It will most likely never happen as completely irl as people often suppose, and I'd rather it didn't happen completely in ME.

ME isn't set far enough into the future for this to work.
But that's stupid. Evolution doesn't work that way. As long as humans live in varied conditions, geographically and climatically, there will be racial differences. Where do you think the racial differences came from?
Also, I expect cosmetic customization to advance faster than genetic homogenization.
He specifically cites genetic diversity, so does Harbinger. Which is pretty stupid, considering humans are one of the most genetically homogenous populations on the planet due to a genetic bottleneck that damn near wiped us out.
And a quick google search would have told the writers this.
Wouldn't colonization of space also interfere with this?
The population of Mars for example would be largely segregated from the population of Earth, and the vastness of space would prevent interbreeding with each other on a large scale. I would imagine that given enough time and the right environmental pressures, that might result in differences cropping up between the two populations.

QFT
Thank you!
I agree. Although certain traits could be expected to predominate in a general sense, and the population itself could be expected to become overall less diverse.Genetic homogenization will most likely never happen as completely IRL as people often suppose, and I'd rather it didn't happen completely in ME.
No thanks.
One of the main problems with this idea is BioWare and a sizable chunk of their audience are VERY passionate about representation. Representation of various sexualities, gender identities and yes, races. So this would obviously go against that, and we'd have innumerable complaints about it i'd imagine, because "muh representation."
You can't even have a game set in medieval Bohemia and not have people complain that there aren't enough non-white people in it, good luck trying to make a futuristic title with only one race.
This is the silliest thing I've ever heard.....

People are really complaining about Kingdom Come which is set in 1403 Bohemia only having white people? That would be like if I complained that a game set in the Kingdom of Zimbabwe in 1403 had only black people or a game in 1403 Japan had only Asians.

But that's stupid. Evolution doesn't work that way. As long as humans live in varied conditions, geographically and climatically, there will be racial differences. Where do you think the racial differences came from?
And with humanity expanding across the stars, you'll see even greater racial differences down the line, possibly even due to gravitational differences.
Isn't diversity of genes kinda important evolution-wise as well? Otherwise humans can't adapt in changing environments. And I think genepool becomes more similar when there smaller group of people having children together than all races having children together?
YOU RACIST BIGOTS. WE'RE ALL ONE SPECIES ... HUMANS, ASARI, SALARIANS, BUGS, LIZARDS AND VULTURES ETC. WE'RE TRULY ONE AND THE SAME.
everyone is unique. Take that away and what are we?So I was reading this article on the web, that talked about 10 potential evolutions mankind may go through in the future. In one particular part of this article the idea that all of humanity will eventually evolve to the point where race is indistinguishable was presented. ie everyone will have the same skin tone, and kind of hair, eye color. The obvious result of this would be the elimination of racial prejudice. A swell theory if nothing else, I figured since this is something of a prediction about the future, it would be great if other science fictional universes, those especially dealing with "The Future of Mankind." also embraced this idea and just removed the idea of racial characteristics from there games all together. Like with the article it removes a lot of "Why can't I be this, or have that?" or "The X people in this game always get Y, or aren't done right." complaints.
Here is the article in question, The Term they used was "Mono Ethnicity". Sounds good to me.

They're in 2180s.. you need at least several thousand to several million years to have significant change.
It is way more likely that racial divides will more likely expand into more varied differences since numerous human populations will spread out all over space and we'll end up with groups like the Helghast, Pilgrims, Furyans, and other uniquely adapted humans.
I believe they should do this.
SP is all drama. Just put something out and focus on the MP Bioware.
They should definitely have more mixed people.
I'm half Asian, half white. Do you remember any such people in Mass Effect?
Kai Leng. According to the novels he is of Chinese and Russian/Slavic descent.

Errrrr... what exactly are "racial characteristics"?
Can you be more specific?
I find it doubtful that we'll have a future like that if you extrapolate based on present-day realities and the amount of intolerance and divisiveness that you see on the news every day. In any case, if total racial homogenization actually happened, I would personally find the absence of different features just a bit boring.
I live in Hawaii where a lot of us are racially mixed (I'm half-Chinese, a quarter Hispanic, and a quarter Irish-Welsh, FYI), and sure, I like hot local guys (*points at Jason Momoa*), but blue eyes are exotic to me. I'd be rather disappointed if I couldn't get my blue-eyed Andrew Lincoln fix every Sunday when I watch The Walking Dead.

...the human race isn't even 1,000,000 years old. Differences like skin tones and such do not take millions of years to occur.
The genus Hom0 is several million years old even traits like standing upright took several more million years to evolve. Our nearest cousin Hom0 floriensis lasted around twenty thousand years ago. Living and growing up in low atmosphere and biotic abilities doesn't make you a different species, you're still Hom0 sapiens. It would take several more millennial for actual evolution to occur rather than just four or five generations of intermarriage of all the cultures in the world.
Variation in skin tones is still largely affected by the geographic you're in and which part in the world you're exposed to the sun or UV radiation. You're still going to get fair-tan-dark people even in any countries with very diverse population.
And how do I get this profanity filter off?
