Let's all move on, shall we?

As of now, I have a question: Would you have liked to pass judgment on Fiona as we did Denam? If so, what options would you have liked to see in regards to her judgment?

Dean posted a good scenario:

What I would have appreciated just as much or more is not just the judgement, but to express the motive of why. One of the things about Denam's judgement is that the options changed slightly depending on if you found the corpse of the Knight-Vigilant. I'd have liked it if the discovery of the Tranquil could get a similar response.

So, in terms of mapping, you'd get your

-Basic judgement introduction

-Inquisitor's question, Fiona's defense

-Judgements

Judgements could be along the lines of

Guilty (With corresponding punishment)

-Mage rebellion unjustified (death for leading the Mage Rebellion and throwing the world into chaos)

-Complicity with Alexius rather than help stand against him (removed from Circle, conscript as an agent)

-Selling the mages into slavery, betraying that 'death before freedom' rhetoric of the rebellion (imprisonment rather than the new mage freedoms)

-Betraying Ferelden, untrustworthy (exile)

-(If Found) Failing to protect the Tranquil under her watch (Tranquility)

Not Guilty (No punishment, with Follow-on Dialogue for justification)

-Mage rebellion justified

-Blame Alexius

-Need for reconciliation to move on after the rebellion

-Saw the future which she was a victim, not complicit

So a Judgement in which the player can express a position on Fiona independent of their views of the mages, with both pro-Fiona defenses or anti-Fiona judgements depending on the player's position.

So, according to Tumblr, the great big question appears to be whether Fiona was whitewashed in DAI or not.

There's people scouring the books, using things like Fiona thinking of another character's skin as the color of porcelain in order to prove she was never White.

JB we just escaped a firestorm several pages ago. Try not to spark another, dear.

Also that Alistair is Bi-racial because he has a darker skin tone than Calain and if he's Bi-racial then Fiona is a POC. And on that note question if Alistair was whitewashed in Inquisition.

No storm, don't worry. I was just honest to God perplexed by the existence of this dillemma and that David Gaider actually gave his input on it which could be summed as "Up to you."

Tumblr...

Well, of course Alistair is bi-racial.

His mom is an elf.

Good for them. Like the Italians, the Irish and the Russians, all people well known to any educated man of the 18th century not to be white, it is high time we properly characterised Fiona.

Really, they should be more concerned with Fiona contributing to elves being bred out of existence. There are too few to begin with.

On the off-chance that the whitewashing was actually legitimate...what then?

Given that the author of Fiona in DAI showed no other indication of having read the book, whitewashing her seems completely plausible.

Ok lol.

All I got out of that is she's just as likely to be POC as she is not. Thank you for that, though.

And in Thedosian terms, the only thing that makes Alistair biracial is that his mother is an elf. Skin color doesn't necessarily equate to a different race in Thedas, and I certainly don't recall any skin color based racism in the setting at all.

There is one instance, it's part of Cole and Vivienne's banter where Cole reads one moment where someone made a disparaging remark involving Vivienne's skin color, like "if you blew out a candle I'd wonder if she'd disappear."

Only if we can have Vivienne killed at some point.

I do love your consistent desire to kill the people you disagree with, while frequently seeking every justification you can for the plot immortality of those who agree with you.

Ok, that's one instance, to be fair. Hadn't heard that one before. Even still though, I have yet to hear any other such remarks. People in Thedas appear to have far more issues with your actual race or country of origin than skin color.

Tumblr is a scary place. That argument was so weak and yet the poster seemed to feel her "argument" proved her point incontrovertibly. Because if a white person gets white chalk on their hands, it would not be described as white chalk?

No, the point is well... not even a point. Because it's not about Fiona describing a contrast with herself - it's about her (i) remembering the skin colour of an enchanter; and (ii) a passage that.. well... I don't even understand, but apparently this passage:

She grabbed on to the nearest outcropping of the white structure, testing it to make sure it wasn’t going to collapse under her weight. It was surprisingly solid, and at the same time it felt vaguely coarse and slimy, as if its surface were made out of sandy sludge just short of dissolving entirely into goo. It left a pale, gritty residue on her fingers as well.

*shrug* Somebody has to be the devil's advocate. Tumblr and SJWs and accusations of whitewashing cannot be wrong every single time.

It's not a bad thing to raise questions and not just assume the status quo. It's more when someone crafts a poor argument and then pretends the weak argument proves their point. I'm not saying Fiona couldn't have been imagined as non-white in the books, but the rationale she provided was irrelevant, not convincing.

In this case, yes its probably unfounded, but I have also seen undeniably legitimate whitewashing claims and other "social justice" issues get shot down for the simple reason it involved social justice. And equally weak and insane arguments from the other side.

I try to keep an open mind and judge it individually instead of immediately jumping on the bandwagon.
