk was more gung ho. I quite often have played my Shepard a bit like that where I could.

Yeah, I like the scientist bit of Picard. Nice change from a soldier.
But he's no smartass. Like someone said above, a sarcastic Hawke type.. or just some clever character.

I'd like to have my rpg character to be like I want him to be. No preset bullcrap like the one I've seen in ME2 and ME3.

I suppose you're right that it is preset...
But I see it differently since I start with ME1.. and have an idea in my head from that. The actual options from game to game aren't too different. It's not like ME1 was a good roleplaying game either. It just made more nods to the origins.

Do you think that in ME2 I could choose to not end like a marmelade-spacemarine and then being "resurrected" as practical clone?
Or did my choices in ME3 actually mattered when it came to have an impact on the game progress?
At least ME1 let me choose the very first basic things: my origin; and then the rest of the stuff: I saved some sorry arse who was manipulated by Cerberus, I had to choose between Kaidan and Ashley, I could even bring Saren to the extreme solution of suiciding by my very touching words. And the list could go on.

I thought ME2 handled your squad views far better than Ash/Kaidan.. but I agree that was missing more from ME3. They were gonna do that with the VS and Liara apparently, but that was with the old javik story.
I'd like origins back too though.. I'd like them to be even better.

Maybe some recency bias since I just finished The Wolf Among Us a few weeks ago, but I'd love to play a protagonist like Bigby Wolf again. I wish BioWare's protagonists had a bit more conflict or doubts from their peers and less hero worship.
