I've noticed that several members of the group have played Final Fantasy games, so I thought I'd start a thread discussing the series. Complaints, praises and everything in between.

I'll start by offering my top 3 FF games of all time:

1) FFVI. It still has (imho) one of the best villians in the series. There is a diverse cast, but not so large that the bench is getting crowded. The player loses to Kefka and spends the second half of the game in a destroyed world. The music, the characters, all of it gives me "da feels."

2) FFIX. I missed most of the Playstation era games, so this one wasn't played until about 5 years ago. Despite the rather goofy art style (Qunia mainly,) the story is quite deep and Kuja is an excellent villain. The sidequests are rich and varied, with some nice rewards. It also has, for better or for worse, the most difficult optional super boss in the series prior to FFXII. Ozma is a bastard, but it feels so good to kill him.

3) FFX tied with FFIV. I've talked about FFX quite a bit lately. FFIV is a part of my childhood and the new translations have made it even better. The character design still holds up and with the 3D versions, it's really challenging.

Favorite Classes in the series: Dark Knight (FFX-2,) Summoner, Paladin (FFIV) and Holy Dragoon (FFIV: The After years.)

I've only played 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 (I've been meaning to play 6, but I keep getting distracted by other games). Of those, FF9 is my overall favorite. Really liked the music, characters, and general ambiance of it all. Wasn't a huge fan of the Trance system, but otherwise, the combat felt balanced and engaging.

Then comes FFX. The combat was good, though things got bit crazy numbers-wise (don't even get me started on FF12's Yiazmat nonsense). It also got very grind-y for the optional stuff and being a completionist/obsessive compulsive type, it wore on me. The story and world, however, are my favorite of the series.

As for the others, I liked 7 but knew too much about the game to properly enjoy it, I appreciated the sidequests and side plots in 8 a lot more than I did the combat and main story, and 12 wasn't too memorable for me.

Can't say too much about job classes since the ones I played didn't really have any. I will say that Tonberrys are the best monster and Anima is the best summon, though.

Also, I'm sharing this because it's awesome:

I couldn't get through FFXII. Gideon Emery aside, I found myself bored. Plus, I loathed Vaan quite a bit. I own FFVIII, but I haven't played it yet. Otherwise, I've played all of the FFs except for FFXIII-2, because I didn't like FFXIII. I've beaten all of the older school FFs, save VIII.

X-2 is number 4 on my list. If you count any of the FFVII compilation games, Crisis Core is right up there too. "The Price of Freedom" is not only a track that will make me cry to this day, it's listed in my will as one of the songs I want played at my funeral.

The one I disliked the least that I did finish somehow was FFII. That was not only depressing, but had that awful old school tendency of increasing the monster levels significantly if you went the wrong way. I own the game, but I'm never playing it again.

Also, the bonus dungeon was one of the biggest wastes of time I've ever had, and I had an FFX save from the last save point that was at 165 hours. I farmed two Break Dmg Weapons and Ribbons for everyone. I think I'm a masochist.

Yeah, not doing that again. Auron and Yuna are the only ones getting ribbons and Tidus is getting a Break Dmg Limit weapon because that chocobo racing can rightly sod off.

"You Are Not Alone" is such an amazing track, especially at that part of the game. I guess that's why I was so hurt that the OC for DA:I was largely silent. I love tracks that tell the story as much as the game does.

I actually kinda like that tendency. Especially when you can exploit them like the lightning dragons in FF9.

Did you max your stats? I maxed my stats. Even Lulu's dolls were KO-ing suckers for 99999 by the end of my game.

I think the trick to the chocobo race is to focus more on getting balloons than anything else. The time I actually beat that chocobo race, I think I was hit by around 4 birds, but it didn't matter because I got like 15 balloons.

As far as FF9 goes, at least you didn't walk the wrong way heading towards the first town and died from mobs up to 5xs your level. I took advantage of the Level 5 Death trick, but you are warned by the moogles that you could die there. I appreciate a heads up like that. :P

I'm patiently waiting for 9 to come out for the PS4 PSN. My PS3 is about to bite the dust, so I can't download from there. I'm happy to wait though. It's worth it for one of the best and most overlooked entry in the series.

FF7 I didn't play until about 7 years ago, and that was after Crisis Core. I think it was a solid game, although Hojo is the real villain in my eyes. I can see why kids back in the day got so attached to it. Even the death of Aerith/Aeris/Hot Flower Girl made me a little choked up. It wasn't her dying so much as watching Cloud getting mindscrewed by Sephy again. I have fun farming for things like the Amazing Chocobo and the various summons. The Red Weapon went down in less than 6 rounds without using Knights of the Round. Plus, the soundtrack is pretty damned good for it's day.

I'm looking forward to the FFVII remake, even though it'll probably come out for my 50th birthday. So...2029. That is, if FF15 is anything to go by. And people think BioWare is bad. Anyway...

During my last session of FFX, most of my stats were maxed out, save for luck which was over 200. I was farming Dark Matters from Sleep Sprout in the Arena. Yuna, Auron and Rikku are the only ones I've ever gotten their Ultimate Weapons for legitimately because they are stupid easy. Well, without using my PS2 emulator and cheat codes for the rest of the group. Auron was doing 99999 by the end, and even Rikku was after taking her down both Tidus' path and Yuna's. Tidus even with his sorta-Celestial Weapon was doing 45000 by the end.

The funniest was Yuna after going down Rikku's, Tidus's and Wakka's path. She was doing 99999 while she was mugging an enemy. I was using the Standard Grid, not the Expert Grid and still did that. Alas, I am saving myself that much grinding this time. I might go with the Expert Grid next time since a warrior/healing Yuna just sounds like fun.

I might try the chocobo race again, but I don't know. We'll see how I'm feeling after I finish capturing monsters to unlock Nemesis. I was mainly grinding up for the Dark Aeons, especially the Magus Sisters. That turned out to be easier than I thought. I tried beating Penance without Zamato, but after literally 2 hours of the same battle, even with a walkthrough, I gave up. I gave Yojimbo over 10 million to finish that damned thing. Ozma was tough, but didn't take that long without Excalibur 2.

Ah, gotta love any weapon that requires the player to get through a 60+ hour game in 12 hours.

Hey, XV has finally a release date. Now all that's left for me is to wait for them to port it to pc. Maybe in 2051?

I've had some minor annoyances with X, but the one thing that is simply spectacular is the music. Nobuo Uematsu is for me a core part of Final Fantasy (although Yoko Shimomura seems to be doing some great stuff in XV), and in X his work is to me the strongest.
Case in point - Via Purifico
Spoiler

Or this from VIII

It's kind of wild, when you think that one of the FF songs (Theme of Love) is taught in Japanese schools.

I've only played VIII, X, X-2, and XII, but the first two are my favorites.

I know that FFIV and FFVI are up on Steam, so if you're curious check it out. "Dancing Mad" is my favorite villain theme in the entire series.
Spoiler

Speaking of songs that have been taught in Japanese schools, "The Dream Oath," also called "Maria and Draco," the opera from FFVI, has been performed live.

Uematsu pretty much wrote the soundtrack for my childhood. If I recall correctly, FFX was the last project he worked on before he went freelance.

One the subject of awesome Nobuo Uematsu tracks, it's not technically from a Final Fantasy game, but it's close enough:

That's pretty awesome. Truly one of the best composers out there.

I figured I might as well share my setup for dealing with Jumbo Flan pretty early on. He's the Arena boss that drops Magic spheres. He's also immune to all physical damage and loves to throw things like Flare and Ultima at the party. Finally, he has auto-relect and will cast Regen when he's low on health. All in all, a bit of a bastard early on.

Rikku has gone down Yuna's path since I could use a second white mage. Her magic stat is currently pretty crappy, but my team isn't very leveled up yet. Since she's got her Celestial Weapon, and since Lulu or Kihmari (my second black mage) aren't getting a Break Dmg Limit weapon, I'm going to focus more on Rikku's healing and use of Holy.

Here's what I did. First, I made sure Anima had Dispel, Haste, Shell, Lancet and Focus. This is pretty important. I also made sure her HP was above 9k.

When I start the fight, I have Tidus on a first strike weapon. He casts Hastega. Auron comes in with the Masamune equipped for more first stirke goodness. Yuna casts reflect while Auron sits there and looks pretty. Tidus then casts slow on the reflected party member. By the time that's all done, Yuna is up again. I then summon Anima.

When she's up, I cast Haste and Shell right away. This jelly jerk loves to start with Ultima, sometimes up to three times in a row. On Anima's next turn, I start using Lancet to regain health. It bypasses the effects of both Reflect and Shell, so it can make for some quick and efficient healing. Then I start getting Focus up to 5xs. I use Pain over and over again, using Lancet as needed. He'll eventually cast Regen, so dispel it and you're golden. Even though it takes a few minutes at 60k a hit, he goes down quickly enough.

Of course, the first time I successfully took him down, I got Dark Matter. :P

I miss having my FF games, I think the only one I have now is Crystal Chronicles and that is kind of limiting unless you have people playing with you and it's got such a wonky way of doing MP. At least the game cube version does. Not sure if Crystal Chronicles counts really for a Final Fantasy game though.

It counts more than Dirge of Cerberus or Mystic Quest. I don't care if Dirge is apart of the FFVII EU, it still sucked. Square needs to stay away from third person shooters. :P

I know that the FFX/X-2 HD Remix is available on the PSN for the PS4. You can also get it for the PS3 via a physical copy.

I've finally hit the point where I'm comfortably farming the Monster Arena. I'm still working on capturing stuff in the Omega Ruins and inside Sin. Now it's time to get those spheres going. I'm low on regular Power spheres and the like, so I'm heading out to Gagazet. The mobs are quick, easy and I've got Master Thief on Rikku. Frag Grenades are in the little robots in the area. I also use it to get Remedies from the plants around that area. Having power/speed/mana/ability distillers really help. :)

I've only played X, XII and XIII. Tried to get hold of VII and VIII when I was younger, but damn it was near impossible. Especially since I wasn't able to use the internet for it. Since VII is getting a remake, I'll pick that up at some point when it's released.

XII was the first one I played, and I really enjoyed it at the time. I'm a bit of an over-organiser so I spend ages happily setting up the perfect gambits. That made the combat rather boring, but I enjoyed it as a whole. The shine's worn off on replays in recent years unfortunately. XIII's combat was a little more interesting with the paradigm (?) thing, but again you could get stuck in a rut. It was a very pretty game with some beautiful music. Never quite sure where I was with the plot.

I'd say X was the best of the three by a long shot. I wasn't into Tidus or Yuna, but all of the characters had their own well-rounded personal story. You had some replay value by focusing on unique conversations with Tidus and Yuna/Rikku/Lulu each time. The story was interesting with a rich world, and I enjoyed the combat. My most recent replay was put on hold ages ago, because I couldn't defeat a boss and it was driving me nuts. I can't remember exactly which one, but I think it was on a mountain in a wasteland, just before they reach Sin?

I'd recommend Lost Odyssey to anyone who likes Final Fantasy. The story, characters and combat have a very similar feel, and it's a really emotional game. The '1000 years' stories are best saved until you're in the mood though, instead of reading them the moment they pop up. I ended up doing a marathon of them one afternoon, and was a sad mess at the end of it.

There's a few things I discovered while playing X-2. I'll put them in a spoiler tag, since it's a very long post. One thing I did want to share: The same VA that did Bodhan did the voice of O'aka. He sounds exactly the same. I think the VA has a default "merchant" voice that he uses for, well, merchant characters.

Yeah, if you ever watched the A-Team (series, not the movie), you'd see how much Dwight Schultz enjoys playing around with various accents as Murdock.

I grew up on the A-Team and "Mad" Murdock was my favorite. I just think it's funny that I've heard him do a merchant in three different games and he's sounded the exact same way. I gotta admit, he's one of the few actors that really sounds as animated while doing a character voice as he does on screen. :P

Well, I finished X-2...at 99%. I started the new game plus, mainly to try the Creature Creator. I had followed my walkthrough to the letter and still missed 0.2%. When I hit the woods again for Chapter 1, I got my 100% trophy pop up. I have no idea how I i did that, since I knew that I'd seen it before. Oh well. I don't mind and might as well go see that stupid tiny little scene that comes with 100%.

With the Creature Creator, I'd recommend it on a new game plus; you don't even have to leave the airship the first time to get started. A NG+ is preferred due to better gear, but also being able to recruit some characters you can't otherwise. You'd want capture and raise all of the enemies in each area. You throw down a trap (and it does look like a Pokeball) into a zone to catch some of monsters of various sizes. In order to unlock the holy-crap-what-is-wrong-with-you-sadists mega uber boss, you need to do this.

If someone is worried about overleveling the girls, just keep them out of your party while you're leveling the beasts. The walkthrough I'm using for that recommends that you use the Minvera Plate Garment Grid(which in X-2 means no exp) and using fiends instead of the girls for bosses. I'm not going to do that because I'm not letting a bunch of fiends that I can't control have all the fun. I'm still doing a lot less level grinding until after I get everything in Chapter 5,

The finished fiend tales can be funny and are almost always melancholy. It's an example of a special feature that actually adds to the lore. Fiends in FFX/X-2 are the souls of the dead that didn't come to terms to death while they were alive. They also weren't given a summoning, so their souls just linger there. Most have completely become monsters, but apparently some remember bits of their lives as humans. As a player, your job is to level them (either out in the field or just in the Arena with the Battle Sim) about 4-5 levels and then release them. It's pretty neat and I'm sure it's going to add a ton to my NG+.

I'm surprised we don't have more Final Fantasy fans here.  I guess Dragon Age is way more mature than Final Fantasy so I can see why there wouldn't always be overlap...I guess at my age it's just the game series that really got me into fantasy RPGs so I'll always read about what they are doing, even if I don't want to play the games.

I have no idea if I'll buy 15 or not, but I will be on the lookout for reviews and maybe listen to some of its music to see how it goes.  I did like the demo - the Carbuncle is super cute and I love cute things, and I liked the music, but I'm not sure how interested I am going to be in the storyline that they created for this one.  Since I'm in my 30's I also have to carefully choose what I might spend 50-100 hours on, so I only buy a few games a year due to time constraints.

I played Final Fantasy 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 14 - so exactly half of them.  I would rate them as follows:

1.  Final Fantasy VI - I really related to Terra when I was like 13 / 14 years old and hadn't yet been on a date (lol).  Kefka was an amazing villain, and I liked the decentralized cast.  I usually always had Terra, Celes, Mog, and some random person with me as I really loved those 3.  It was the first video game I played with strong female protagonists, and I absolutely loved that.  Watching Terra lead the group against Kefka, standing in front of everyone else, really got to me.  Also "Dancing Mad" was amazing.

2.  Final Fantasy IV - I played this game to death.  It helped that you could complete it in 20 hours, and that at my age I had tons of free time but not enough money to buy more than a few games a year.  I'm not sure if it's partially nostalgia, but it was the first RPG I played with a fleshed-out storyline.  I loved every member of final party.

3.  Final Fantasy VII - Memorable moments, and some great cast members.  The Meteor Summon used by the end boss is still amazing.

4.  Final Fantasy XIV - It's an MMO and therefore the storyline is a bit .... well, it's not smooth since you need to level oftentimes between story quests - but I liked how it returned to the series midevil roots at a time when they were releasing games like FFXIII - which aren't really my speed.

5. Final Fantasy X - I only played through this once, but this is because I had to rush through it on winter break from college.  I think at my age, I was starting to get old enough that I was losing touch with Final Fantasy characters and storylines and they started losing my interest, generally.

6.  Final Fantasy VIII - I had to force myself to finish this one. I hated the card draw system and I only really liked Rinoa as far as the cast went.

7.  Final Fantasy I - I resent this game because I got up to the final dungeon, and then my cartridge erased my save file.  Oh the horrible days when game saves were stored on cartridges and could not be backed up.  The game was grindy enough that I didn't care to start over, so I never saw the ending.

For FF1, I'd recommend getting either the Gameboy Advance port or the PSP port. There is a decent upgrade to the graphics, you can save anywhere and the bonus content isn't too bad. The ending really isn't anything to right home about, but if you want to knock it out and avenge your inner child, that's the best way to go.

FFVII is pretty good. I actually didn't play it until about 5 years ago and that's after I had played Crisis Core. Other than thinking that Hojo was the true villian and not Sephy, it was a good time. I replayed it before picking up X/X-2 again.

I couldn't really get into the FF MMOs, but I was playing a lot of WoW at the time. These days I fire up ToR on occasion (like last night) and that's about it. As long as you had fun, then that's all that matters. :)

FFXII. Man, I have never been so bloody bored playing a FF game in my life. Not even Gideon Emery's stellar voice acting could save that game. Between the unoriginal plot, plodding combat and Vaan, I have yet to finish the game. I bought it when it was new too

FFII. Stay away. No seriously, stay away. The story is very bleak. The gameplay isn't very intuitive, and no one stays in the fourth party slot. In other words, you might as well not bother to equip that character. Out of the 4 you get, only one of them doesn't die. Plus, it has that "wonderful" old school difficulty spike. In this case, I mean that if you take a step or two in the wrong direction on the world map, you will die thanks to mobs well above your level. Finally, the bonus dungeon is one of the biggest wastes of time you'll ever try to suffer through in a FF game.

Fun fact: FFX/X-2 is related to FFVII. There is a character in X-2 named Shrina (voiced by Bobby Hill's VA,) who's on the airship. The name isn't just a shout out. About a 1000 years after the events of X, Shrina's descendants leave Spira to go to Gaia. There was not a lot of fans happy about that one. :P

So, I've been doing more of this Creature Creator stuff in X-2. And I managed to get myself into an infinite loop yesterday. I was fighting some elementals. All they do is cast their element over and over again. I had a water-based creature that could absorb it and all that creature could do is cast. It sounded good in my head. See, that mob kept draining the creature's MP to the point of nothing. So my creature couldn't cast nor could the mob kill them. I reset the game.

I feel like there's an overload of FF lately. Between the remaster of XII (the Zodiac Age?), XV, XV related cinematic stuff (the movie does look good, they even got Sean Bean and Aaron Paul), VII remake, and World of FF, it's just a bit too much happening at once. And I haven't played anything since XII. I hoped XV would come to PC (not for the cast, more for the setting), but no luck.

At least the remastered XII looks exactly as I remember it looking, when I emulated it on my PC :P

And apparently Balamb Garden is pronounced oh-lamb.

The franchise is something of a beast. Besides the first 18 games (counting the MMOs, After Years and X-2/XIII-2) there is:

Dirge of Cerberus
Crisis Core (Too bad it's PSP only)
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Chocobo Tales (I think there is two of those)
Chocobo Dungeon 1&2
The Crystal Chronicles (there's also a FF related anime to that)
Cellphone mini-game ports (like the snowboarding game from FFVII)
World of FF
The Spirits Within (which damned near bankrupted the company)

The games in the main series by themselves, holy crap. SE loves their ports. I love a lot of their ports, but it's fracking stupid now. I'm only going off of the top of my head here, but this list is getting out of hand.

FF1: NES, GBA, PSP, PS3 network, Steam, Android and iOS
FF2: GBA, PSP, Android, IOS and the game still isn't worth it
FF3: GBA, DS, Steam
FFIV: SNES, GBA (buggy,) PSN, PSP, Android, iOS, DS, Wii, Steam.
FFIV After Years: Wii, PSP
FFV: PS1, GBA, Android, iOS, Steam
FFVI: Same as above, but give it time...
FFVII: PS1, PSN (including the PSP,) PC (that was awful,) and the remaster coming soon
FFVIII: PS1, PSN (PS3)
FFIX: PS1, PSN (PS3). Coming soon to Android, iOS and Steam
FFX: PS2, PSN (PS3/PS4), PS3 and PS4
FFX-2: Same
FFXII: PS2 and (likely) PS4 for the remake.

Can they knock this porting frenzy off and I don't know, finish the next freaking game? BioWare devs have mentioned before that they aren't fans of doing remasters because it takes manpower and money away from main projects. I would love a ME remaster for the trilogy, but I'd rather see a new game come out first. Squeenix up there is my big reason why. They've been so focused on getting their 3rd party companies to port everything and doing remasters that it took a decade for XV to get a release date.

Yeah, the XII remaster is confirmed for PS4 (only). You must be happy about that, since I know it's your favourite one  ;)

It's so bizarre that XIII and Versus XIII/XV were announced at the same time. XIII squeezed out 3 games and XV is still not here yet. SE has really some management problems. And just wait for Nintendo NX and the updated xbox and ps to come out, SE will start porting everything.

I don't see the ME remasters happening, X1 already has ME1 and will get 2 and 3 through backwards compatibility, and PC can still run them fine, so they would really only be doing it for PS4. And the full remake route (with Frostbite and everything) is just too expensive, it would probably be like making new games.

I hear you. It isn't my least favorite game, but it's next to last. The graphics were pretty nice and have held up decently. The voice acting is fantastic, and Gideon Emery is a pleasure to hear as always. Most of the characters are pretty good, with the exception of Vaan. But the story and the gameplay was boooooring. I kept nodding off and the MMO-like elements were a turn off for me. Props to the folks that enjoy the game. For my part, I bought the game brand new when it first came out. The last time I tried to play on my emulator, I got bored at 12 hours in and played Chrono Cross for the first time.

@Biotic. As much as I've heard folks bash on EA, they don't a candle to SE as far as nickle and dimeing the customer goes. SE, with the exception of IPs they picked up like Tomb Raider, is basically just living off of older FF games and their ports. They don't think they have to try very hard anymore and boy howdy, it shows. Some of the old guard that left Square stated that the company was losing their way. They forgot that they ruled the RPG console market in the 90s because they worked their nuts off. Now that the competition is much stiffer, they've been content to sit on their laurels.

That's without getting into series that SE has both forgot. Fans of Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest have been waiting for years for a direct sequel. The team behind Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross have long since gone freelance or to other companies. Square has shown little interest in trying to bring back the members of that team, despite repeated fan requests. Xenogears deserves a proper third game. If they are going to continue with the remasters, they should start with those. DW is getting it's share of ports now, but to be fair not a lot of them made it to the states in the first place.

Yeah, I don't see a ME remaster either. The only thing I would like is if they release the whole trilogy on the PSN on the PS4. I own it on PC, and I use mods, but sometimes it's just easier to keep my two dogs happy if I stay in the living room.

Most of the characters are pretty good, with the exception of Vaan.

Funny you should mention that. This is the most liked comment under the news of the remaster:

"And yet they’ve failed to implement the one improvement that really matters. Why is Vaan still here?" :D (And agreed, he was terrible)

People really forget about the stuff some of the other companies are doing, because hey, hating EA is hip. Anyway, Tomb Rider, Thief, and Deus Ex - that's Eidos. SE might have bought them, but their influence hasn't reached that far yet. They tried with the preorder levels for the new Deus Ex, but that backfired spectacularly. Turns out screaming "PAY US MORE!" at customers doesn't really work that well.

Huh, they did forget about a lot of series. I'm wondering, if XV is coming so slow, because they'd rather play it safe with the ports and don't want to risk anything with a new game.

It's weird, the big Japanese gaming companies that thrived earlier are really failing now. Nintendo struggles in the console market and is riding out their old IPs, SE does, what they are doing, Konami murdered Silent Hill and is now shoving MGS into gambling machines, and Sega is still trying to make Sonic work. Only Sony is doing well, because of the great exclusives and good hardware (and because MS handed them this generation, with that disaster of a reveal).
