krjn09 (kirjain? or a Viera name?), oh I've always thought that proverb also applies because Finns tend jealous of anyone having more happiness/success than you yourself (be it genuine happiness, money, newer car than the neighbour, bigger house etc.). Boasting is frowned upon.

'Finland män not shou emousshiööns.' Except when drinking, and then denies everything the next day.

But I don't drink anymore, and I seriously hate karaoke. I thought it would just fade away after the 90s. I even avoided one pizza place nearby to avoid accidentally hearing karaoke. Even moved out of an apartment building to avoid neighbours in elevators. ;)

Grunt Kittenhand, you're a brave, brave soul - even I can't watch most Aki Kaurismäki's films. Too depressing and oddball.

Kel onni on, se onnen kätkeköön - he who has happiness should hide it. I think that just means we like humbleness and modesty. Complaining about work and your life in general kinda goes with that too. So not unhappy, just maybe a bit more private or introvert. Getting drunk gives freedom to truly express ourselves - and sing our hearts out. :D I don't really know, I don't really drink or sing, and I shock strangers by saying hello in the elevator. A poor Finn.

Ah, think I misread what you wrote about the proverb. Oh well. There's another.

mmm...There was also another saying ... on work and laughing too much, will wait till Tiina comes to her office, later today...

Ha, never thought of kirjan. Should start saying that when people ask. Actually it's a character from a game.

And yes, jealousy might very well be behind all that. Just tried to put a positive spin on it (really bad at being Finnish). :D And I feel awkward if I don't say hello and make some stupid comment about the weather or some such. My partner is Swedish, maybe that's rubbing off on me. lol

Heh, good guess on the name, but nope. ;) And I've been racking my brain for a fitting saying, but can't think of any. Maybe it originates in the eastern parts?  *ponders*

Only came up with this: Mikä laulaen tulee, se viheltäen menee = What comes too easily, you also lose too easily (i.e. if you get something without hard work, you'll also lose it in no time. [Lit. 'what you get just singing, you'll lose whistling'.] Refers to the fact that singing or any light work was/is considered too-easy work compared to actual hard labour).

krjn09, ah yes, so my husband's guess was correct, a name from Final Fantasy. (I edited the question a bit too late, you were fast)

LOL, must be the Swedishness rubbing off. Be careful not to start hugging everyone, as well. Or they'll switch to using the stairs.

Ugh, hugs. I'm going with the Doctor on that one "Never trust a hug. It's just a way to hide your face."

Though I've had some awkward situations with that, everyone else hugging and me just waving bye. I okay being hugged, just not very good at initiating a hug. :D Luckily their family have Finnish roots so they're pretty understanding. About the hugging... and talking.

There are so many posts I want to reply to, but I'll just get all messed up multiquoting out of sequence, so I'll keep it simple.

I'M MOVING TO FINLAND!!!!!!

I had a hospital appointment yesterday which meant going to a different part than usual, and I ended up in a lift, or elevator. Not only where there other people there, chatting 'normally', but all four sides were mirrored. What kind of sadistic f*ck designs stuff like that?!

I hate the preconception that all Irish people are friendly 'top o the morning' types. In person I'm not, unless you're a touring biker, in which case you're closer than family. I've spent my entire life wanting to be invisible - which isn't easy when you're 6'2". My French Moroccan partner and I met in a bar in Derry 10 years ago and she thought I was a Dutch tourist. Turns out she's a hugger too, and has actually insisted that I hug my parents on their birthdays.  :o

She's also the one with the acute non-Hollywood taste - we share a love of Jim Jarmusch films (with Night on Earth an obvious high), so it's not too much of a stretch to work out how I ended up watching Aki, starting with his French language films. While it may have little or no insight into Finnish life other than through the personality of the director, Le Havre is very good, even if I can't pronounce it properly (Le Harvre in an Irish accent, rather than Le-Avr).

And hey krjn, I guess your man can at least help you assemble your furniture, right?  ;)

I'm pretty sure you'll fit in just fine, Grunt. Especially if you can "grunt" instead of actually reply, that would be even better, they'll never know you don't speak Finnish. And if by some quirk they find out you speak English, you probably still wont need to speak Finnish, since most seem to atleast understand English (though most lack the confidence to speak it, or make it sound hilarious due to the COMPLETELY different letter sounds in Finnish). Since I basically just look like a "normal" metalhead, I'm pretty much just assumed to be Finnish, and people start gibbering at me. I know just enough Finnish to get myself out of trouble.... mostly because I know just enough to REALLY get myself into trouble.

That said, there really isn't any talking here unless they know you (or they have to for some official reason, in which case, the pain of having to "small talk" is usually very clearly displayed on their face). Which brings me to the point: Finns don't small talk, if they bother to speak, it is because they have something to say. Also, due to national culture, Weather isn't a small-talk thing, it is a serious and important discussion, don't belittle it by not taking it seriously, again, if they bothered to speak, they mean it.

Umh...What do you mean guess. That name is constant I'll tell you - she even kept her surname, not to hurt her career in the industry - sits 2 offices further , married to a German guy - and always have interesting ideas on how the northeners sees the warm personalities of the german people (in comparison). I think she'll experience a sugar rush overload when visiting Brazil...

Oh yeah, my truest Swedish experience so far was driving a Volvo to Ikea and spending the night assembling furniture. Good times. Guess the only down side is having to move to Sweden. But having spent time a bit all over, seems like a good enough place to live. :)

And I know that feeling Arkhne. I look like a Finn, which means I look like a Swede, which means nobody speaks English to me. Well, at least I get to practice. I like older ladies the best, they're very warm and nice and think my Swedish is adorable (written all over their face).

I would probably panic if a Finn tried to greet me in an elevator, my grasp of the language is not great, I have difficulty producing some of the sounds, I like their closedness, it suits my inability to communicate.

Sounds like I need to move there, considering my distaste for about 90% of the US population. I get anxious and easily aggravated in almost all social settings outside of family and close friends. Too many idiots think there are trophies awarded to who can be the loudest and most obnoxious person in public nowadays. I was called a curmudgeon at age 25, and almost 10 years later I'm much worse.

And yeah, do ask about that saying, otherwise it will bug me.

Yay, we'll get GruntK and Al Swearengen to move over here! Not as neighbours though, because, you know, neighbours are the worst and any neighbour lives too close.

Damn, did I say 'yay'? What I meant, of course, is: *grunt and grumble in a relatively non-threatening but perhaps ever-so agreeable tone*. Now get off my lawn.

Be careful of what you wish for - if northeners get their sugar rush in germany, and germans suffer cabin fever in lapland, you'll certainly suffer some hospitable withdrawal symptom. Maybe you have to slowly work your way up from turkey , italy, germany denmark, sweden finland and finally norway. Think only greenland silence is left after that. See it as a accoustic de-compression chamber from where you are now

I should have just simply said "Anywhere I don't have to deal with people I don't want to have to deal with." Which I know I shall always have to be around people, but not as much as I have to be now. But with 2 young daughters and doing all the fatherly duties, I am around stupidity way more than I want to be. Unfortunately, Idiocracy was made as a comedy a decade or so ago, but it has become a documentary/prophesy in US society.

Interesting finnish discussion indeed, seems theres quite the number of finnish playing the game : i have few on my FL list and no other scandinavian i can think off.

Any idea why ?

(Met a really nice finnish guy and and an irish guy living in finland at a conference last year, and we spent a really good time together. The FInnish was even the center of attention most of the time)

I quite liked aki kaurismaki s movies i have seen (maybe i only saw the havre, not sure anymore :)) and Paasilinna s books i read (maybe i read only one, not sure :))

I have social anxieties and stresses, which, being a(n Australian) man, makes me irritated and grump, which leads to angry. I don't like being angry. Which of course, reboots the whole cycle.

That was a comedy?! I could've sworn it was a documentary about a prophecy. I feel let down now, thanks jmac :(

So, I've been following the Finn discussion on and off the last few pages, and I'd have many things to add but so little time that I'll go just with one:

So there are actually people in the world who *don't* like hugging? WTF? What the hell's wrong with you people!? Hugging is one of the greatest pleasures in life :D And Grunt, even if I'm not a biker (yet, probably) I still expect to be greeted cheerly if we ever meet! And I'll hug you my friend, whether you like it or not!* :P

* I'm actually kidding. I don't like to force others to do something they're not comfortable with. But still, you should learn how awesome it is! :P Also, I might substitute the hug with a headbutt. Just for you <3

Yes! Do it! :D

Haha okay, cool. But you'll have to bear with me as i have so little time for gaming nowadays. If it looks like I'm trying to avoid playing with you, it's most likely just cause I'm not playing at all XD Were we friends on Origin already? Otherwise shoot me a request ;)

Oh, also: prepare for the rust ™ XD
