Parsing a possible future version of Mass Effect
It's amusing that Marketing's Doctrine is to pack as many adverbs as possible into a short sentence as can be managed. It leads to nonsense like "a galaxy of planets", "planet-dense but seamless open-world galaxy, rich with discovery".
From the Survey Item List:
1. -Immersion. --Bio wants to know if this is important to players. Future VR games?
2. -Cinematic quality. --No question that in 2020-22 the graphics will be superior to today's. Implies more mocap and avoids FemShep famous open legs posture?
3. -Right amount of challenge. --Hm.. this is really subjective and not quantifiable.
4. -Gameplay keep my attention. --Is the studio concerned about this aspect based on recent published games?
5. -Deep system for char. growth. --Bio's strength. They want to see if romance is still in demand? More team member interactions? Loyalty quests to flesh out each character? Leveling up the chars' skills and attributes? gear upgrades?
6. -Variety of activities. Guess what? --Quests and missions and sonar pings?. Internal game(s)? To be expected.
6. -Explorer. --The studio wants to pursue this venue or extract player interest?
7. -Easy for non-ME players. Pursuant to EA policy. Dumbing down the game even further? Better menu navigation? Refers to combat mechanics? No gear upgrades, default armour and picking up weapons from the battlefield as in Halo?
8. -Feel like a hero. Hm... Does Bio's metrics suggest that a Hero is better than a Villain?
9. -Right amount of combat. Subjective. However, it does suggest that story telling and combat balance is important
10. -Space to explore. Hm.. again with the exploration theme... Does the plot premise point to exploration as key to winning or easy on the development pocket book?
The survey items suggest probable paths to future games. Bio is looking for game ideas and player interest. Major battles spanning across a "galaxy of planets" ( a very stupid way of describing war across the Helius cluster or even across neighbouring ones) send Reaper shivers down my spine. The description is quite interesting. It gives the writers lots of room to create many adventures and characters, as long as the Reapers+Star Brat plot is avoided and that the game finishes on a hopeful note. No item(s) that refer to player choices.
Also, does this mean that Bio has a small team currently working on the next ME game while Andromeda is getting the "finishing touches"?
