Like so many of you I was not satisfied with the ending to ME3. Not only was it a bad ending on its own but it more or less ruined the franchise. With ME and ME2 you got a definitive ending, the same wether you played as a renegade or a paragon. With ME3 you got 4 (control, destroy, synthesis and refuse) wich makes it REALLY hard for Bioware to move the franchise forward. Wich ending is canon? Do people live in a destroyed galaxy or do they live "happy" like some kind of man/machine hybrid? It's more or less impossible for Bioware to keep the franchise in the Milky Way unless they want to flat out declare one of the endings as canon and build it from there. Hence: Move the franchise to Andromeda.
This is a mistake. ME needs to stay in the Milky Way. The galaxy is just as an imprtant character in the game as Sheperd, Liara and Tali. Imagine if they made a Star Wars movie but decided to move the entire plot away from this particular galaxy far, far away and instead have it take place in a completely new galaxy with a new backstory and new characters. It just wouldn't be Star Wars. Same with Mass Effect. That we won't be able to go to places like Palaven, Tuchanka and the Citadel in this new ME just feels... wrong.
To me the only option is this: Retcon the ending of ME3. I think a lot of players/buyers would understand if Bioware explained that they had to do this in order for the franchise to stay alive. Better to change the ending than to not have any new ME games. Maybe Andromeda will be a great game but to me it won't be a ME-game. ME belongs in the Milky Way.

Well you can't speak for everyone. The ending weren't even that bad especially with the ex cut. I like the whole idea of a new galaxy. I want to go back to the milky way as much as the next guy but with the endings, Who know how that's gonna work. The milky way has finally achieved peace. I don't like the idea of Canon endings but if people want to return to the milky way. Destroy may be the only option. If Shepard survived couldn't he have told people about the synthetic threat. I still don't like the ending only because the geth and EDI die. That sucks! Who knows right? In control shepard is reaper overlord and the races can't be challenged and in synthesis the galaxy finally achieved Peace. I don't mind synthesis because it makes sense that for species to evolve further, technology is the next step of evolution. Even in real life we ARE partly synthetic ourselves. Without technology we'd be neantherthals. Control. Who wouldn't want to protect the galaxy as reaper overlord? Think about it. Sure the endings weren't what any of us expected nor wanted but we gotta adapt and live with it. We shouldn't let it be an anchor. If you let em ruin your love of a masterpiece of a game series, you're a fool. New galaxy, new ideas. It's time to move on. Thats just the way it is. If you're done with ME it's no loss to us or bioware but to yourself. It proves you really don't care about Mass Effect.

Yeah... Like you make 3 awesome movies about Indiana Jones set during WW2 and then you make a 4th set in the 50's but it still feels like it's connected to the original trilogy somehow? I kid.

I just mean they created this awesome galaxy with Asari, turians, Elcor, Krogans, the Citadel, Omega etc and now they are going to throw all that away.

And to Heimdall:

Considering you mentioned the Indiana Jones franchise, I would have used this gif to answer the duel challenge:

indiana-jones.gif

And to be fair, of the things you listed only the locations are being thrown away. For all we know, all the species from the Milky Way will be coming to Andromeda.

They literally can't stay in the Milky Way without pissing off the entire fanbase.

At least, if not the entire fanbase, a good part of it. Thing is, this will happen no matter what Bio does next with Mass Effect. Setting the next game in Andromeda is just the beginning of what I'm sure will be a long list of complaints.

I'd very much disagree with most points of the OP's post. I think it is perfectly possible to have a good Mass Effect game outside of the Milky Way.

I  don't think most people would be ok with them turning round and retconning ME3.

Also isn't it several years too late for this post, the horse has bolted, the game will be set in Andromeda.

Exactly, it wouldn't matter how they did it, a whole bunch of people would be super pissed with them.

BioWare needed to wait for the angry mob to go to sleep, quietly walk away, then leg it in the opposite direction and get the hell out of there.

Returning to them and poking them all with a stick?  Nope, run away, run away!

The next game will feature Krogans and Salarians, AFAIK. Possibly other races, yet unannounced.

It's actually really hilarious.

I really don't get the reluctance. With a new galaxy we get that sense of discovery and awe that was missing from 3. And since they have a modern game engine at their disposal, they can create planets and cities without previous limitations. They have no places to stay away from ("this is supposed to be the Citadel/Illium?! It didn't look like that, retcon!"), or characters they'd have to spend so much time on to recreate in the new style ("Garrus didn't look like that! BW how dare you!").

They don't have to keep track of details that were thought of over 12 years ago anymore. It's a fresh start with brand new locations, and brand new alien species. They couldn't have given ME a better future than this "soft reboot."

The alternatives are very bad: choose a canon ending - not something BW does, unlike Bethesda; tell a story that takes place during Shep's run (not that exciting, limited), or just reboot everything and ignore the previous games ever happened, which also is a bad choice.

I agree maybe they will come back to the MW in a future game. But I think it will need to be properly thought out plan if they do. This could take a while which is also why I think it's best they take the series in a new direction in the meantime so at least ME as a series can live on. Think of it asa Mass Effect The next Generation type game with it's own seperate story to tell. As Bioware  stlil need to keep making money and still need to nkeep producing games. Maybe after this series or maybe even during it we will come back. Until it's written or not I prefer to kee pan open mind after al it's little things like this that make for great sci fi stories

On the contrary Milkyways are overrated anyways. I personally prefer Mars bars.

Mass Effect belongs where Bioware wants. You pointed out all the problems about the game staying in the Milky Way. Stop hating the concept before you even played the damn game.

Milky Way isn't what made Mass Effect. The characters, narrative and moments are what made Mass Effect this beautiful franchise that we know today. Give it a chance  ;)

Problem with that is.. the location is what gave all the characters and races their meaning.

What is a krogan without Tchunka, or an Asari without the Republics? The backstory and lore is what gives a place a sense of setting and history, and enriches the fictional Universe. For me it prpobabaly helps that i played all 3 games at once, so layer was built upon layer.

Anyway, the boat has sailed unfortunately. It will be interesting to see the Not!Citdael, Not!Omega and Not!Illium.

He's saying that your opinion is awful.  Nobody buys Mass Effect to play MP.  Get over it.

I admit it.  I'm guilty.  I am seriously hurt and sad inside.  I feel like part of my life has been stolen from me.  I won't try to hide it anymore.  I don't even know what I'm going to do with the rest of my day.  It will take me months to get over this.  A thread getting locked on Bioware's video game forum was the last straw for me.

Still. SP is all drama.  Just put something out and focus on the MP Bioware.

They tried to copy Alastair Reynolds.  They failed.

Their only recourse is to set ME4 in a galaxy far, far away in a distant future.

Get on board or get stomped.

Seriously, what is the point in posting this? It has been confirmed for some time that the game will be in Andromeda. This will not change, especially at this late point in development. There is nothing to discuss here.
