Hiya,

After watching the GDC talk with Patrick Weekes and John Epler, especially the bit about their film inspirations, I began to ask myself, "What movies would I like to see 'meet' to create a descent DA4?"

GDC Talk: Video

GDC Talk: Slides

This was their inspiration for Trespasser.

For me, I think it would be:

HBO's Rome meets Wrath of the Titans (Seems too straight forward I know - but it would be awesome)

My reasoning: Rome was filled with political/military corruption, combat, overindulgence and decadence of an elite empire "meets" Wrath of the Titans, the pursuit to prevent Hades from destroying the world by releasing Cronos upon it.

Together, this would be really good - if done right  :P

What would yours be?

More of another video game inspiration than a film I suppose, but Silent Hill. Because I love me some psychological fuckery. Probably would only fit in the Fade though, which I'm cool with.

3:10 to Yuma meets The 13th Warrior.

Basically, I want down-to-earth protagonists stuck in godawful, terrifying situations, subversions of conventional storytelling tropes and character archetypes, and culture clash out the wazoo. Also swords and dragons and leather chaps.

(Raiders of the Lost Ark vs. The Winter Soldier)

Well, that certainly explains why there's so much I don't like about DAI's narrative. ;)

Winter Soldier: lets blow up SHIELD as an institution for good because ... reasons.

DAI/Trespasser: lets blow up the Inquisition as an institution for good because ... reasons.

I like Raiders just fine, but is it really the best example of Truth Behind Mythology? I mean, if you had asked me a year before Raiders came out what I thought might happen if I opened the Ark of the Covenant, would I have guessed a bunch of sexy ghostly face-melting vampire zombie angel spirit thingies would come out and make my head explode? Who's "mythology" is that?

I think Hancock is closer, but still not quite right. Hancock exactly fits my expectation of what a Greek immortal would be like in today's world.

Is there a movie about Raven in Haida tradition? That's spot on. Raven is a trickster and also the bringer of light into the world.

I like the idea of Wrath of the Titans, plus, I would add something of Bioshock 2 to the merge, let's say that Solas has certain amount of artifacts and lieutenants at his disposal, the player eventually deals with them and has the option to destroy/kill them or spare them, depending of these choices, Solas can change his mind in the end.

Lawrence of Arabia
Huge romantic landscapes, getting involved in foreign cultures and playing them off of one of another. A lot of traveling. Befriending and potentially alienating or betraying new friends from other cultures, making you look at your own culture or hubris. Becoming an almost divine symbol, a powerful figure rallying the masses.

Landscapes.
