So here is what is happening....

I was walking by the cave where this quest is supposed to start. I had Solas in my party so he said something about sensing something. Helped the girl outside the cave fight a demon and then entered. Fought some more demons and killed them. Found the rune thing on the wall with the veil fire. But I have one problem. No ancient artifact showing up. The quest won't complete. It still says "Use the artifact" and the diamond is still on my map.

Since then, I have found 2 other artifacts in different places and was able to activate them. But the one in the first cave near the crossroads still never appeared and quest hasn't updated.

Does anyone have any info or solution for this? 

I've read that there are 10 (11 total) artifacts for this quest. Will it update when I find the other 10?

Never heard of that glitch before. It is supposed to be right up against the far wall (away from the entry), at the foot of the idol. It looks like this:
 


If you don't see it there, do a game repair or reinstall. That has sometimes fixed similar problems for me.

Did you talk to the woman again after killing the demons? After doing so, she says something about activating the artifact and then she'll say she found something and plans on keeping it for herself. Ask her what she found, then you'll get a few options on what to do from there. After that, the quest should complete.

No. I actually went back to the crossroads to empty out some stuff as my inventory was full. When I went back, she was gone. But I read that you didn't really need her and that if you ignore her, you only lose out on the amulet.

I ended up just starting over from the beginning again now that I understand everything so much better. And I did this part correctly this time.
