^ I've gotten used to the Maker variations in fanfic writing, primarily "thank the Maker," but I haven't managed to work in the rest. I think it really depends on the context and the way the person says it. There is one instance where Cassandra says "sweet Andraste," and Dorian says, "sweet Maker" that I think sound pretty good, the tone they use and so on.

This is another case of "Inaccurate paraphrasing strikes again!" unfortunately. I ended up picking this line by accident in the fade in my first playthrough, since the paraphrase was "Oh crap."

I think it's important to expressly label a paraphrase where your character will curse accurately, lest these things happen. Fortunately, the one in Trespasser was blatantly obvious, so hopefully that will keep happening.

Also, paraphrasing in general needs to be better, but the problem could be solved completely if they gave us the ability to preview the entire line if we hover over the paraphrase for long enough. I liked that I'd know exactly what my Warden would say ahead of time.

Ahaha... I agree with your remarks here, but I did think the "Oh sh*t" in the Fade was quite humorous, primarily because it was unexpected and did remind me of Varric. I don't pick that line normally and this was one of those "let's pick all the options and reload" plays.

But generally, yes, I do think we should be warned if we're going to swear. There is one instance at the beginning, during the first cinematic conversation with Varric, where the paraphrase is, "This is all bullsh*t," but I don't know what the spoken line is.

Yeah, I think it can sound fine depending on how it's used and spoken. Along the same line, I think variations of "Andraste's left whatever thing" can be humourous just because they're long-winded (and ridiculous), kind of like an amusingly exasperated cluster-curse.

Actually, during my last playthrough my curiosity got the the better of me and I picked it (also in a "Let's pick everything and reload" way) and I'm pretty sure the line was "I wish none of this s*** had happened!" which honestly didn't feel very Dragon Age-y to me, but your mileage may vary.

I could have appreciated more:

"You're a real a-hole Solas."

"Hey Solas, f--- you."

"So, you were too much of a b---h to make your Magic 8 Ball come to life so you had to use a Magister."

"Suck a bag of d---- Solas."

Yeah, definitely needed more swearing.

*flipping him off and giving him the stunner* :P

I wouldn't mind the "cursing" that you had in FFX-2, "oh poop." "Yunie! Language!" "but I was just copying you."

Sometimes though I think writers can get carried away with the swearing. I think the F-word is overused now, just from Game of Thrones I am not so bored of that word in fantasy settings.

I think the "overuse" is fine since most people tend to swear more than the average game shows.

Yeah, but that hardly makes for serious meaningful dialogue. Imagine it; it would sound ridiculous.

Generally, I don't like cursing, but I don't mind it that much in DAI.

Tho I could totally go without Bull using F every few cutscenes  <_<

I DO like the longer, Thedas-like cursewords tho.

Sometime ago I switched to english from german, yesterday I played Multiplayer in english for the first time and I can say, I prefer to hear Izzy's say:

"Slap my butt and call me Andraste!" instead of "Heilige Scheisse!" (Holy Sh!t) whenever she sees a treasure room.

What I also like to hear is Skywatcher's "By Korth's stony arse, would you look at this?"

I'd be fine with it, especially if it is during companion interactions.... Specifically characters like Jack, Bull, and Sera.

Yes, considering that swearing in Medieval times was common enough, I suppose.

If you want realistic cursing and cussing, look at The Witcher trilogy for that (particularly Witcher 3). Bioware's cussing and cursing is very sanitized and politically correct in comparison.

Thanks to Oghren, I now use variations of, Sod, and, Sodding, rather often, ya sodding nug humpers.

It's funny because love Jack and Sera. But hate Bull completely. I know that he's probably appealing to the same tastes, but I feel stupid for even having him on a screen.

Well, his brother was kind of dwarfy. I loved Bartrand... nasty though as he was.

You do know Sod and sodding refers to sodomy.Amazing how many people don't know that.

Like how Oghren is such a serious character :P. There's a nice example of how no one takes that foul language seriously. I prefer Seras' little things over outright swearing, shite is superior to the s-word.

Swearing has always been around.

In the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, there are tens of thousands of lines of graffiti that have been found scribbled on walls. As one might expect of graffiti, whether ancient or modern, a good deal of it is quite vulgar.

Yes, if any proof exists that human nature never changes, it's the Pompeii grafitti. (Warning: contains filth of all kinds.)

My favourite will always be the line written on a wall: "Theophilus, don't perform oral sex on girls against the city wall like a dog." (Because, for Jove's sake, Theophilus, have some manners. Buy her dinner and take her home first!)

The only words I find misplaced are:

1) Varric exclaiming "Jeez!" at one point, since that's a corruption of "Jesus!", who doesn't exist in Thedas. They have Andraste.

2) Varric commenting that Cassandra is "crusading" (as in searching/fighting for a holy cause), since they don't have Crusades in Thedas; they have "Exalted Marches."

Otherwise, yeah, base curse words like sh-t and f-ck and whatnot are Old and Middle English words that were actually used in medieval times.

Not swearing, but what about this? I'm pretty sure that Theodore Roosevelt was never emperor of Orlais...

Yeah, I've actually complained about this before. The dialogue list in DA:O was better, imo, because you knew exactly what your warden was going to answer. However, some players thought it was tiresome to read sometimes so it wasn't flawless either. The idea of being able to read more if you hover over the dialogue option would prolly be the best.

It's a bit ridiculous currently. For example, I want one of my Inquisitors to be strict and blunt, so I pick an option like "Let's keep moving" but instead he says something like "I don't have time for this, you fool" and ??? I don't want to be rude to my companions DA please
