I saw a lot of Arabian/Persian/Middle Eastern influence in Tevinter, with the empasis on magic lamps and elaborate carpets. So ... yeah, darker, psudo-Arabic "casting" works for me.
So they're swarthying the Tevinters?

Yes, but they use different accent - received pronunciation in case of Tevinter. The "Queen's English". Its sounds more regal or official, which I'm pretty sure is supposed to underline Tevinter's.... snobbishness, I guess
Plus, you know, it's an empire and Great Britain was once a pretty big empire itself....
Pretty big empire? We were the biggest Empire there ever was. ![]()

Does anyone else find it curious that both the peoples of Ferelden and Tevinter have British accents? Ferelden I understand, with it being based, largely, on England, but I always wondered why the people of Tevinter sound largely identical.
'Spose you could blame it on the Dwarves?
The common tongue spoken in modern Thedas was originally the Dwarven trading language. Both the Tevinters and the Alamarri were some of the first to become trade partners with the dwarves, meaning that the language likely took root in Tevinter and Ferelden before anywhere else in Thedas.
The difference in accents are kind of appropriate for their respective societies, the Vints are cultured snobs who held a massive empire, while the Fereldans were warring tribes until only a couple centuries ago and often considered uncouth barbarians by everyone else.
I doubt that's what the devs intended, but it actually does serve as a rather lore-friendly explanation for why the people of Tevinter and Ferelden sound so much more "British" than everyone else, despite being half the world away from each other.

I like to think that the Qunari have American accents because they're trying to emulate the dwarves, who invented Common. It's canon that Qunari strive for accuracy when it comes to foreign languages.
I've said before elsewhere that my theory/headcanon for Bodahn being the only dwarf with a pseudo-British accent, is that it's a fake accent he adopted to make himself sound more upper-class to noble clients, back when he was a junk merchant antiques dealer in Orzammar.
Speaking of accents, does anyone else picture German or Norwegian for the Anderfels?

I don't doubt it.

Definitely. I thought they were supposed to be roughly analogous to Germany. I hope we get to see a greater variety of accents as we move north.

No they weren't.
According to David Gaider, Isabela always had dark skin. Gaider says the promo art of her being pale is a marketing error. In Origins, she is actually dark skinned, but the lighting of the game makes her pale. You can check this by putting her model into the model program and seeing it without the game's lighting.

Tevinters were never mentioned to be one skin tone or one race for that matter. People just assume they have to be all white because ???
They were conquerors who formed an empire that spanned much of Thedas at some point. It follows that they would be racially diverse as a result.

Forget skin pigmentation the only real important topic is the missing Wizard Hats!
Bioware, what aren't you telling us about the missing sweet sweet Wiz Biz hats?
It's obvious the southern Divine was trying to create the Inquisition to find the missing Wizard Hats! That's why Corybits and Souless blew her up!

To be fair, if it were the other way around, people on Tumblr would be throwing a fit and claiming whitewashing. XD

These actions are not morally equivalent in the context of a biased media environment. In other words:

^ The person got a bit carried away at the end, but I loved the visual aids.
That's the problem with such things... you're going along and getting a valuable and important lesson, and then someone calls you a "spoiled and entitled brat." People don't respond well to that crap and it is why Tumblr has its deserved reputation.
I say that as someone who not only has a Tumblr, but agreed wholeheartedly with the person's post. I don't care if people are tired of treating majority folks with kid gloves because they're afraid of getting their fee-fees hurt. It's a fact of life that people do not respond well to criticism in such a manner, I don't care what their level of privilege is.
We have a term called "constructive criticism" for a reason. The post was really great until the end where they pretty much undid all of their great work.

Fair enough. It was not my intention to imply that Robert, the OP, or anyone else was a spoiled brat. I think there is an interesting discussion to be had about this sort of metaphor and what parts are meant--or not meant--to be directly applicable to individuals, but I don't want to get sidetracked or fan the flames any further than I have already done.

Well I didn't mean you *hug*.
As I said, it was a good post and I thought really helpfully illustrated the point you were trying to make. Very often people make false equivalencies about these issues. You see the same with feminist things: "What about this female protagonist, or these female characters?" That's all well and good, but they are but a few in a sea of 74752789076925092 male protagonists, half of whom are tasked with saving or revenging girlfriends, wives, or daughters.
And of course, at the end of the day it comes down to the fact that it is Bioware's game, and their universe, and if they want to do a retcon to make Ferelden populated by brown people that is their prerogative. But of course that's not what is happening with Tevinter; there has been no retcon, and there can be no recton because we haven't actually BEEN to the place to see its people for ourselves, and neither have they ever said that the entirety of the country is light-skinned.
