I just got Mordin to join my crew but i couldn't help notice the last conversation before you leave for the Normandy. I got 7 paragon points but I also got 5 renegade points from that conversation, even though I was picking options for paragon. can anyone explain?

Same goes if you go regenade, you also get paragon points for some reason...

I think some of the major quests give both Paragon and Regenade points automatically. Probably so that you still have conversation options later on.

Or it could simply be because of some of the earlier choices in the mission and they don't give points until later on.

When you are talking with one of your members or end of a mission, on the left side are finding out more information usually. ((Meaning it does not continue the dialog)) If you pick the bottom or top of the left questions your going to get paragon or renegade. So just make sure you never pick the bottom or top of them and you wont. I've been testing it out and it seems thats how its working for me. Also on a different topic. Its kind of cool to play through the game with picking the dialog with ? after it. It makes the game feel that is how it should be driven, not all the time you will see a ? like when you need to pick a Paragon or Renegade, but its cool.

i recently went back to the particular dialogue in my topic, and i know the pattern you're talking about. same pattern from ME1 pretty much. but the end professor's dialogue actually has none of that in the left column and there are obvious paragon/renegade choices on the right column. i think it's as one of the poster's have already mentioned, it's to be that way to at least open some renegade options if you go paragon all the way and vice versa
