This. In addition, Ferelden is a relatively small country (we know you can get to Denerim from Redcliffe in 2 days), and the templars are not only present already in Ferelden, they are there entrenched and in large number. We also see how their entire army marched from Therinfal Redoubt to Haven if you sided with the mages... and Ferelden did absolutely nothing, they couldn't even warn Haven. And Teagan? I doubt the Redcliff militia would have made any difference. I mean, they couldn't even stop the mess in the Hinterlands.

An yes, the Mages were never inside the castle, they were in the village (as evidenced by the elderly mage in the tavern). And the village is not some invincible stronghold. They were basically as defended as Haven was (a wall and some wooden palisades), and we see how that turned out....

they can make it into the fortress fairly quickly I imagine, it happens in DA:O with the townsfolk after the darkspawn attack

Ten years if you believe what Alexius says, which is very much in doubt.  Especially after he meets the Inquisitor and he's suddenly "altering the arrangement".  If Fiona had two brain cells to rub together, she'd know (even without the knowledge of time travel) that Alexius was playing her for a fool and his offer was not in good faith.

Well, by that point, the Venatori are already entrenched and Fiona can't do anything.

Yeah, she cant try to renegotiate, she can't try to rally her mages against them, all she can do is stand there and take whatever scrap Alexius deigns to give her.

If Fiona automatically joined you upon you just going to her, there wouldn't be much of a game would there?

there could be a storyline around throwing out the venatori as opposed to time travel nonsense

Time magic already exists, such as in the Still Ruins, Ameridan's time stop spell, and the necromancer Haste focus ability

none of those are dropping us off into the future the bringing us back Time Machine style.

I'm fine with time magic, not time travel, there is a difference.

Then would anyone even consider going to the templars?

Maybe it's because I'm a Stargate SG-1 fan but I loved the time travel stuff. Plus you get the most badass line in the whole game. "You will die by my hand... again." XD Dude's reaction was priceless.

And as a plus I got to conscript the whiny mages.

That said, after doing the Templar side, I must admit that it is my preferred choice. It gives you a much more compelling enemy to fight, the Venatori and Calpernia. She's far better at being a Villain than friggin what's his face. Samson or whatever. Like, seriously? That loser is your Templar go to, Cornflakes? Whatever. Venatori en masse also make for a better enemy than mutant Templars. Though the red lyrium stuff was indeed very freaky and intimidating.

Besides that, to me it just makes sense that if you want to bring order to a land that's not only fighting amongst itself, but also being attacked by an ancient magister and demons, you go to the guys that specialize in killing mages and demons... Just me.

Also feels right proving to them that you're the Herald of Andraste. In their eyes anyway. Should also point out I'm (obviously) a non mage human trevelyan, so for others, the mage side might make more sense.

There is always a choice.  Even if the choice sucks, you always have one.

Fiona chose to fight while surrounded by Templars just itching to start annulling Circles, with a divided Conclave half of which didn't want to fight at all, and in the middle of the Orlesian empire.

In Redcliffe, she chose to meekly serve Alexius tea and shine his shoes as he led her fellow mages off to war and slavery.

And if you're criticizing both choices, you sound as though you're talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Gotta admit, Fiona had a singular talent for taking a bad situation and making it worse   ;)

At any rate, I don't deny Fiona had legitimate grievances against the Circle system.  But at White Spire she acted foolishly and without consideration for the consequences.  At Redcliffe, she showed extreme poor judgement.  Again.

Your opinion is noted. Personally, I consider Fiona completely unimportant in my assessment of which path to take.

Fiona is the catalyst, but the other mages went along with her foolish plan.

What exactly did you expect them to do? The venatori ousting Teagan pretty much ensured that the mages either had to stay with the venatori for protection or face the threats of Thedas alone which is exactly what happens after the venatori are dealt with. Afterwards, the ferelden monarchy exiles the mages from Ferelden.

Tell me, what do you expect the mages to when the choices are indentured servitude or exile without protection anywhere. You love criticizing the mages for not rebelling but you never say what they should have done.

For starters, if the Inquisition came to Redcliffe, the mages who protested the alliance could've come with them (like Connor and Lysas).

In my games the Templars will rot.. I need mages not self righteous Templars.
