I have just got through playing origins and DA2 and have just started on inquisition as an archer, I played origins as an arcane warrior, DA2 as a twin blade rogue and have started inquisition as an archer but I'd be lying if I said I ever really got the hang of the combat in this series.

I checked out some builds on YouTube, the tempest archer looked amazing but the exploits have since been patched out apparently, but broadly speaking is it still viable?

Having never played a warrior character I have never understood how to spec them out.

I don't have Trespasser, so won't comment on upgrade toggles.  So for vanilla:

Yes, you can play archer (with any specialization) post Tempest nerf, and it will work out fine.  Archer is also isn't quite as challenging as playing a melee character if you are new to the game or haven't tried Nightmare yet.

The pre-skyhold builds thread has a decent enough progression for the archer early game.  I don't care for Poisoned Weapons much though.  The other thing is that if Friendly Fire is on, Explosive Shot is trickier to use.

There's no incentive to play the game with FF on. I played my first PT on hard with FF. Next PT probably gonna go with FF and nightmare.

Poisoned weapons is good in an early build if your playing a dual wielder as I use it on my DW rogues bu it's not quite so neccessary later on I don't think. Not sure about archers as I've not really played one yet at least not beyond the prologue

YouTube builds are OK, but reading a thread here on a class build is so much better, you get input from a whole community rather than some guy trying to sell u a build for subs. These below are some of the better ones for warrior and rogue. I personally favor the warrior reaver and Templar, hours of fun. CHECK OUT Gya's reaver or bigdawgs Templar build, I don't have link, do a bit of searching but it's the most fun build out there. The tempest and assassin r dual dagger but switch for Archer tree. I like the right side of Archer tree first but some people say its better to go left side first. Maybe someone nice can elaborate on what scenario fits left or right side first.

Hear, hear. I don't mind a video as part of a build description to show how it works, but I like to see a thread around a build. The Yo-Yo Bomber thread linked above benefited tremendously from people replying and pointing out mistakes or better ways to do things. I wouldn't give that up for anything.

On topic: all rogue builds are good. You have to try pretty hard to completely screw up a rogue build. That said, Archer is slightly easier than DW to build effectively, so go for it.

One downside of Archer, however, is that it can get a bit boring. Fighting at range all the time, plinking away shot by shot, gets tedious. It doesn't have the visceral feeling of being right in the bad guy's face (or back, in the case of a rogue) and stabby mcstabby stabbing them to death.

But there is a remedy for that tedium. Find some combination or sequence of skills that breaks up the monotony.

A build I've been meaning to post here but haven't gotten around to is a Tempest Archer build the takes advantage of the Flask of Fire/Flaming Chain upgrade. I've tested this and it is a lot of fun. The Flaming Chain allows you to use one ability after another, for free, as long as you don't repeat an ability.

So consider this sequence against a single target:

Flask of Fire
Poisoned Weapons - damage bonus and DoT
Full Draw - for First Blood damage bonus
Exploding Arrow - knock them down so you get maximum hits with
Leaping Shot - ... and then it puts you far enough away so that
Long Shot - gives you a distance damage bonus
(jog closer before duration runs out)
Throwing Blades - as the final unique damage dealer, that leaves the enemy sundered, assuming they aren't already dead
+1 more ability - you repeat whatever attack you want from above, which kills the Flask

There could be an 8th ability, but I reserve it for Thousand Cuts or other focus ability, because TC is awesome in its own right.

To keep things from getting boring, you can vary the sequence above. Or adapt the sequence to the situation. Endless combinations!

I'm still pretty early yet (about lvl 7 or 8) but what is the focus stuff all about? I used the combos a little origins but kind if ignored them entirely in 2 other than to setup brittle

You'll  get them once you get to Skyhold but basically focus abillities are powers that last a certain amount of time based on your focus level. You can't use these powers until you get to Skyhold though anyway so early game you don't need to worry about them it'll be explained to you once you get to the point they unlock. What abilities you have will be determined by whatever specialization you choose. The first one you get will be Mark of the rift which is an Area of effect ability. Whether you get the choice of another and what it does depends on what specialization you choose for your character

Tell us what games you are familiar with and we'll translate.

It's like the Witcher 2 or 3 Adrenaline bar and powers.

It's like the Fallout 3 VATS action points and skills, though closer to Fallout 4 critical hit bar in the way it fills up.

So does your focus carry or does it fade after a fight? In witcher for instance adrenaline (from memory) is powered by landing some hits, unless you got the upgrade you lost bars if you are hit and it begins to disappear shortly after a fight ends, is this what happens with focus?

No, focus doesn't fade unless you use a focus ability or play with the trial that depletes it whenever you travel to a camp.

no it stays charged until you use it but  they can take a while to charge so they're usually best used when fighting boss level enemies really as that's when you'll likely need them most. You can use these abilities whenever you like but I'm just saying that tactically they are most useful when fighting bosses.
