No, let's not talk about invasions. Let's talk about love and peace instead!

I want peace... by any means possible.

I'm hoping that'd be more the angle they are going for especially in terms of the aliens having diverse opinions on us.

I hope so too. It would be the more mature and contemporary take on massive population displacement in video games. Not to mention it opens the door to many moral choices. Do we negotiate with the Andromedan species to give us some place to settle? Do we push through blockades and force them to accept us, or outright invade? Do we enter shady deals with some other Andromedan species or criminal group to get what we want behind the back of the others? So many possibilities.

Edit: I'm probably hoping for too much, but it's okay, there will still be MP to compensate any disappointment

I'm hoping that neither complete peace or complete dominance over natives is possible.

They definitely shouldn't whitewash that we are the colonial invader in the scenario.

In the space between hopefully there will be room for the player smooth relations or antagonise relations to a degree.

[snip]  Will we be the invaders who try to co-exist, or will we go all "British Empire" and annihilate the natives?  What would you try to do?

The British Empire? Pfft. Nah, the cool option is to do like some of the Spanish "colonizers". Why waste resources and ammo when you can just get the natives to kill each other? Then you come in telling them that you will bring peace and order.

*sigh* Good thing that when we study that part of our history now we realize the moral problems with the approach.

This is why that I don't take BW seriously is because of crap like this. I don't want to invade and destroy but yo explore and have adventures in another galaxy not to conquer. I don't want to do that because it's wrong and it's evil.

You think the other species will just let us co-exist? I doubt it; proof is in the first contact war. These new species will see us moving in and they'll see a threat or potential prey for slave labor. Plus lets not forget we may not understand their languages due to our tech not being able to translate, so communication may be non-existing. This is just reality. If we came into Andromeda without conflict and just got along peacefully with the inhabitants; where would the story go. This would just be unbelievable and bland.

Bioware doesn't have as many balls as a Krogan to make a villainous invasion scenario as the main campaign where you are the bad guy. At most, you are pretty aggressive, and the hostile aliens are somehow evil and you may be freeing the natives from them.

Complete dominance over the natives sounds good. Time for sentimentality is over... this is fight for humanity's right to exist. The ultimate war for survival. One must be ready to do whatever it takes if they wish to win. I see no reason why the aliens would just welcome us with open arms. They would be very foolish to do so. I would like to see it start with a war where we conquer new planets and enslave some lesser native species... then maybe when we have some foothold in Andromeda we can start to negotiate. If the player wants to play a more diplomatic protagonist. I hope there is two different paths to take... so that everyone can be happy...

Yeah. We really need to candy coat stuff.
It has always been done for the majority. And simpletons actually prefers it. But it should "sound" like we're taking a straight stance. "Sound" like we don't like to beat around the bush.

Why? Not everybody wants to feel like outright invaders. It has to be turned around so that we can be good heros or bad heros. But we like to be called heroes and not villians with that flag stuff.
I like this protect the underdog bs and then stick a flag up his back when he begs & pleads with us to it:

For that to work we need another invading force from another galaxy than Andromeda. We just happen to sit in the right millinia in the right bar - when the crooks storms in and take dobby (house pet of some beautiful but primitive princess) hostage. That way we get to kill stuff without a conscience and have the princess ask us for a flag to protect her galaxy. We get to be general lafayette, waste their resources and offer them technology to protect themselves. There are good examples from history where this fooled the majority. Graciously move on to Multiplayer ...

That only works if the natives are portrayed at being at a much lower level of technological development. If there is anything close to parity, a handful of war refugees shouldn't be able to impose their will on anyone.

Going full Captain Cook as the protagonist would be a bad image and well over the line.

But what if I wanted to pretend to be a god, take advantage of the natives, tick them off by trying to take their king and then have them kill me. Ugh, some people ruin all the fun.

I hope the MW species are viewed as the enemies.  Would make things very interesting. But, we'll probably be peacekeepers.

Regardless of what people believe, the only way to advance is to explore. It's what people do. In a Universe full of billions or.more galaxies we have a thirst for.knowledge and adventure. Why delay the inevitable. Good that we are heading to Andromeda.

Sure we are.invading their galaxy but it's huge. Some will probably welcome us with open arms but other will opose. The MW races are civilized, not savages. There will be no conquering. Conquistadors and Europeans conquered the native people because they were savages. Scoundrel. If the citadel races weren't civilized they would have conquered each other years ago. We are only travelers in the new galaxy. Although other races won't see it that way hence conflict. None of the civilized societies of today like the US or UK conquer anymore. We have the UN to keep peace. I see our trip to Andromeda like the U.S. invasion of the middle East in a sense.

I will make the JSDF proud, as I explore the Special Zone for new lands and resources. My commander may be an Otaku, and these people strange and unknown. But with our will, we will make this first step our new base, and nothing will drive us out.

Oh wait, wrong thing. Sorry.

I can't wait for Mass Effect Gate: And So the System Alliance Fought There.

Gate is awesome but I only read the manga, never saw the anime. I don't think it would work all that well for Mass Effect though. ;)

Willing to bet a lot of money that getting our foot in the Andromedan community's door will involve:

  • Allying with one or more benevolent underdog races against a more malevolent and supremely powerful foe (Khet?).
    • This will mean that the player gets to fight for a 'righteous cause' (the underdog race might have been annihilated had we not shown up).

    • Despite the fact that we'll still be massacring an indigenous species (and potentially stealing their territory), Bioware will allay players' white/colonial guilt by having us save another, more sympathetic species from subjugation or extinction.

    • High probability of both the Humans (or Milky Wayers) are Warriors and Diplomats tropes coming into play.

    • Of course, the Khet's motivations might be more convoluted than they first appear.
      • Perhaps, like ME1's Geth, they're operating on orders from a higher, mysterious power that will become more prominent in future titles.

      • Bioware might even throw in a twist, such as the Khet having an ulterior (maybe even reasonable) motive for their aggression.

  • Exploring solar systems to find habitable planets for each participating Milky Way race (maybe even deciding whether to conquer or barter for claimed/occupied ones).
    OR
Protecting and expanding previously-established colonies from Khet retaliation.
    • The leak about a Krogan colony ship makes me think it'll be the former, although it might have referred to a ship that departed a Krogan colony.

    • The "Remnant" will have engineered some intragalactic fast-transit system analogous to the relays in the original trilogy.

    • There'll also be technological incentives, such as finding Remnant tech to help defeat the Khet (or whoever).

Could we not give them a "British invasion", where we send mop-haired musicians to win them over with great 60's music?

Yep that's the far more interesting and realistic set up in my eyes but as you say we'll probably end up as something like liberators.
