I love animals so much that I eat them.

I have had times in my life when I just didn't eat meat, I never considered myself vegetarian or anything, just could be bothered.

I don't see any difference between eating meat and eating plants, I am still consuming the life force of something else to survive. To draw a distinction between Animals and Plants is to do a disservice to plants. Some plants are more "alive" and thinking than some animals (especially some humans).

 

I understand why some people want to be vegetarian, but honestly, it's not any nicer. You're just killing more plants.

If you're doing it out of some kind of protest against inhumanitarian farming, or other farming practices, I agree with you(We buy most of our meat directly from farmers). Just remember, plant based farming burns MANY times more FOSSIL FUELS, so it's not any better on Nature, not to mention the destruction reaped on the Earth by farming.

 

Or, you could just support some local hobby farm that does things traditionally, then the impact of both meat and plant farming is minimal, and you support some hard working folk, not some giant corporation that didn't do anything for your money.

Oh, I wasn't expecting this, I was just being curious because I possibly had an anecdote to tell but I think you just started the debate my friend ! 

Just to be clear, I don't blame people who eat meat in any way, hell, all the people I know and love do and I've been doing it most of my life.

 

It's true there are similarities between eating plants and eating animals. 

However, If you use the idea of consuming life force to survive to justify eating meat, by the same logic everything else that fits in this classification becomes okay. Meaning pets or even fellow humans, yet, because there is a significant difference, most people consider these things not okay (thank God). Haha okay don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying you're defending cannibalism !

My point was : it is factually wrong to say that plants and animals are the same, they're not.

The similarities between eating meat and eating plants stop where the differences between plants and animals begin.

 

A plant can't be sad, terrified, angry, desperate, and that's my personal subjective take on it but I don't believe plants feel pain of any kind. 

They just are, they grow, and expand while seeking harmony with their environment. 

Again, that is just a personnal opinion, feel free to think differently, I'm not trying to convince anybody.

I'm trying to make sense of my own reasons for being a vegeterian, and why I don't feel the same about vegetal, animal and human life.

 

The way I see it, plants, minerals, animals and humans live in different planes of existence. 

By that, I don't mean than humans are superior to animals, animals are superior to plants etc.

Merely that they don't experience the same things.

 

I believe that the sensibility, consciousness and thus range of possible experiences of a dog, is extremely different from that of a spider or an ant. For instance, if we're talking about suffering, I believe that the very concept differs hugely between the dog and the bug, and that it doesn't apply to plants and minerals. Can they both suffer (dog and bug) ? Sure. Do they experience the same thing when they do ? No, they don't. Well, that's what I think at least.

 

That's the reason why I don't lose sleep over the bugs I may accidentally or unknowingly crush when I walk on grass. 

That's also why I'm okay if I see a kid playing in the forest, slashing plants with a wooden stick, pretending to slay monsters.

Now, if I saw my kid having fun with small bugs, killing them, playing with their life, I wouldn't get mad, but I'd try to explain to him that he's harming them and hope that sooner or later, (preferably sooner) he comes to the realization that it's wrong to hurt even bugs for no reason by himself. 

Laslty, if I saw someone purposedely harming, or being cruel to a more advanced form of consciousness , a pet, another kind of intelligent mammal or a human being (those are just examples) then I'd probably get mad and I'd try to stop it.

What I'm trying to say here is : as I consider these forms of life differently (not superior or inferior), I have different reactions and behavior towards them.

 

Anyways, people have their own individual reasons for being vegetarian or to keep eating meat, it's their own choice, I have no problem with that

and like you I certainly don't want to antagonize anyone. Personally, it's never been about reveling in a false sense of being nice. 

It's just about becoming more comfortable/happy with the things I choose to eat and possibly the way I choose to live.

I don't appreciate vegetarians who forcibly preach their message or display aggressivity towards people who don't share their views. 

Actually, that's also the way I see things in general.

 

Btw, in my case, it's true that animal cruelty was a crucial element in my choice, that's why I'm way more comfortable with local farming or even some forms of hunting. I did some spearfishing a few years ago, before I stopped eating meat and fish. Now I'm satisfied with just diving but I really do not mind people who do. There's great respect for the fish and the environment, moreover, between apnea, current, equipement, fatigue, visibility, aim, range etc. It's doesn't feel cheap or easy and I appreciate that + there's no cruelty and you get to eat what you hunted.

Hunting is probably the purest form of meat eating. Especially if everything is used (ie: Bones, offal, skin, fat, etc not just the meat).

 

Hell, if you can manage to grow your own food due to climate (Short growing season here), then go right ahead, you and the environment will both be better for it.

 

If it makes you happier and more comfortable in your own life, then that is what truly matters. To hell with what anyone else thinks, it's not impacting them, unless you make it, at which point it stops being OK.
