You know how on Dead Space when you open up the menu it pops up in front of your character? Well imagine that but the camera zooming in first person mode to navigate the Omni-Tool menu to upgrade all your stats, save game, go back to main menu ect... I think this would add to the immersion immensely and actually show something on those otherwise blank orange holograph screens.

Here is what I'm talking about -

Imagine this but zoomed out showing the arm plus this menu.

Three new threads in half an hour?

noice

But yes, I loved the way Dead Space handled the UI. I wouldn't mind Mass Effect implementing something similar.

Nothing says immersion like going onto my Omni-tool to change my difficulty.

Heh. Yeah, but it'd be nice for stuff that actually is in-universe. Looking up Codex entries, checking on supplies, etc.

That's a pretty good idea. Maybe a holographic projection from the tool or something.

Sounds like the Pip Boy.

I approve of this idea but hope it doesn't look like it's ripping off another game?

I like the idea. Sort of a combination of Dead Space's RIG and Fallout's Pipboy.

I think that is actually less immersive, especially when pausing during a fight. We already have the tactical pause, so that might be too similar to that. I honestly think the pausing (both normal and the tactical one) are fine as they are.

That's what I was thinking.

If it's done well, then yes.

Only better! I do prefer the deadspace one as it's more holographic and less, clunky 50's tech.

My question would be, would it pause the game though? Would be amusing if a firefight carried on around us as we checked our codex. Terrible for gameplay but funny.

But no Oddjob.

People who play Oddjob are worse than Krogans who don't headbutt back.

I think the only time accessing an omni-tool interface would really work is if it's for a hacking minigame. In that case though, if we're under attack, the game would just automatically take us out of it and the character would rearm.

MGSV: The Phantom Pain did a similar thing with their pause menu, basically integrating it into the game. The action around the player didn't stop when they were staring at the menu so it offered a tactical aspect, many times you could get killed while you were looking at the map or sorting through objects. So it's a tried and tested idea that crops up in more games than Fallout. I think it could be a nice little idea.

However, we are unfortunately humans after all, so I would appreciate also maybe being able to hit the "P" button on the keyboard and the game just pauses so I can.. well.. go take a p.

It's been implemented in other games than Fallout because depending on how it is implemented, it tends to be an immersive or simpyl likabable mechanic. For inventory, journal, codexes and maybe saving, I would especially appreciate it. The pause option, however, should still be a button, in my opinion.

Space pip boy!

Nah.

With the pip boy, it was like, HOLD ON, DEATHCLAW. DON'T KILL ME TIL I GET SOME STIMPAKS AND A MISSILE LAUNCHER READY. DON'T MOVE UNTIL I PUT MY PIP BOY DOWN!

'Twas kind of silly.

Is there some other kind of tactical pause you would fine more immersive?

You seem to be criticising the pause itself rather than the specific implementation.

That's because it would be a huge pain if the pip boy didn't pause the game.

A normal pause menu like Skyrim has no functional difference and I can still make bandits wait while I devour 500 potatoes at once to heal.

I just said it was silly, in my opinion. You can say it's silly without criticizing. As in silly: it made me laugh and surprised me.

But I said "Nah," because that's Bethesda's thing, not Bioware's thing.

There was that concept art of the player looking at a holographic map of a planet using his omni-tool, so I think this is something we might see
