Am I reading too much into this?

It kind of dawned on me that DA2's companions (including Hawke) sort of cover storylines that one might've overlooked in DAO. Like if you played only one origin, you might get a taste of another story by playing DA2.

For example, Merrill picks up the Dalish story if you've never heard it. Varric kind of covers both Commoner and Noble dwarves. Fenris for the CE. Hawke covers both Amell and Human Noble stuff (and even the missing human commoner storyarc). Anders sort of shares the Circle thing with Amell too. Maybe Aveline could be an Orlesian Warden. Not sure where Isabela stands though.

Isabela could be the missing link for the Cousland story? After all Eleanor was once a pirate queen herself...

Maybe so.

I forgot about Sebastian. That's human noble too (almost exactly so, with him being the last of his line and all).

I dunno about Isabela to be honest - I'm confluzzed about her connecting to a origin, unless it's Tabris (an Orign that hasn't been mentioned yet so...)

Eleanor was a raider during the Ferelden Rebellion, that covers 8:44 Blessed to 9:2 Dragon. After the kingdom was freed she married Bryce Cousland and that was the end of it. Her father was the true raider even though he's also the bann of the Storm Coast. It's doubtful the Felicisima Armada was completely involved with the Ferelden Rebellion and it's doubtful Isabela was involved in it either back then.

And Merrill's a Dalish mage, which a lot of people wanted to play but had to go with warrior/rogue or else go the Circle mage route. Always thought that was interesting.

I think it's a trend that will continue... like how with Fenris we got to see the dregs of Tevinter, slavery, etc. and then DAI comes along and Dorian shows us how it is among the Tevinter elite, bringing his own perspective. If we get someone like, say... Calpernia in DA4, that's an entirely different look at the "same" situation.

We've had loyalist Sten and 50/50 could go either way Iron Bull, so I wouldn't bet against having a hardline Tal-Vashoth companion next time. We've had Dalish elves and elves from the city, so I wouldn't be surprised to see an alienage elf at some point... whatever perspective they haven't really touched on, that's what I expect to see.

Well Fenris.. I mentioned him being similar to Tabris. If only because they're City Elves... as well as fight nobles and Tevinters.

True. Well, maybe Isabela doesn't have a Origin?

Well, Isabela *met* the Hero of Ferelden... :P

But yeah, they do have a trend of using each companion as a representative of each society or worldview in the game, and that continued on into DAI. You are right about that, I think.

The downside is some of that dialogue space could probably be better used for more character development instead... sometimes the companions start to sound like a walking codex entry. But for the most part, I like how they will have the companions banter and argue with each other about their various cultures and points of view, etc.

Actually, that's how I saw DAA companions.

Anders - Circle mage like the Mage Warden (they're even from the same Circle).

Nathaniel Howe: Disgraced pariah human noble on the run just like the Human Noble.

Oghren: Disgraced former upper-class Orzammar dwarf like Dwarf Noble.

Sigrun: Former duster forced to work for Beraht to make ends meet, then joined an elite "die-fighting-darkspawn" organization that recruits Casteless like the Dwarf Commoner.

Velanna: A Dalish elf whose clan was driven out by a mob of local human villagers just like the Dalish Origin.

Justice: ... Well, they can't all be winners.

I feel like each Origin represented each major group in Southern Thedas, which each origin showing off each culture. Since DA2 forced you to play the Human Noble/Human Mage hybrid story (with a bit of the scrapped human commoner story for good measure), they needed the companions to show off those various factions for you. You can't play an elf or experience conflicts through elven eyes, but you can hear about the elves' plight by hearing Merrill's and Fenris's tales of woe; dwarf culture through Varric; etc.

Yeah, Velanna always struck me as very similar to my (aggressive) Dalish.. At least the bit where you can urge her to make up for her mistake. But you're right about all of them.

Funnily, Gaider originally wanted Nathaniel in DA2 instead of Sebastian. That would have been so much cooler. I don't even install Sebastian's DLC anymore.

I'm thinking now that Isabela sort of fits the same spot Sten did. Just on the opposite end. The absolute antithesis of Qunari. She belongs to nothing in particular. She's there to give voice to the "free spirit". While Sten is bound to ideals and duty.
