Hi All,

So I'm still rocking out the classics on my PS3 but my birthday is fast approaching so I've decided to gift myself a next gen console..

The question is which one? They both seem very similar but yet both have subtle differences?

If you have any experiences that could help me decide I would be grateful.  :D

I would say look at what games are available for them in terms of exclusives and such and pick which one interests you most. Because ultimately this is what I did in the end neither of them had backwards compatabilty when I got my XB1. I had been with PS since the PS1 days and seeing as PS4 wasn't backwards compatible and the fact that I was interested in playing the Halo games I chose the XB1.  Of course since then they've had some baqckwards compatibility added XB1 can now play some 360 games and more are being added all the time and PS4 is having PS2 games added to its library. If I had this info now that I had then I'd probably still would go with the XB1. But again that's more down to the games

I've read that the PS4 performs better with multi-platform games.. can anyone confirm this?

Definitely not a decision to make lightly. Check what multiple videogaming sources say, look up personal experiences and objective statistics about the consoles. A friend of mine has an X1 and I have a PS4 so these are my thoughts on the dilemma:

1. PS4's interface is, in my opinion, quite a lot better than X1's. More intuitive, more pleasurable to use, sleeker.

2. PS4 is a more "powerful" machine technically speaking. I'm not entirely sure what that means but there have been numerous independent tests done on the two to confirm that. There's not much in it, but PS4 has better visual fidelity and "smoothness of gameplay" (I study Medicine at university, not English)

3. On that note, In NON-EXCLUSIVES, PS4 runs better, sometimes at 1080p while the X1 is going at 720p. Is that important? can you tell the difference? Who knows, but there it is.

4. I prefer the PS4 controller, it's lighter and less of a burden on my dainty fingers, but that's just pedantic. The Triggers are very sensitive on PS4.

5. I've found that, in times of sale, the PS Store is better value than Xbox Live Marketplace and even, sometimes, the evil empire of Amazon itself.

As sjsharp says above, exclusive games can be key to which console you buy. Since I only play scum RPGs, which are released on both consoles, this isn't a problem for me, thank goodness. Also, to reiterate again the good points of sjsharp, X1 does have quite a good emulation-based, easy-to-use backwards compatibility service. But, a. you might already have the old console, b. it doesn't work on every game (their catalogue is expanding rapidly over time, and user-submission is being accepted currently!) c. Playstation Now is a £12.99 a month service (with free 7 day trial) that allows you to STREAM a broad catalogue of PS3 games on PS4, which isn't too bad of a deal considering the amount of play hours you could get out of that.

In conclusion, both are great pieces of tech that are less expensive now, and that's always good. If you have the knowledge, the money, and the time, though, a great Gaming PC is probably a better investment.

Yep.

Source 1

"It’s internally that the key differences emerge. Both are based on the same AMD Jaguar processor technology found in its Temash and Kabini APUs. Both have eight CPU cores, with the Xbox One running at 1.75Ghz to the PS4’s 1.6GHz. Both also have AMD GPUs, but here things differ. Where the Xbox One’s GPU, derived from the Bonaire architecture found in the Radeon HD 7790, has 12 GCN compute units to play with, the PS4’s GPU, based on Pitcairn, has 18. Even given that the Xbox One’s GPU runs at 853MHz to 800MHz, that gives the PS4 a tangible advantage on the graphics front.

To make things harder for Microsoft, the PS4 can call on 8GB of 5500Mhz GDDR5 RAM, giving it a lot more memory bandwidth than the 2133MHz DDR3 the Xbox One relies on. Microsoft compensates by using a 32MB ESRAM cache to keep data flowing smoothly, but the PS4 hardware is – when all is said and done – that bit more powerful."

One other factor to consider is that with MS's convergence of XB and Win10 programming, you may be able to port saves (and perhaps actual games) directly between the two platforms.  Won't be able to do that  with a PS4.

May not be an issue for DAI, but bet it will be a BIG one with DA-next.

Yeah with my disability I generally find the X box controller easier to use.  In fact have a Xbox style controller for my PS3 as well

But yeah I have seen the PS4 in action as my brother has one and I watched him playing on it over Chrristmas. I think both machines have good things going for them it was just a case of choosing based on what games interested me. Seeing as being on the PS I'd never played Halo befoer and there was no backwards compatabilty at the time the release of the Halo Master chief collection kind of ended up swinging it for me in XB1's favour whereas there wasn't really any games that got my attention for PS4 or at least none that I hadn't really played already on the earlier systems. But yeah I agree about PC as I do most of my gaming on PC I mostly use the consoles for the sports games and other games that don't generally make an appearance on PC.

That's the fan war that's been going on for a while... I've always been divided. I prefer the actual PS4 console, but the Xbox controller is so much more comfortable to hold in my opinion. But I'm a huge Gears of War and Halo fan and those are Xbox exclusives so... Sadly, if you want the best of both worlds you have to spend a lot. If it comes down to PS4 v Xbox for financial reasons, I'd say go with the one which games you prefer... If you care about graphics, I guess PS4? Have you seen Final Fantasy XV on PS4? Gorgeous! But if you've got a great PC - it's going to look even better... And graphics aren't everything. I'd rather play a game on low/medium graphics with a fantastic story than a crap game on the ultra settings.

I ended up getting both but to be honest, but I mostly use my PC... which I guess is kind of sad. But that's a bit of a long-term commitment if you're going to game on it. You will need to upgrade your parts every few years but it can be done.

I actually have DAI for PS4 but ended up buying it for PC anyway....

as many have said.. it all boils down to the games. i prefer most games on PC. but since i'm shoved down the throat on certain games that i want to play it must be on certain platforms, i'd say i go with the PS4.

I'm curious about this. What will be the difference for the next DA?

I have both an Xbox one and the ps4. I played one game on the Xbox but I've spent countless hours on the ps4. I just have had such a better time on it.

I would wait a few more months to buy. Word on the street is there's a .5edition coming out for both consoles after the "Division " debacle. Basically they downgraded all parts of the graphics to stay in line with what the consoles could handle. There have been tweets and some leaks on net if u look. From credible sources. Basically the consoles are gonna get gtx980 equivalent. Microsoft says they  coming out with a way u can jus stick the new gpu card in an old system but I'm not too sure it's possible I've never opened an xbone . Sony has said they're doing a ps4.5

I have both. But since I'm part of the Xbox "environment" or whatever you call it, I mostly stick with it. Besides PS4 exclusives.

You can't go wrong either way.

I hope it's not too late :D .

I don't have a Xbox One so I can't say much about it I have, however, a PS4 so I can suggest you a couple of things:

  1. Check the catalogue of games of each platform and decide which one suits better. Most of the popular games are available for both platforms but there are some that are exclusive for one of them, check those.
  2. If you already have a good PC then you should think about buying a PS4 since most of the Xbox games will be for Windows too.
  3. Both PS4 and XBox One need a subscription to play online but if you keep your PS3, then the playstation plus subscription will work in both PS3 and PS4 (and vita if you have one) so you'll only have to pay one subscription for both consoles and you will have like 24 free games per year.
  4. PS4 seems to be more powerful than XBox One and is capable of running some games at higher resolution. For example, if I recall correctly, PS4 runs DAI at 1080p resolution and Xbox One at 900p.
  5. PS4 will have VR, don't know about Xbox One.
  6. Xbox One has Kinect.

I already had a powerful PC and a PS3 so I decided to buy a PS4 for those reasons. And that's all I can say. Hope it helps.

I hate the Playstation controllers, but I hate the XBOX Live set up as well. Tough decision.
