The original one. I get that it was deployed as a measure to undercut the Krogan fertility and their ability to replenish the army, but it would have had the same effect without disclosing that it was artificially created, or who deployed it. As a result of this information being public, Krogan hate the Turians and the Salarians, and go out of their way to harm individual members of these races given the chance to do so. I would think it would've been prudent to keep Krogan in dark on the subject of origins of genophage, so as to not cause unnecessary animosity in already bitter Krogan. Given how pragmatic Turian and Salarian governments are I would hazard a guess that they would do exactly that.

So my question is, who was the bleeding-heart pinko that blew the whistle on the whole thing?

Maybe a group of scientist salarians running around Tuchanka a little while before all their babies started dying would've tipped off the Krogan?   I know they're not the sharpest species in the box but even they could've worked that out surely.

But I get you, perhaps a more natural slow down in their reproductive cycle could've been explained away as a natural process and they could've kept quiet about the whole thing.

It's not so hard to imagine that a Salarian Scientist or Turian Official was captured on Tuchanka and interrogated and revealed the information under stress, is it?

Maybe some Salarians felt bad and spoke out. Like Mordin. What, you didn't think all Salarians were conscienceless jerks, did you?

My guess is that they didn't want to keep it a secret. At the time the turians deployed it, the krogan rebellions were at its peak. The other races were fighting the krogan for a long time and the turians could barely hold them at bay. While the genophage would have diminished krogan numbers in the long run, the current krogan army would not have been affected directly.

Disclosing this information would on the one side have upped moral of the council defenders and on the other side dissuaded the krogan from fighting as they realized that they wouldn't be able to sustain their species if they kept the war going. If you want to end the fighting quickly, there are benefits to telling the enemy that you just kicked them in the quad (quite literally).

Indeed. There were two parts to the genophage. The first part was to suppress krogan fertility to a viable, sustainable level for long-term coexistence.

The second part was to break the morale of the krogan and get them to realize keeping on with the horde tactics would just get them extinct. Thus, they very likely announced that it had been accomplished and made it known.

It was never something that was meant to be kept secret.

Yeah, what good is a weapon on this scale being deployed without it being known publicly 'we have done this to you'? Like, the whole point was to prevent the krogan from overwhelming the Citadel races. If they thought they were dying from some random act of nature, they could easily have made one last push in an 'if I'm going down, I'm taking you with me' effort. But if they know it's a weapon used on them, they also recognize 'they could have killed us and didn't, we've lost this one, at least we have a chance this way.'

It would be pretty obvious that it was artificially created, and it would be pretty obvious who had the motive and technology to do it and the ability to deploy it. They could deny it all they wanted, but it would be laughable as a lie.

Here's what I mean - consider the HIV virus. It was not artificially created, and it is quite easy to prove this. Not only can the genetic ancestry with SIV be traced and mapped, but a large number of mammalian species have similar immunodeficiency retroviruses. They are ubiquitous in nature. Thus, HIV quite obviously jumped the (relatively minor) species barrier.

But an artificially created virus - it would come out of the blue. There would be no similarity with natural viruses, and it would be extraordinarily efficient. That doesn't just happen. Once the genophage was identified as a virus, it would be very easy to deduce that it was artificially created, and very easy to deduce who the likely culprits were (*cough* Salarians *cough*). So they could lie, but the whole galaxy would know it was a lie.

That of course would be assuming that anyone who was in support of the Genophage was a conscienceless jerk. The Genophage was a mercy, a slap on the wrist compared to what the galaxy did to the last species that tried to invade them.

But as to the OP, I would imagine that the original deployment of the virus was declared pretty openly, there would be nothing to gain from trying to keep the Genophage a secret. Very much like the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan, what point would there be in the US trying to deny their involvement?

Technically, the genophage was mild compared to what could have been done to Tuchanka and Garvug. At the time they gave Garvug to them as a reward for the Rachni wars and due to the lack of predators the Krogan flourished and quickly overpopulated the world... unlike the harsh world of Tuchanka.

What doesn't make sense is that since most of the troop replacements were probably not coming from Tuchanka, but rather from Garvug, the genophage was released out of the shroud on Tuchanka. They would have had to do an airborne release on Garvug as well which was never mentioned in lore.

It could have been worse for the Krogan, though. Imagine if the combined Asari and Turian fleets showed up and pulverized Garvug from orbit with good old fashioned dirty nukes. Cheap, destructive, with lasting effects.

80 CE : The salarians make first contact with and uplift the primitive krogan, manipulating them into acting as soldiers for the Citadel Council.

300 CE : Council reward the krogan a new homeworld. Free of the harsh environment of Tuchanka, the krogan population explodes.

300 - 700 CE : The krogan begin to expand exponentially, colonizing many new worlds. Growing concerns about their expansion lead to the founding of the Special Tactics and Reconnaissance branch of the Citadel.

710 CE : Realizing that the krogan will never give in as long as they can replenish their fighters, the turians unleash a salarian-engineered bio-weapon known as the genophage on the krogan. The krogan population starts its decline.

800 CE : The Krogan Rebellions end.

2185 CE : Mass Effect 3

-------

The krogan might not be aware of the genophage immediately after the initial infection. It might take a much longer time for them to realize the council unleashed a bioweapon on them but things like more females having more stillbirths than they used to on Tuchanka should raise a lot of alarms
