I have a hard copy of DA:I's original version; planning on getting the GotY Edition tomorrow through Digital Download. If I make a character/save on the original copy, would I get to keep playing that on the upgraded Edition and still get the benefits?
Upgrading to GotY?

The saved files should be in the same location, and as such, shared between your original copy and the GotY.
(Actually, Cloud should be shared as well. For some reason, I have over 400 hours logged on ME3 demo, just because I logged that much with the full game.)

I think so too, a friend of mine got the GOTY edition and it sounds like she's got all the same stuff that I do. My copy is a physical disc ( standard edition) + all DLC.

If you're on PC, I would suggest physically backing up your saves occasionally, just in case. Just go into
C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save and copy the files to some other folder. I'm still playing with a save I made on November 30, 2014 because I like that Inquisitor so much.
To your question, you should be able to continue your save just fine. The next time you load up the game with the GotY content, you will have new shipments in your Haven or Skyhold box. BUT, I would suggest starting from the earliest point possible because Trespasser brings new war table rewards that you may have already bypassed.
Every new character should have a hard save on the bridge with Cassandra, just in case you ever need to go back, far back, but want to keep your same Inquisitor.

Keep the face, you mean?
If this is to me, then yes I'm referring to keeping the same face. However, it's also about the Keep import state. If for some reason the DA Keep explodes and is no longer available, I'll still be able to play that same save with my imported world state.
