Scanning Planets: Next-Gen Tedium

Imagine cleaning gold balls with cotton swabs, that is about the best comparison I can make to what scanning planets entails. Let's not forget that you only get a limited number of cotton swabs to use when cleaning each dimple and you cannot use a single swab more than once. When you run out of your current cotton swab supply you have to drive to the nearest store and buy more, but never more than a small amount. Also, your vehicle has the worst gas mileage ever so you need to refill it every trip as well.
The best part is that there are much, much better ways to clean golf balls so why is there not a better way to scan a planet? I know, because it is simply a time sink and adds absolutely nothing to the gameplay. In fact, I would go so far to say that it detracts from the overall experience.
Great game Bioware but please stop with these obvious time sinks. If you want us to spend more time exploring star systems then include more of them, don't make me scan every single inch of the planet and then need to refill 2-3 times per system.

next game, incorporate the same system but write about the planets geological features as the scans are received. Would make more fun :/

Personally, i find it addicting, i sweep through the galaxy like a plague, leaving every single planet I visit stripped of all resources.

Im not a huge fan of the scanning either, i actually prefer the mindless mako driving.
NO!!!!!!!!!! DONT SPEAK THAT HORRIBLE NAME!!!!!!!!
But seriously, I just remember there was one really really rocky planet in particular that was nothing but HUGE mountains (even thought every planet was nothing but huge mountains). I was trying to drive up a 75 degree mountain and I just realized that Id have to do that on every other play through after that one. I only made it through 3 play throughs because of that Mako.
Having said all that, the scanning is almost as bad. But the Mako is still worse.

Imagine my delight when Bioware finally came up with a product that catered for my two favourite pastimes in one delicious package.

These mini-games were kind of fun and spiced up the game a bit on my first run. Its only on my second playthrough that I feel like banging my head against a wall whenever I do them.

Yeah - just hit the big nodes on the rich planets - it doesn't take long to build up a stockpile.

The Mako version sucked, but at least it wasn't instant carpel tunnel, so yeah, I'd rather the Mako too, although I have to admit the mechanics of ME2's scanning IS neat. Just far, far, far too repetitive.
I don't think I'm anywhere near finishing the game, so if this isn't in game already, I request... Hmm, pretty much demand, there should be another scanner upgrade that is easily aquirable, when you have it, you just press a button and all mineral points on the planet are highlighted, or something about as easy as that.
I still don't know yet if I'll need these massive amounts of minerals I'm mining... If I do... well, I won't be doing a second playthrough either.

They could have given each planet an elemental composition and allowed you to deply probes that would mine the planet while you explored and would acquire said elements when you came back to pick them up. They could have allowed you to then upgrade these probes with capacity or production and allow you to purchase more of them within reason. Heck, they could even let you hire freelance spacers to do the work for you and they take a % of the return.
They could have even allowed you to scan the entire planet with a single pass. Once this pass was completed it would then highlight the actual areas where you need to probe. Sure you still have to do the work but at least you are not simply wasting time scanning everywhere.
As for the probe/fuel issues well, I hate these as much as I do the new ammo counts. I wish there was a way to retrofit my weapons with heat sinks and provide me with unlimited ammo again. In a game where everything has been streamlined these things feel like steps backwards instead of an evolution. Hopefully Bioware can fix them for ME3.

This is even worse on the PC, where you must sweep your mouse back and forth across your mouse pad a bazillion times. My wrist feels like it's broken.

Use a high DPI gaming mouse, makes it much easier. Small movements produce better results. I set my mouse to 2000 DPI when scanning, makes it go much quicker.

It wouldn't be nearly as bad if the scanning wasn't so painfully slow, or if you could actually tell what areas of each planet you had scanned. As is, I do this creeping serpentine motion north to south across each planet. My will to live slowly drains away as I gather resources.
if you talk to miranda you can upgrade the scanner making it less of a suckfest.

Seriously, scanning is the most massive drag. I want to upgrade my weapons, but it hurts. I'm not saying I won't play the game again, but I am thoroughly dreading all the scanning I'll have to do. And the upgraded scanner is hardly an upgrade. I'm hoping so badly that we get some DLC with a scanner that sweeps faster or covers a wider swath of land. Either would dramatically help.

This is why I am probably not playing a second time through.
I second that. Don't understand why they decided they needed to ditch the planet exploration (mako), but keep the single worst aspect about it. And then on top make it an even more important part of the game.

I've been using between 50-60 probes on average per planet.
Wuh? How is that even possible?
Even taking the richest planet down to depleted only took me around 15 probes...if that!
I think you may need to change your technique a little...ignore the tiny deposits and just take the significant ones - it is usually enough to get everything.

Agreed. Here are my 3 suggestions:
1. The Scanner leaves a red "paint" (I can't think of a better term right now, just woke up) wherever you scan, so you know where you've been. (Or at least a color that contrasts with the planet's surface color)
2. Another upgrade to DRASTICALLY increase the speed of the scanner.
3. An upgrade to triple the scan diameter (to cover more ground).
Either that or a Hemispheric scanner that scans one half the planet and shoots probes like buckshot at all the resources
