I love Pirate Steve in the movie Dodgeball. That alone is all the reason needed for a pirate DA game to happen.

That and Quizzy needs a pirate hook arm and Iron Bull already has an eye patch.

... and ship nugs

I really like this idea, OP, but it is hard to implement. Random raiding isn't really to everyone's tastes, nor is it easily turned into a good story premise within the constraints of what we're going to deal with, and so we'd need a legitimate enemy with presence on the sea. Who is that going to be? I wouldn't mind being a privateer aligned with Tevinter against the qunari, but such a forced allegiance would be rather annoying to many others. I can't see any way out of this except by choosing a background with a built-in allegiance at the start of the game, but that would raise other problems. Among other things, we're going to deal with Solas in the next game, how would that fit in?

I can't say it can't be done, but whoever designs such a story premise must take extreme care that it doesn't come across as contrived, or limits player freedom too much. So really, I'd absolutely love to play some kind of privateer on Thedas - I already have several character concepts that would work - but I don't think it will happen. Not in the next game, anyway.

I think the next game would focus heavily on The Qunari-Tevinter War at least for the first half of it at least with Solas plot coming more towards the end. Qunari Invasion has been hinted much longer then Solas plot. I also dont see us choosing between Tevinter and Qunari, while a option to end it peaceful may be possiblel I think no matter what we would be against the full force of the Qunari which should be a big enough enemy to carry the bulk of the game. Dreadnoughts are a important part of the Qunari forces as well as Seheron and Rivani being important locations so all these factors may come into play. Following or even possibly preceding the Qunari Invasion I can see a Tevinter reform Act coming into play especially since we would be considered Heroes of the Imperium I figure our opinion would count more. Which I could see Solas finally  launching his plan maybe starting a elf revolt especially with the Imperium in a even weaker state due to the Invasion which would of course bring us the aid of the Inquisitor and the rest goes how it goes. As long as the Qunari Invasion takes place in DA4 I can see this path being possible.

I think they'd be best-advised to make Qunari/Tevinter the main conflict of the next game and leave Solas for later, excepting a few intermediate skirmishes. Maybe we start by looking into unknown magic that could counter Solas in Tevinter's archives. But would they really make the qunari the canonical enemy, especially if it means supporting Tevinter? One can hope, but I find it hard to imagine.

Anyway, with the focus on Qunari/Tevinter a privateer background would become more feasible, though we'd need to talk to influential figures so we'd need to be on speaking terms with parts of the upper class. Perhaps we've discovered some important secret....yes, that could work.

DA4 is a long time coming, people are invested in Solas now and not 6-9 years in the future when DA5 is made. Why prolong that storyline so much?

As of now, the Qun is but a group of malicious grunts who want to stroke their egodicks by widening their influence in the world.

Solas though? He is the big thing.

Say DA4 did focus on the Qun. Everything you do to save the world would feel like make-believe when you know '' well you know, Solas is out there anyway, trying to destroy the world.. ''

Qun will be part of DA4, that much I can believe, but so is Solas, he has to be. Why go through all the trouble to create a setting, and tell the players what is to come, if you don't explore that in the next game? Seems like ridiculously bad storywriting to me.

All you need to do is connect the two conflicts. What if we'd need to get Tevinter on our side because they know most about ancient magic, but for that we'll have to resolve the war with the Qun in some way. There is no need to resolve a conflict as big as "Solas wants to destroy the world" within one game. In fact, we've already had a "destroy the world" plot in DAI, we don't need the culmination of yet another one in the next game.

The Raiders in DA aren't all bloodthirsty pirate who raid left and right .

The Armada even has a rich captain who got his gold through legitimate business , and he's on the sea because well he likes his boats.

Isabela was more a smuggler than a raider , Hawke was a smuggler too...and sure I wouldn't like smuggling slaves , but smuggling lyrium or other exotic goods wouldn't keep me from sleeping at night .

Besides we spend out time pillaging all the things already , we go places kill people take their stuff and then we sell it for that sweet gold.

Yeah....I recall Isabela saying adventuring is about killing people and taking their stuff . Not quite the same, though, since those usually attack us first.

What I can imagine is playing some kind of gentleman privateer who has a habit of double-crossing Tevinter slavers and qunari alike. Maybe we'd even get to do the ultimate heist: stealing the recipe for gaatlok. I've been waiting to get that opportunity ever since DA2 came out.

Why did you have to bring this up, OP? Now I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too , working for both during their war effort and then swimming in gold going "ah ah ah ah"...

Although my wish isn't motivated by power or profit , nope , it's all the pick a side narrative we've got through DA with mage/templars ...I don't care for picking sides. So this was frustrating for me.

Exactly we are Raiders in name only not because we are evil pirates. We dont even have to conform to the pirate lifestyle that to can be a option like how the Inquisitor can become a Jenny at the end. If it makes people feel better just say Armada lol. We already do everything a member of the Armada would do we just dont have a boat. If the Qunari-Vent War allows us to be neutral well this would be the best neutral group to join. Grey Wardens are still a mess right now and the Inquisition in either form is also in no position to get into this conflict while hunting Solas.

I love the gaatlok heist idea that would make the next dragon age games very interesting if we get that recipe. Even sell it to the highest bidder  B). Probably wont happen so I wont be disappointed I just expect the worse and hope for the best.

I wouldn't give it to just anyone exclusively, no matter the profit. I'd probably sell it to whoever pays most, then give it to everyone else for free.

Think of it this way: being able to pick a side prevents you from being stuck with a side you don't like. Being the leader of a faith-based organization in DAI didn't sit well with me.

Unsure when it happened, I've found myself hoping that DA4 will be slash and burn, total destruction, apocalypse, Ragnarok, scorched and salted earth mitherfriggers - a  world burning in chaos without The Veil, locust-like Qunari invasion, locust-like Exhalted March against the Qun, Imperial Chantry, or (fill in the heathen/heretic blank).

But pirates would be good too.   :)
