I don't think people are wrong to actually put weight on an Alpha - these builds can tell you a lot about design philosophy, etc. That's why they make these builds - to see where the game is at vs. deliverables, to be able to test out whether concepts work in execution etc.
The problem is that people treat builds like the final product, which is nonsense. Sometimes a vertical slice or alpha is meant for marketing consumption. Bioware got well-deserved grief for their DA:I Alpha Slice and they should have (but didn't!) get grief for their X06 vertical slice that had interrupts, controllable companions, and story spoilers like crazy.
