There's probably an old thread about this but I'm too lazy to dig it out, let's have some fresh info.

 

I've been noticing a few players equipping the high-velocity barrel and the piercing mod at the same time.

I always thought it was pointless.

Last time a friend of mine played a GI with javelin and I noticed he equipped these weapons mods.

As he is a skilled player, it made me wonder if maybe I had missed something.

 

I asked him about it but is english is extremely approximative and I didn't understand what he meant, only something about more damage.

My question is : is this combination useful, and if so, how does it work ?

Using both increases the distance your shots can penetrate, and more importantly, increases your damage against armor.  Not sure if it is additive or multiplicative, but either way, it makes for faster boss killing.  Same goes for using AP/Drill ammo on top of the mods.

Keep in mind, if the gun doesn't have innate penetration, you loose damage equal to the penalty on the worst mod on penetration, iirc.

As I understand it, the penalties are reduced to zero if the weapon has innate piercing, like the Crusader or Widow. This means that stacking penetration on weapons with innate piercing is good, but stacking penetration with weapons that don't have innate piercing is bad, because when you penetrate, you end up doing less damage.

Javelin+HV Barrel+Piercing Mod+Drill Rounds III means you can pretty much snipe anywhere on Glacier from the LZ. Get hunter mode or geth scanner, and someone to drop a recon mine on the other size of the map.

 

Now that might not be the most practical thing, but yeah, increased penetration distance allows you do to some cool wall hacking. You don't need to be in the same room with the enemies. Hell, you don't need to be in the same zipcode.

- armor piercing stacks and muttiply armor weakening effect, but it s mostly irrelevant as we are talking portions of 50 armor points damage)

- cover penetration distances stack (additively)

- penalty for cover penetration is more tricky:

• IIRC, if u have 2 piercing mods only and no inhate  u get the best deal of the 2.
• If u have AP/drill rounds only, no penalty
• except if u equip a penetration mod or 2 on non inhate piercing weapons, then back to point 1. Thats why u mostly should nt take penetration mod and ap rounds
• except on inhate piercing gun, with which piercing is free anyway, and stacking might be fun as sterling told

Pretty much as the people above said.

 

Javelin has an innate penetration distance of 1m so you can extend it to 3.7m with both HVB and Piercing Mod, without receiving damage penalty.

 

With this high penetrating power you are not only able to do wall hack shot, but also some double hit trick on boss units like Atlases, Scions, Praetorians, Banshees and certain smaller ones (Phantoms w/ bubbles on). If someone is equipping these for the sake of damage, he might be referring to this.
