You could examine enemies at extreme range by using the mouse pointer. Only with a controller were you limited by the range of the camera.The problem with the tactical camera was range. By the time you get close enough to actually examine an enemy you're almost into combat anyway.
That was a real problem, but not unique to KBM.Plus it's problem with elevations.
It was the only auto-attack available at launch, and made it easy to give diverse orders (including move orders) to multiple party members simultaneously.The tactical camera wasn't very "tactical".
It's also the only way to interact with objects or loot at range.
