They need to focus on level design, not story content.
No focus on story content? That's heresy... heresy I tell you! Actually, it's both, all of the above, top to bottom, in and out, it's every aspect of the game that has to deliver the goods.
My expectations aren't as demanding as yours for Andromeda. ME:A only has to be:
fun to play, with a stunning opening sequence, have a really nice and clever story, squadmates we can care about, nice conversations, interesting choices, breathtaking scenery, cool uniforms, a nice wardrobe for off-duty hours, a sexy little black dress for us girls, no P/R system, balanced mako driving physics, amazing light, reflection and shadow effects, thunder, rain and lightening effects, avant-garde architecture, a deep color palette, a superb character customization system, SP play that doesn't require one iota of MP play, a new starship with a classy name, new and interesting aliens, alternate paths to accomplish missions and goals, covert play options, poignant 'feeling moments', explosions, narrow escapes, better hair styles that are a little wispy in the breeze and head movements, romance, no sex at the end (just a passionate kiss and embrace (sex to happen in the next game: build the relationship's intensity!)), a few timed events, simpler Hack and Bypass mini-games (or NONE!), a gambling game, easy credits, lots of heavy weapon ammo, a nice way-finding system to prevent getting lost, a 'filled-in' expansive galaxy, and a cliffhanger ending with stories to-be-continued. But it doesn't have to blow me away or be a ME-3 killer in order for me to enjoy it. My expectations are really quite simple.
Oh... and really nice music, of course.
