Pretty much every single bad guy in DA:I did the following:

1.  I R OSSUM

2. U IS DOOMED

3.  RUN AWAY

4.  REPEAT UNTIL END FIGHT

5.  DEFY INQUISITOR AT JUDGMENT

Could we get a little less of the mustache-twirling Snidely Whiplash thing next time?  I mean, every single one!

Alexius?  Check.

Envy Demon? Check.

Corypheus? Check.

Samson? Check.

Erimond? Check.

Florianne? Check.

Nightmare? Check.

Qunari Matron? Check.

Imshael? Check.

Servius? Check.

Something more interesting than "U SUCK I RULE I DEFEATS U NOW WAIT OOPS"  It gets a little old, especially because we have nothing aside from their word to indicate how "ossum" they are.

Solas? :P

He and Loghain (kinda) have been interesting antagonists and not "mustache-twirling" ones. However I'd say DA needs to have more non-stereotypical villains, like ME2 TIM.

Isn't that basically every villain ever? They show up, taunt you, then run away to prepare for the final boss fight.

The one exception is when the villain is chasing the heroes, in which case they show up and YOU run away.

How do you suggest having the player character interact with these villains if a single encounter would mean the end of either?

Well there's also the case where the villain employs subordinates which you interact with throughout the game, with the ultimate game event being the eventual first and only encounter with said villain.

This can't really work though, because the player will only interact with the boss's subordinates. This brings you back to the main problem. Are you supposed to interact with them only once as well?

Come to think of it, isn't this very scenario what pissed off many people in ME3? The final mastermind behind it all being someone you encounter rather than fight like almost every other "subordinate" in the game. "Out of nowhere" is what people liked to use.

Bioware, just give us Kreia 2.0 for the next DA installment. Now THAT was a proper villain.

You can also have cases where the villain *actually accomplishes their objective* (never happened in DA:I even once).

You can do a lot more when the plot of the story isn't just "You vs. Bad Guy, 2 dudes enter, one dude leave".  When instead what you have is competing goals--you want to accomplish X, they want to accomplish Y.  So if they accomplish Y, it's not Game Over Dude, likewise if you accomplish X, you haven't won yet.  This allows a lot more room for failures, surprises, subversion of the apparent situation, etc.
