The two actually interesting bits of that article are the alleged confirmation of Ryder as the protagonist name, and this screenshot:

Wow.  That's a beautiful picture.  I can not wait to do some exploring in the Mako.  I miss ME.

Hopefully they can do both. I don't mind vast expanses if they are semi optional.

I would love to be able to setup some outposts, for recovery of materials, and other purposes. I think they mentioned this as a possibility but it also did sound like they were putting in some serious limitations to it, at the same time.

                                                                                       <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>

The game will be an aRPG and NOT a space simulation. Though, the "leaked" Plot Theme implies some 4X type simulation. Mining, Military  and Intelligence Outposts are probably just optional choices. Still, if placing these outposts in "hot spots" that give the colony high returns, be it resources or enemy intelligence information, even some military outposts that thwarts pirate attacks, then maybe exploration is a "must do activity"

Nevertheless, if the implementation of the above is as crude and elementary as in DA:I's War Table crap, I want none of it.

World size is one of the things you can brag about quantifiably. Story is harder because it's subjective. Plus, the more you say about story, the greater the risk of giving away story points.

You can brag about story, choice, graphics generally instead without giving away plots points. It's definitely become a thing to boast about sheer size.

Remember that the Milky Way has had the Reapers killing off intelligent space faring cultures for millions of years. And that only a very tiny proportion of the milky way had been explored - exploration mostly stuck to the relay network, and even that was curtailed following the Rachni wars.

Though if Andromeda lacks Reapers or the equivalent, then there'll be the question of why the Andromedan civilisations don't utterly outclass us tech-wise.

Probably the same reason the Remnant race disappeared or the surviving races are just late bloomers.

I'm pretty sure that's an old screenie from last year's E3.

Staggering size is great unless you have 2000 fetch quests to cover it. I'm a mmo player and i don't mind them as much as others but my god such quests could crush game pacing like nothing else. (and don't tell me "you can follow the main quest line and you should be fine" thats not how games from bioware work). Not to mention fetch quests are  just boring.

I just wish they'd brag about story not world size. This cult of open world is starting to annoy me.

I think with both ME2 and 3 story's being leaked that they're keeping everything like it's a state secret.  #secretip

Great, so even if I do get the game I'll end up ignoring most of it.

But is it a real confirmation or just the writer assuming too much? Although the idea the new protagonist is named in honour of Sally Ride* would mirror Shepard's case.

*(I was going to point out that "the first female astronaut" was Valentina Tereshkova, then remembered that the Russian word is "cosmonaut". Still don't know if the writer was aware of the different terminology or it was ignorance saved by a lucky shot).

I guess that's possible, you can't trust too much in news of this kind. I'd have preferred Tereshkova :(

Ryder's news isn't really a news, it's a speculation.

I really hope this time they'll do a better job in filling their open world game.

Just FYI for those who are interested. I didn't know this before:

From Wikipedia: Blue-Ray

"Conventional (pre-BD-XL) Blu-ray Discs contain 25 GB per layer, with dual layer discs (50 GB) being the industry standard for feature-length video discs. Triple-layer discs (100 GB) and quadruple-layers (128 GB) are available for BD-XL re-writer drives.

The main application of Blu-ray is as a medium for video material such as feature films and physical distribution of video games for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Standard resolution DVD discs have been limited to a maximum resolution of 480i (NTSC, 720×480 pixels) or 576i (PAL, 720×576 pixels).

High-definition video may be stored on Blu-ray discs with up to 1080p resolution (1920×1080 pixels), at up to 60 (59.94) fields or 60 frames per second.[citation needed]"

Edit:  I really hope the standard/optimized screen resolution for Andromeda's graphics will be this.

An aside note: The Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD), described in the ECMA-377 standard, has been in development by The Holography System Development (HSD) Forum using a green writing/reading laser (532 nm) and a red positioning/addressing laser (650 nm). It is to offer MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), HEVC (H.265), and VC-1 encoding, supporting a maximum storage capacity of 6TB. No systems corresponding to the Ecma International HVD standard have been released.

Who knows? Maybe Andromeda will need 2 BDs for distribution and game installation. We live in interesting technology times.

Imagine what would be necessary if 4K video was included for pre-rendered scenes and on-the-fly graphics. I shudder and weap at what's become of us.

oh my god it was a goddamn joke

because they said the size of andromeda is "staggering" but they still have to put it on a disc, which physically is quite small

do you get it now, bsn

Why is everyone losing their minds over the assumption that open world element automatically comes at the cost of narrative, hub areas, and extensive cosmetic features like character development, NPCs, and hat options when really they should be expecting mind shattering revelations such as ME:A takes place thousand years after the ME3 destroy ending and yet the main character is none other than the original Shepard who some how appears out of left field with no memory of anything beyond the first encounter with the Prothean beacon.

Because DAI.

Played Mass Effect Andromeda yesterday and then today our new IP. Both of which are looking stunning. Today I wore a plain t-shirt.

Looking stunning but no story as everyone has quit in the last few months?

P.S. it's a question from CelticFrost - he nailed it.

Looks like Inquisition.

MEA is becoming the first ME game to which I'm actually looking forward.

I thought we had an entire thread on the forum that wound up contesting that claim?

Okay, they said stunning.  That must mean Andromeda is actually incredibly banal.

Oh my god it was a ... joke because they said the size of Andromeda is "staggering", but they still have to put it on a disc, which physically is quite small

At any rate, I looked up the data size of my ME-3 application folder in the C: Progran Files (x86) > Origin Games folder. Including all ME-3 DLCs and packs, it is 20 GB in size.

True, I gathered all this through downloading, and not off a Blue-Ray installation disk, but I have backed up this folder, along with ME-2 (20 GB) and ME-1 (11 GB) on 3 BR discs in addition to an external back up drive. I have invested a lot of money into the Trilogy, so backing all of it up is a serious concern for me. And this is just for ME-Trilogy.

The space requirements for having several other games on a HDD is growing.

I fully expect ME:A to push the installation file sizes higher. No joke.

Amen to that. I hope there also won't be any pointless and shallow mini filler side missions, like in DAI. Those are boring and not fun to do.

Sadly though, that's probably exactly what we'll get.  BioWare stated DA:I was a "testing bed" for the way their future games would go.  I have a feeling ME:A will be just like DA:I in the open-world/side-quest area...and sadly, probably, dialogue

After DA:I my eyes glaze over whenever Bioware touts the size of Andromeda as a feature.

Size is only a positive if there are meaningful things to do in that space.  If it's just huge zones where we do nothing but pick Flowers of Life and kill the occasional Invid, then I will be disappointed.

This.

I was thinking New Mexico myself, but yah.  The southwest portion of the US.  This post isn't designed to disparage anyone at BioWare, as I dunno what the Mako handles like.  But I live in GA.  I've never been to the southwestern US.  I still know what it looks like.  Miles and miles and miles of that.  And then add a couple'a more miles.

EDIT :  All I can think of when I look at that is, "I'm thirsty, are you thirsty?  I'm thirsty."

Isn't this what cheat systems are for? Gather all your resources in 5 minutes, then play the real game.

Yeah but if you do this for DA:I, you'll find there really isn't much side content to do in the zones that isn't gathering resources. It's a shame because the zones all looked great, but there was very little to do in them.

My hope is that if they're going with the big open zones again in ME:A that they actually fill them with interesting content.
