I agree, that's why sarcastic is my favorite of the 3. Sarcastic Hawke is pretty ruthless, I think, because he/she is probably the most honest.

Serioulsy, one of the most ruthless SarcHawke moments is when she says "Oh must you be so dramatic", and proceed to slit someone's throat wide open. Damn girl. lol

Not sure about snarky Hawke being ruthless. Varric does tell this story about when some Carta thugs showed up at Hawke's door and then he invited them to play some cards instead of killing them.

Haha true...

I meant ruthless in the sense of being brutally honest, telling people what they don't want to hear, and being critical of almost every group...templars, mages, chantry, nobles, etc. Snarky Hawke can be kind of a jerk sometimes. But at the same time, he/she is probably the most non judgemental, and least easily offended... At least Isabella seems to think so.

Maybe the most ruthless thing my snarky Hawke does is blackmail Thrask.

Which is still funny, when you get the letter for Feynriel/Act of Mercy. "You asked me out here just to pay me in person?"

I'm finally playing DA2, and I find myself playing Hawke as I did the Inquisitor - I don't see the dialogue choices as 3 sets of personality types (though I understand there are personality mechanics at play here), but as dialogue choices to be selected according to what Hawke might have wanted to say in each situation. So in my mind, my Hawke has her own personality, which is often diplomatic, will use humour where appropriate (humour seems to deflect tension really well in DA2), and will occasionally be direct when necessary.

yeah this is  how most of my Hawkes turn out too. Diplomatic with a sarcastic funny edge to try to lighten the mood. I like the bits like when they say " I'd like to go at least one week without meeting an insane mage just 1 week." I'm not against mages by any stretch of the imagination if anything mages aer my favouriet class as I've frequently said, it's just the way that Hawke delivers that line just makes me smile. This is just before the battle with Huon one of the escaped mages from the circle in Act 3 which Meredith sends you after.

I've never done that - I'm way to nice in DA to ever fall for such a thing...

I don't know if Hawke is ruthless so much as just sort of confused, chaotic, and sort of amoral.

The two are commonly conflated, it seems to me.

Anyway, yes, they hinder role play.

Why would s/he any of them? O.o  Ok, maybe confused, especially at the end of the game.

With the Warden and the Inquisitor, you pretty much have to create and develop your character's personality from scratch.

But DA2 has it limited to three, simple sets, and the only work left to do is to choose when is it appropriate to be nice, funny or blunt.

Personally, not really.  But I don't limit myself to playing a single type.  My Hawke was probably more purple than anything, but I didn't always pick the purple response (and now I cheat, and use the console to get the tone responses I want).

I find the neutrality of the Inquisitor forced and bland to the point of distraction.  Even when there's a tone icon, there's often very little change in line delivery so it feels very one-note.

It's easier with a Warden, since I have a 'head voice', having a silent protagonist when everyone else is voiced kind of weirds me out.

This is like asking if rerouting the river has screwed up my watermill.

In short? Yes, quite.

The game not existing at all would hinder my roleplay.

My opinion: Varric tells the story of Hawke, s/he is therefore inherently a little bit polarized, cartoon-like character. Therefore, for me was quite enough what the game has given with the diplomatic, sarcastic and agressive. (Of course, it would be nice to have more options in some situations: for example if your Hawke is blood mage... Sorry that I can never leave without a word, this is annoy me.)

(But: "Opinions are like testicles. You kick them hard enough, doesn't matter how many you got.")
