I couldn't find an existing thread that is similar enough. But what do you guys expect from a space battle, if ME:A were to have any?
The ones that I mainly remember are the Quarians vs the Geth Dreadnought and the final battle for Earth in ME3.
I think I can give the first one a pass, since the Normandy appears after the battle has already been going on for a bit, so it is understandable for the scene to be a bit chaotic.
However, for the Battle for Earth, there did not seem to be much strategy behind the attack. How did they all manage to fire at the reapers without hitting each other? That battle could have had more strategic structure imo.
Space has no direction. It is in 3D. I hope whatever space battles we see in the next game will have that in mind, and have more thought put into the ships' positions as well as where their fighters are (not in direct line of fire).
I do not envy the cinematic director whose job it is to not only understand naval tactics, but extrapolate them into 3D while managing to portray a coherent visual story to the player. Dogfights are easy enough because we have real life analogs to follow, but essentially everything else has to be played by ear.

I think their previous efforts have been mostly fine. Considering that cool space battles are really hard even for things about them, I think ME did a decent job of implying that there is a cool space battle going on, even if you don't see it that directly.
That said, speed I think is the best thing they could add to what they've done. Aircraft are fast. Spacecraft are insanely fast.
I would kill to have space battles! I think they should learn from AC4: Black Flag to have an epic scale of space dogfights should feel like.
Or they could borrow from something which actually did epic scale space dogfights rather than arcade age of sail combat.

Sorry, no space battles or a space SIM is Andromeda to be. Though, from a planet colonization PoV and establishing a solid foothold in the cluster, bumping against an inimical space faring race does strongly suggest the inevitable space combat, planetary bombardment and mano-a-mano fighting. But, with Mass Effect having no Space Marines, our Fire Team of three (from a squad of 6-7) is all we have.
I suspect that our AI Field Agent Units are the ones to engage in potential space combat, via our Central Control Directives. The AI FAUs will establish Outposts for Defense and Intelligence gathering activities, according to the leaked info. If we are lucky, we may yet see a cinematic or two of AI units doing "their thing".

I do expect at least one space battle, or our ship escaping from one. As much as the battles in the previous games looked cool, some aspects just threw me off. I hope they put more thought into the cutscenes, so as to make it seem like there is an actual military strategic plan behind them.
AI shipwarfare does seem pretty cool, but there must be something that makes us care as to any casualties, if the crew is essentially hardware.

The strategy in all mass effect space battle seem to be a full frontal attack. That's because mass effect isn't focus in space battle, cutscenes are only there to show you that there is a space battle going on.
The battle for Earth was merely a distraction to be able to dock the crucible so their intention was to draw the attention of the reapers. The strategy there is simple: draw a full scale frontal assault to clear the way to the citadel while a group of ships escort the crucible there.
A 3D battle cutscene as you suggest will be extremely chaotic because you will lose all sense of direction. It will also be extremely difficult to elaborate.
I don't think Andromeda will have many space battles because the Ark is only one ship. It could carry other ships and they could build more once they arrive but the number of ships will be very limited. Also the local civilizations won't be much advanced, otherwise they could wipe out the Ark and all the invaders easily. So don't think there will be large space battles in Andromeda.
BTW I'm developing a space battle game using mass effect ships. You can download it here. It is still in development so it only has 3 game modes (full scale battle, assault a space station and escort a freighter) but I'm now working in a story campaign that will use a combination of those game modes.

I'm really liking the ship models. Is this a mod of an existing game or did you make it from scratch? It looks awesome. I'll try it out when I'm done with my finals.

Thanks! It is a custom game engine that some friends and I built as a university project and I've readapted to handle a space combat simulator. So it is practically made from scratch. Some of the ships are directly extracted from mass effect files, others are from the Homeworld mod made by Phoenix Interactive and others are made by VinBron.

Space shooters were among my favorite games.. but for some reason, it's a genre that died out a little.
That said, I never really saw ME's potential here. I like the fighters at the end of ME3, but everything else looks boring and sluggish. I would like better cutscenes, but I don't care to play in anything like that.

Yeah, Wing Commander and Freelancer were what really got me into gaming. I would love Bioware to take a crack at the genre (not in the ME-verse though). I think their strength in storytelling and characters could work well.

Yeah, WC is pretty much tops for me. I didn't actually finish Freelancer.. I liked the gameplay, but it didn't have the narrative. I guess he planned it to be more open (or as an mmo at one point). Sounds like Star Citizen is the same.

Yeah, nowadays I'm definitely more about the story so I'm not really hyped about SC. I'm hoping (eventually) it'll prove me wrong. I think it would have been better served if Chris Roberts had started with a story-based game to expand from and get a core foundation of players to invest themselves. It just sounds too ambitious to ever be fully realized. I think Bioware could pull it off by keeping the scale more realistic, (I know wishful thinking.)
You forgot the battle of the Citadel, battle of Palaven and, more small-scaled, fight with the Collectors ship. Though, the battle of the Earth was the biggest and most epic one.
I don't necessarily need some active space battle gameplay, but I would love to see more scenes like those in MEA.

I think people got confused. I didn't mean to suggest actual space battle gameplay, just better cutscenes. But that could be a good idea, depending on how well it's done.
I am ok with them mostly going the rule of cool in the space battles actually. As much as I am all about lore and as much as I like the descriptions about proper tactics in the codex, I have to admit, if they really would adhere to it, things would look pretty boring (ships would be so spread out for most of the fight that you wouldn’t see more then one or two in a any frame and if it’s two they’d probably be allied and flying formation.
The only ships who should go into close range would be fighters and maybe the odd frigate. Also, fighter dogfights wouldn’t happen a lot, most of them would just be shot down by GUARDIANs.
So if they have to go away from the what things would be like theoretically, they might as well go all out and show something exhilarating. I mean, technically, even most of the ground battles are all happening at ridiculously short range, so why draw the line at space battles?
