It's just that the whole anchor/herald of andraste thing sets the Inquisitor apart from the rest of the companions. I'm not saying a relationship can't work, they obviously can, it's just that I imagine it would be difficult to get close to someone, as a person, with everyone putting the IQ on a pedestal like that... At least at first. The Inquisitior has a lot of power and that can be isolating.
Anyway. I can see why Cole goes for Maryden. She's kinda aloof as a bard, but she understands people, and she helps/inspires through her songs. Some of the same reasons he likes Varric. They would make a good traveling team if Cole wants to help people and learn about them along the way. I doubt Cole cares much about age as a factor, he would put personality first, preferably somebody who helps people somehow.
I think it's more that he was in a vulnerable situation at the time, and could have been easily taken advantage of. I mean, he asks Solas to bind him. He's lucky Solas and the Inquistitor weren't like that.

Does age matter? It's the learning experience that counts.

Well, if you think about the romances in DA:I, a lot of them are going to have significant age-gaps depending on the age of your Inquisitor. For instance, my avatar picture. Rowan Trevelyan is like 23, and Cullen is 30.
Yeah.
It could be pretty creepy for Sera and Blackwall especially depending on the Inquisitor's age... Probably best not to think about it too much.

Why not a nice not-so-young woman? Why not a not-so-young woman who isn't experienced? Why not a guy? I mean, this is Cole we're talking about.
Because Cole is a young man.

Not only is that not true on multiple levels, but even if it were, how does it counter anything I said?

It isn't true that Cole is a young man?
I was only answering what you asked.
It's about compatibility. Cole is young, male, and straight. Only a young female should be able to romance him. Or if an older woman, it would be a cougar/cub kind of thing going on, which Weekes didn't want.

You're making a lot of assumptions there, on top of the previously stated errors. Don't superimpose your view on what "compatible" means onto Cole.
No, he's not a young man. He's a spirit, who has no gender, and whose age we don't know. The bigger issue is how accustomed to our world he is and how much he understands it.
So no, Cole is not young, not male, and we don't know his orientation. Therefore, we can't say that only a young female should be able to romance him.

I totally agree that Cole shouldn't be a romance option.
But why isn't the Inquisitor romancing some ancient elven god-thing considered creepy?

Mostly because he looks and acts like an adult man. Looks alone have the potential to reduce the 'creep-factor' because we, as humans, simply feel more comfortable with something that looks like a healthy age. Same goes with personality.
It's why dating people like Abelas or Solas will be ok, but dating people like Xenon the Antiquarian and very possibly Flemeth will be pushing the creep factor for most individuals. (Of course there are exceptions)
