This game's controls are radically different from DA:O and DA2 and I'm having a lot of trouble, particularly during battles.

First of all, I'm using KB+M. Now, in the previous games, when I wanted to do a regular attack (I'm using a dual wield warrior), I paused the game, clicked on an enemy (no matter how far away it was), unpaused, and my warrior ran up to where the enemy was and attacked. Here, though, whenever I click on a distant enemy, my character just stands still and doesn't walk up to the enemy. So I have to waste time running to the place where the monster stands and then attack.

Something similar happens when I use, for example, the whirlwind ability. I pause, select whirlwind, click on an enemy that's far away from me, unpause, and my warrior just performs whirlwind on the spot where he stands instead of running to the enemy and THEN doing whirlwind.

I'm sure I'm missing something fairly obvious, but I'd appreciate it if someone can throw me a bone. After playing the first two entries in the series and loving them, this one makes me feel like a noob, as if I had never played a Dragon Age game before.

Unfortunately in DAI that's how the game works. You do have to do a lot of things manually now. There is one thing I can suggest that may make the game easier and that is to unlock the grappling chain ability that way your warrior/rogue  will let out a hook system that either pulls you towards the enemy or them towards you. The rogue equivalent is called hook and tackle I think. Once you've played the game a while you will get used to it but it took me a while to get used to it as well. You still will have to run around a little bit I'm afraid while the ability cools down but it should make it simpler. Also try to make use of the Challenge/War Cry abilities to taunt them they'll be moer inclined to come for you then as well. Thereby eliminating the need to chase them. It builds guard on you but also encourages the enemy to attack you more so you'll need to be ready for that. You'll still need to press the button to do the basic attacks though. But these tricks and abilities do make it a little bit easier once you've figured out how best to use them

There is limited tracking for melee abilities and autoattack, but only within a limited range.  You want a target to be at least marked with target designation diamond (whatever you want to call it), it doesn't necessarily need to be the hard lock with the enemy name displayed at the top of the HUD (although that helps a few abilities).

Still, the tracking for some things isn't the greatest, especially when there are mild elevation changes between player and target.  Melee combat really doesn't translate as well to a game played with KBM or controller really, at least not nearly as well as shooters do.

I concur with capn, ur good once u see the crosshair on a bad guy and pathing does suck so be mindful of elevation when they take off

Took me awhile to get used to it as well. You don't need to be right on them, just make sure your crosshair is golden and not grey.

I also hate that I have to be standing on top of a plant to pick it...it can be frustrating.

I thought this was going to be about how the default key binding isn't WASD and E for interact. ;)

You'll get use to it. Bioware biased combat to be twitch/action-oriented. You can play the entire game without ever using Pause or Tactical. Consequently, Pause/Tactical aren't as functional as they used to be.

It helps to think of yourself as playing Skyrim rather than one of the previous games. Though DAI doesn't really ask for much, twitch-wise.

Yeah I struggled at first too but you do get used to it over timeI did struggle a bit in Haven but I was kind of used to it by the time  I got to Skyhold though. I struggled a little against the dragons at first too but again once I got used to the skills and abilities and learnt how to get the most out of them it did eventually come together. That's why I suggested using abilities like Challenge and the grappling hook as those abilities certainly help me given I too struggle a little bit in moving around a lot because of only having 1 hand on the controls. I think thats also one of the main reasons why I also mostly prefer playing mages on this game seeing as you can manage and attack at distance without having to worry about it as with them you can just click on your enemy and keep firing

Thank you everyone for your contributions, they were very helpful. I'm still getting used to the mechanics, but I'm starting to get a handle on it and enjoy the game. Definitely not at the same level of DA:O, but the visuals are outstanding and the gameplay is fun.

True, but given how Bioware seems to chase trends, DA4 is going to replace Tactical with Strong Attack, Quick Attack, Roll and Block. ;)

This is just me, but I found mapping auto-attack to the X key and target switching to V helpful.

Just came back to this thread to say that it REALLY feels like I'm playing Skyrim, with only light DA:O elements thrown in. Even though I miss some of the earlier games' intricacies, I still find this game to be highly addictive (25+ hours in and I'm not even done with the 'In Hushed Whispers' quest yet), and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.
