What's not to like? He's smart and powerful and doesn't look too bad either.
He'd be the wrong gender for me in RL, but if I were a woman but otherwise the same, I'd be drawn to the type like a moth to flame (as I envisioned my female elf Inqusitor to be). And isn't that an apt metaphor considering how things go in Trespasser...
Also, his romance is the only one directly connected to the story, and I consider him to be among the most interesting characters in DA. One other is Morrigan.

Solas represents something mystical, intriguing, powerful, and sexy to me. His romance was meaningful and bitter-sweet. It left me wanting more and intrigued - on top of heartbroken. The information he provides about the Fade and of ancient Elvhen, made me curious, especially since he was an elf, not of an alienage or a Dalish Clan. He was well written and balanced well in regards to right/wrong - bad/good - sad/happy - carefree/burdened...these are all attributes that make up interesting development, in game and in real life.
Besides...he has sexy lips and nice eyes.

He's a very interesting character and his romance is easily the most meaningful for the story (kinda like Bastila's was in KOTOR).
But you are talking about Solas including the DLC's right ? when you mention that his romance is the most meaningful for the story.

When you see him at the very end of Trespasser, a whole lot clicks together about his personality throughout the entire game. Deep deep stuff here.
Frankly, women find his tragedy and mystery very attractive. And he is so very tragic in many ways. The fact that he is good but has done, and may do more evil down the line is all built into his personal story and makes it incredibly bittersweet. Any who romanced him would most likely just magnify the emotional impact.
I can't wait to see how they resolve his conflict. I hope they do so with my Inq. it just won't have the same impact otherwise. Because after the whole game and all the character development (even without romancing him) it just would have the most emotional impact IMHO to have the Inq. resolve this issue with Solas personally.

It's nothing to do with the DLCs - he was popular in the base game before those came out. They just gave more insight into why he is who he is.
Anyway, for me - we agree on most subjects, he's very smooth, he's physically attractive, he's intelligent, he's willing to reason with you on subjects you disagree with rather than dismiss you, he's connected to the plot, he's complex and flawed as a character, etc.
Ignoring the whole "genocide the planet" thing - he's the perfect guy.

Solas was already one of my favorite characters before Trespasser and even before I knew who he was. To name a few reasons;
I liked the stories he told about the Fade and his journeys. I liked his humour and the discussions you could have with him. I liked his personality and I dug the murals he painted. I decided to romance him because his personality and interactions fitted so well with that and those of my Lavellan. Had Solas been some normal elven dude unrelated to Fen'Harel, I'd still have romanced him.
Basically, Trespasser expanded on the characterization of a character that I already loved.

DLCs? What? I liked the guy before all that. He became one of my favorite characters during that first play through of mine. He was actually the first companion for my first Inquisitor to become friends with (getting and completing companion quests). I thought it would have been more difficult than it was, but he kept chucking me approval. I find him to be an interesting character with flaws. He's intelligent and arrogant. I enjoyed talking to him about the Fade. I like his sarcasm, how he can be an ass and it's funny to me (because I'd be the same way in the same situation or say the same thing). His interactions with the other companions were fun. I loved how he and Vivienne were always needling each other. The romance is just an enjoyable side benefit. Also, dat voice. Smooth mother ******.

Bwahahaha... that's awesome.
I love bald... a LOT... and I don't think he's the least bit attractive.
"he's willing to reason with you" - no, he really isn't. Trust me... as someone who he did not like very much.. he was a bitter little bald rat.
Evidently women like to be lied to and manipulated by a megalomaniac from time to time.

OK?
Dunno what you did to him, but when my character disagreed with him, he gained approval when she argued her points. Was one of the initial reasons I liked him so much, usually a character just hates you if you disagree with them.
Nice job ignoring the guys who like Solas too with your little generalisation that "women like to be lied to". ![]()

It's fairly easy to get low approval with him if you recruit the templars instead of the mages, recruit the Wardens, play a character that's not a big fan of magic and the Fade, etc. My male (non-mage) Trevelyan has a really bad relationship with him. I don't see it as a bad thing, though. I find it cool to see a different side of him. (I'm only sorry for the lack of content I seem to be getting for that.) In that case, Solas is very honest about disliking the Inquisitor, it's very obvious it's the "You don't like me and I don't like you, but we must work together," kind of a relationship, but Solas is also polite about it as per usual. He's definitely less venomous than Vivienne if you antagonise her.
As for the rest, even though Solas is not my type of guy because he seems to be such a closed book and all the lies by omission, doom and destruction don't exactly help his case, I must agree. There's no need to make condescending BS generalisations just because somebody enjoys a well-written fantasy character. Not knowing about the deception, I can see why somebody would fall for his intellect, his attitude, his stories, his (or what seems like) kindness, etc. I can't blame some Lavellans for not seeing through him. And while I consider dwelling on a relationship with a guy that deceived them and has tried to destroy the world multiple times by now absolutely insane and something I'm incapable of understanding, I do get playing it for the drama and story and such. Or, hell, just because he's a fictional character and people can thus afford to fangirl over him because it's just harmless fun.

Medhia_Nox is so rabidly anti-Solas I sometimes wonder if they're role-playing for the forum or something.

In his romance, he is a bad guy gone soft. A fallen god, a rebel struggling against his own feelings. While I adore Cullen's sweet romance, it is the drama that drives us crazy.

Oh, it's all the mystique of the tragic love affair. He loves you! But he can't be with you! But he loves you! But he's plotting to destroy Thedas! BUT HE LOVES YOU!
While I understand it, I can only shake my head at the Solas fangirls who believe they can still save him. ![]()
