Well, people you can hug who you don't romance, but yeah, that is what we're talking about after all. I actually sacrificed Hawke after my first playthrough (poor Stroud) partly because I changed my worldstate to see Alistair as a Warden and just couldn't leave him there, and also because of what Flemeth said to Hawke I will assume she's alright until proven otherwise (Weekes did emphasize that we Never Found The Body).

I sacrificed Hawke in my first PT too, cause I had messed up my Keep import and got male!Mage Hawke, instead of fem!Rogue Hawke. So I was all "You're not MY Hawke! You can stay in the Fade."  <_< Tho I didn't use the (Hug him) option with Varric, cause I wasn't sure if he would want that in that situation.  (and I didn't want to lose more approval, even tho I banished the Wardens)

I know, right? This is exactly what I was about to say! I mean, wow, wasted opportunity! And that pat on the shoulder was barely even a pat on the shoulder. I mean, I'm glad I got to hug him in the romance here (and other places) but the whole point of that hugs can be, and often are, platonic too. Like... most hugs. I wanted to hug him with my canon Quizzy who didn't romance him, but noooo.

I fully agree with this!

People don't stop being straight, people don't stop being gay. It just means that they view it as the norm instead of making a big deal about it.

If it isn't a norm in reality and sheer numbers, then it won't be viewed as one either. There's no amount of social engineering you can do to change that. But you could probably have people not "make a big deal" about it. That should be good enough.

Exactly. Unfortunately this isn't going to happen as long as people keep crying and trying to censor certain depictions of characters, stereotypes or not. When certain groups of people are "off limits" as it were when it comes to being joked about, or be made to look bad, or be a certain type of villain, you (general you) are highlighting that they are different. People are always talking about how we need to get away from the "straight white guy is the norm" mindset, but then go out of their way to reinforce that way of thinking sadly.

Media have power, they can affect perception. The south of America is for example really badly perceived, even hated, especially from people who aren't white. I don't know any black guy that has a good or neutral opinion of South of America, while they never went to the United states and don't actually know anything about the south of America. On tv, in movies, in documentaries, they only see the same things about people living in the south of America. Racists, ignorant and uneducated people, homophobes, religious fanatics, white suprematics and KKK, segregation, people loving fanatically their weapons, violent rednecks. That's it. The foreign media never seems to show another side of that region lol.. It should. Because it feels like this place is really disgusting for many, populated of disgusting people.

Those who live in the South of America know that it's far from being just that, but those who don't, can only relate to what is only shown to them again and again in media, even if they know not everyone is the same.

Yes, make no big deal about it like how Steve was talking about how he was married to a man and Shepard didn't act surprised, how his relationship was treated the same way as if he was married to a woman and how if he was straight, nothing would change about his character and his story, there wouldn't be any significant behind his story and him being of any race or any gender or any sexual orientation wouldn't make a different for his character and the game. That is what I want, a character who is not defined by his sexuality, how his story has nothing to do with his sexuality. I have never talked about number, I'm not sure how you would define as the norm, but what I define as a norm is basically simply treating it as if it wasn't a big deal, people don't get surprised when someone announces that they will get married to someone of the same sex.

That's kind of hilarious..

I'm in the South. But maybe this makes me safe. No one would ever want to invade a shithole like that. lol. It sounds like Mad Max.

Being a black man from the south, and a biracial one at that, I can tell you the racism stereotype is real, and very prevalent in black and white communities here. That said, it is definitely overhyped, and even when we face it, most times people are like "meh", the way we are when hurricanes come around. Bad cases of it definitely do happen, but not nearly as much as the liberal media portrays. Same goes for homophobia. We may not have as liberal of an environment as California, but we're not ignorant to the existence of gay men and women.

We do have a lot of religious kooks though. And I say that as a Christian, lol.

You live in SC.. which is "deep south" to me. But even then, South Carolina is looking more and more cool. Charleston seems to look like Austin now.

According to the portrayal in video games, I should be wearing a swastika armband and fret about my Tiger getting fixed before morning.

Man, some tourists are going to leave disappointed.

That's why saving before each conversation is a good idea!  :wizard:  Though I don't over-do this on a first playthrough, it's good in case a paraphrase was totally different from what you expected. I don't do it to gain max approval, I just want to know what my options are and pick the one most suited to my character.

I remember a recent scandal where a southern brand of SAE sing about lynching blacks as a part of their traditional song. It was in playful tone, or guys just being guys. I don't think everyone would sing and cheer to a song about lynching or at least would get uncomfortable and say something. There's a lack of exposure, especially if the people you hang out with have the same opinion as you or don't have a different opinion on your view and what you say. People would just reinforce each other what kind of thoughts and behaviors are ok, especially if they get the wrong views on a certain groups.

Yea, it is definitely the least southern of the low country areas, we get a lot of tourists, and people from all over the US come to live in Charleston. A lot of our "red necks" are fake ass rich boys with big elevated mansions, ridiculously huge trucks that never saw a bale of hay in their lives, and fully paid for by their moms, lol. Not everyone though. Different in other areas like Summerville or Awendaw.

I would use myself as an example. i'm actually having a negative view about Detroit, people talking about the place being violence and a lot of robbing. I've never been there, but I have this kind of view because of the media and how other characters are afraid whenever Detroit gets mentioned. That place may or may not be so, I don't know, but because I lack the knowledge of the place, my view is being colored prematurely because of how I saw the place is being portrayed. That doesn't mean that I would talk about it badly or saying something bad about it everything Detroit is brought up, but on a subconscious level, I have a negative view about the place.

That's pretty screwed up to me. They should know better, just by virtue of being humans. You don't need a special upbringing to understand that.

But I think all fraternities are shitty.

Well, i'm British so i'm apparently a villain according to most American media. So many villains have British accents even when every other character is American and it doesn't make sense (The Lion King and Sleeping Dogs being two of the more egregious examples.) Even when the bad guy is American he's played by a British actor, putting on an accent haha. Like Gary Oldman playing the part of Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK.

You're not a villain, you just have bad teeth. :P

Most Americans love British and French accent, to be honest. I have never heard of British being villain. The stereotypes I have heard of British are they have bad teeth and proper. When you see a high class character, they speak with a British accent.

It's called the evil Brit trope. I'm talking about films, TV and videogames though, not just everyday stereotypes.

Dragon Age 4: Hawke punches her way out of the Fade.  Accidently causes the collapse of the Veil.

Yeah, but being a british villain usually means you're a sophisticated villain!

I've heard it argued that this is because americans still haven't thrown off the colonial cultural inferiority complex.
