So 2016 is officially the year of the remasters. CoD, Dishonored, Skyrim, BioShock. And aside from one of those, they are being super chill about it. What's going on

But it goes without saying, if you haven't played BioShock, now is the time to pick it up. It's a brilliant series.

With Skyrim, the freebie is understandable for PC players, since they rely on PC players to make mods. To me, that is just good sense on the part of Bethesda.

But the Bioshock freebie? That is just a straight-up gift, and totally unexpected (to me, anyway).

Speaking of Bioshock, I'm playing Infinite at the moment. I usually spend a really long time walking around in the prologue before the s*** hits the fan and the game actually starts. I was quite surprised when two separate male NPCs came onto Booker. One guy said it looked like he (Booker) was into "sport," and that he (the guy) preferred the Greco-Roman style. The other guy, the bulk of whose statement I can't recall, concluded with "if you know what I mean." Other than having not observed that in the past, my main surprise comes from the fact that these guys seemed pretty daring for 1912, particularly with the atmosphere of Columbia itself. Although perhaps the celebratory nature of Founders' Day contributed to it.

One lady (that I observed) made an appreciative comment about Booker to her friend she is chatting with, but not to Booker himself.

In all three cases, Booker does not have any dialogue response, as he does with some other miscellaneous NPC greetings.

Incidentally, the conflict with Booker's in-game appearance and his box art appearance has always annoyed me. I REALLY like the VA though; he's so easy to listen to. I certainly wouldn't mind hearing him in Dragon Age. He does the Scoundrel in Diablo III as well, so he can do a variety!

Bethesda really owes the modders a lot - they're practically fixing every game they release.

Bioshock is not that unexpected, when you think about the studio situation - the remaster is being done by a tiny studio (that helped a little with Infinite), while Irrational downsized to a couple of people after Infinite, and aside from Ken Levine, there's not much left. It probably didn't cost 2K much to do this, and they're generating good press.

I somehow totally missed this. Good thing I'll have an excuse in September to play through the series again.

Troy Baker seems to be everywhere lately  my favourite character he voiced is coincidentally my avatar now, even though I've only seen some videos of the Last of Us. If you'll get to ME3, you might also recognise him there  ;)

^ Be sure to just walk up to everyone. My original goal was to hear a lot of the gossip about the goings on in Columbia.

I thought their mini tutorials using the fair games were brilliant.

Dumb Witcher 3 question, for anyone who knows:

I'm at level twelve, and in the character screen, the third row of abilities are all locked and marked "6." I initially thought that meant they would be unlocked when I reached level 6...Which is obviously not the case. Is there some parameters that need to be met before I unlock that row, or will it just unlock naturally at a certain level?

edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. It was as obvious as I thought it would be.

For you FO4 players (especially if you've also played Skyrim), here is an interesting piece about the "size" of the world. Thoughts? Agree/disagree with the author? I haven't played FO4 or any of the Fallout games, but I thought the comparisons to the previous installments were interesting.

Some of the comments were interesting as well, especially in comparing it with Skyrim and its fantasy landscapes where they can go with whatever they want, rather than the Fallout series that is set in real-world locations.

Fallout 4 exploration content is what kept me from completing the story.

Well I don't disagree, but size of the game didn't bother me that much nor non-unique environments. Personally I had much more problems with DAI's open worldness than FO4's.

I do agree on dull repetitive quest though, there is nothing fun in visiting same places with same respawning enemies multiple times and that game felt smaller than Skyrim. I have pretty much exhausted FO4 now, done all quest, been everywhere at least once, but then I have played the game hundreds of hours so ^^;

I can't really speak for the other Fallout games, since I've yet to play them. I don't really see the article's point about some interior locations looking too same-y. Isn't that a Bethesda staple? On Skyrim or Oblivion, I know pretty much what to expect when I enter a place labelled 'dwemer ruin' vs 'nordic ruin'. There are usually just small variations in the style of places within that type. I like it when there's a mini-storyline and quest within each place though. I don't think Fallout 4 had as much of that.

I definitely agree about visiting places too often though. Especially when the game automatically gives you three of these repeating quests at a time. I got absolutely sick of seeing the Federal Ration Stockpile by the end.

Ugh, Saugus Ironworks. I was sent on 6 missions there, so I'm tired of that place.

Bethesda is very good at environmental storytelling. But they can create interesting places not connected to any mission, and then direct you in the main missions to very dull locations. And you end up going to the same place over and over again (like Saugus, or the Abernathy farm).

While DAI didn't sprinkle content throughout the maps well, I got a lot less of that "this is the same" feeling, because of the variety in world design and mood. The Fallow Mire, Emerald Graves, and Emprise du Lion are wildly different regions, and this alone breaks the monotony. Fallout games do not have this to fall back on. Metro stations, settlements, house interiors - they just all look the same. Skyrim had the same problem with caves, and dwellings.

I agree with the article that the building mode in Fallout 4 exposed how reused everything is. They may not want more unique assets, but they really need them. The kit sounds great, because it let's them create environments faster, but when he presented, for example, the corridor kit, and said you can just add a pile of dirt and be done with it, I immediately thought 'I've seen it so many times.' If you design the whole world with a limited set of pre-made models (plus a little bit of custom ones), you're going to tire out players way faster.

Having a greater number of interesting and unique locations is more important than a gigantic map.

I think it wouldn't have been as bad had they not turned Preston into a non-stop radiant quest generator.  I ended up just avoiding him because every time I'd talk to him, I'd end up with another quest in another one of the same settlements that I was just at.  It reinforced how similar the environments were and really reduced the uniqueness of some areas.

I played the game for 20 hours before I realized that I needed to slot my skills for them to take effect.

Finally around to using some mods for FO4 (though had to uninstall the one I liked the most so far due to the game constantly crashing) and just bought 'Bully Scholarship Edition' today. Had an urge to play that one for a while now and since it was on sale and I paid my rent for the next month as well as this one figured it wouldn't be too bad to get it. Controls slightly worse than I remember, and I"m going off on a ramble again.

Welp, that answers the question about whether or not Lena Heady actually cut her hair for this season.

Do any of you guys/gals own a Nintendo 3Ds? I'm thinking of getting one as I was doing a clean out and found all my old Nintendo Ds games and since my adapter for that handheld isn't working anymore I might as well upgrade. Plus all this talk of Pokemon Go has reminded me that the last Pokemon game I've played was Pokemon Black/White, played pretty much most of the handheld ones down through the years since I was a youngin'. I still have them, well, not my Pokemon Red/Blue on the old grey brick or the ones I had for Gameboy Colour, gave them away to my cousin years and years ago.

I might however opt to get a Nintendo 2Ds instead cos I'd imagine the 3D will probably cos bad eyestrain after a long session. If anyone here owns one does it make your eyes bleed after a few hours or is it alright really? I'm not a big fan of 3D at the best of times so is it worth getting?

edit: You can turnoff the 3D, herp a derp I feel dumb now, nevermind.

Heh I wouldn't be surprised if most people ended up turning it off eventually. 3D is a gimmick and will always be a gimmick. The same applies to VR. Until they come up with an actual working Holodeck (from Star trek), people will continue to try the shiny new thing and then discard it after a while.

3D and VR aren't gimmicks, they have a lot of issues and applying them to light entertainment might be fighting a losing battle, but there are serious applications for the field which work very well.

^ I'm not talking about things like using them in training scenarios, or with physical rehabilitation, or anything like that, but of having them be part of the every-day entertainment for the general public.

@CrimsonN7

If the price is not a problem, you should consider the 3DS, since the 2DS is based on the old models of the 3DS. Nintendo, going for maximum confusion as usual, released the *new* 3DS, with some updated guts. The list of exclusives is pretty short right now, and the upcoming Pokemon Moon/Sun will work on the old 3DS/2DS, but the new versions will probably last you longer, you can play SNES games on it, and some non-exclusive games will run better. They've also added head tracking, so you don't have to sit dead centre to get 3D to work.

Alright, looks like I'll be investing in a new 3Ds console, a used one though. :P

I'm starting a new ME1 playthrough at the moment. Saul Shepard, ruthless colonist adept. It's a combination I've never really considered before. I'm headcanoning that his experiences on Mindoir informed his treatment of Torfan. He's very prejudiced against Batarians, but he's otherwise dedicated to being coldly professional.

I think I might enjoy this. Every other time I tried playing Renegade it just made me cringe with how out of place the character's hostility seemed considering how nice the crew is to them, but this time I'm going to try to make the character merely distant toward the crew, and brutal toward enemies.

I'd really want to do some alternative playthroughs, but the CC is really dampening my plans. On my first run I made a character I thought was nice, started playing, realised how the game handles dark skinned characters (badly), and gave up on the whole customisation idea. Inquisition overdid skin shininess at times, but at least you never ended up with floating eyes in dark scenes.

I'll probably do a renegade femShep run before MEA comes out.

I haven't done pure renegade runs, I just find hard time liking character like that. Though none of my characters are pure paragons either. However I decided that my last two characters would be opposites, other paragon in speech, but renegade in actions and other renegade in speech and paragon in actions.

Basically Spades Shepard is polite and pleasant, he's great talker and knows how to get people in his side. But he's also pragmatic and isn't afraid to make tough choices, for example sabotaging genocide cure. He can be pretty selfish as well, looking for options best for him without caring about others that much.

in other hand Dice Shepard is hotheaded and straight-forward even point of rudeness. She often insults people without second though. Despite being rude, she is pretty heroic and doesn't mind sacrificing herself to save others.
