All Metal, all the time! This discussion is for anything and everything related to metal. It can be thrash metal, classic metal, death metal, metal core, something you think might be metal but you're not sure, doesn't really matter. Alternative stuff too, rock related in general really, just something you can head bang and rock out to!

Starting it off with the guys that pretty much invented Metal, and with what people consider to be the first metal song:

And one of my favorite songs by them, Electric Funeral:

And apparently they're only having one final tour? :(

I mostly listen to Power Metal, and some progressiv. So for me its more in the line of Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater etc. I don't mind me some Black Sabbath though, just not my first choice.

Also leaving my favourite Sonata Arctica song which is just a masterpiece, take 8 minutes out of your day to listen to it, you will not regret it.

I love symphonic metal mostly, but I also had an ex who was a huge metal fan, and he got me somewhat into Megadeth and a few others.

My roommate has forced me to acquire a taste for some metal, largely folk metal  though as that's mostly what she listens to.  Tyr, Alestorm, Trollfest, Blind Guardian and a few others are sprinkled throughout there.  I also went to a show with her last year in Charlotte, and that was fun.

I still respond with my own tastes in music on occasion though, she might be able to recite a few German marching songs if she really tried

Here's a funny concert story that I think you guys might get a chuckle out of.

So a few years ago, there was the tour with Testament, Megadeth and Slayer. It was at DU and it was pretty good. Well, aside from the Drunk Slayer fans, but that's a different story. Anyhow, Sasquatch and I were out in the smoking section and we see this guy freaking out just outside the barrier. My husband and I shot each other a look, immediately trying to guess what that kid was on.

The kid, who looked like he was in his early 20s, let us know soon enough.

"I'm on mushrooms! God, the cops are coming for me!"
<then to his girlfriend>
"I've got coke! They'll find the coke on me, I know it."
<girlfriend has the mother of all facepalms going on>

I'm not sure how familiar you guys are with mushrooms, but one of the things it can do is take away your indoor voice. So naturally everyone in the smoking section, security and the local PD that showed up as extra security heard this. It was everything Sasquatch and I could do from laughing our butts off as the guy was hauled away.

The best part? My husband was going to work the next day, and his job is in the complete opposite direction of this concert. He needed some caffeine, so he stopped by the gas station right by his office. The person behind the counter? The poor girlfriend from the concert. See, Sasquatch had mentioned what happened at the Slayer concert, and she said, "Oh! That's my now ex-boyfriend. Yeah, he got arrested on drug charges. I broke up with him last night. I didn't know he was tripping or that he was carrying coke."

Priceless.

Mostly symphonic metal (Within Temptation, Nightwish, Epica, Delain) though I do listen to various other types of metal (stuff like Iron Maiden, Arch Enemy, Halestorm).

You've got some good taste. :) <honorary like>

Iron Maiden is on my "must see" list. I've seen Guns and Roses er Axl Rose; Sabbath, Judas Priest for their final international tour and I am very lucky I got to see Motorhead. (RIP Lemmy) Maiden is one that Sasquatch is going to use a day of vacation so we can go see them live. I've also loved Halestorm since I saw the Golden God awards and she was first getting started. I'd love to see them as well.

I was a huge Type O Negative fan, and I'm a fan of Doom Metal in general. I'm also into industrial, like Wumpscut, old NIN, Skinny Puppy/Ogre solo and KMFDM.

Iron Maiden's coming to my country for the first time this year (though I unfortunately won't get to see them). There's not a lot of metal bands coming my way so Arch Enemy's the only one I've seen in concert (they were great).

I saw Iron Maiden live with my brother a few years back.  :P  It was a pretty awesome show. During one song, these huge jets of flame came out of each side of the stage, and despite being near the back of a stadium, I could feel the heat a little bit. I felt a little bad for poor drummer Nicko McBrain, who probably got the worst of it.

Anyway, I don't know if I should say this is a confession or just a weird thing about me, but in high school I listened to a lot of extreme metal, including the weird Scandinavian Satanic black metal. I could get away with it because the band logos were almost always unreadable (can you get "Dark Throne" out of this nonsense?), the lyrics were always in Norwegian or Swedish, and even if they were in English, the screams of the vocalists were completely unintelligible. They also all wore corpse paint and generally made themselves out to look like members of the KISS army (check out these badasses), so it was quite hard to be genuinely intimidated by them. Meanwhile, my parents generally maintained a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy on all of this.

I guess I grew out of it, got tired of it, or something, but by the early to mid-2000s I was mostly on to other things. Still, it probably shaped the way I listened to music long after. For example, singing in black metal was not a priority, so I suppose I conditioned myself not to care too much about singing. And to this day, a huge percentage of the music I listen to doesn't have any singing at all.

Anyways, here are a couple samples from my corrupted youth:

Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger:  The muffled sound of the song isn't due to the sound quality of the video; it was widely believed by black metal musicians that intentionally poor production values made your music more "grim." Also, here an actual lyric: "Hail to the True Intense Vampires!"

Sigh - Bring Back the Dead: Sigh is a postmodern black metal band from Japan. This song is very weird and eclectic, but strangely catchy.

Celtic Frost - "Dethroned Emperor": Celtic Frost is to heavy metal what Joy Division is to Rock and Roll--massive influence everywhere. If you can get past the odd pronunciation of the title ("DA-throned em-PER-or!!"), this song has a nice groove.

Esoteric - "The Secret of the Secret": Esoteric is an extreme doom metal band from the UK; can't think of a way to describe this except to say that it's probably not for everyone. :)

Anathema was another doom metal band also from the UK, but they've undergone a very interesting shift in direction over the past few decades. Here's a sample of their stuff from the early 90s, while here's what they're doing now.

Oh that's pretty cool. :D

@Jori: The one I'm kinda embarrassed by was how much I was into Marilyn Manson from 1997-2002. To this day I can still recite all of Antichrist Superstar off the top of my head. After Holywood, I lost interest. I respect the man as an artist and as a decent actor (see: the final season of Sons of Anarchy,) but I don't care for his more recent stuff. Somewhere between him promoting his art, his absinthe, and the amount of drugs he's taken, I didn't feel a connection to his music these days.

Props for Celtic Frost. I'm not a huge fan of death metal with Cookie Monster sounding lyrics, but they have some interesting elements to them. The rest I'm kinda familiar with, but it's not really to my taste. The thing I don't like about Deathcore/Grindcore/Melodic Death Metal is that I feel that the meaning of the song is lost. I love the sound and the harmonies until the vocals kick in.

Still, nothing to be ashamed of brother. Even though it's been 19 years now, I remember how much high school could suck. It's always better to let your frustration and anger out via music. No matter what kind of music it is. Metal/Industrial works the best for me. Bands like Celtic Frost helped you get through the bullshit that is high school. It's all good. ;)

I'm not too embarrassed about much, maybe Linkin Park when I was a freshman in highschool :D

I've been looking for more badass sounding lead singers in metal or hard rock music, people like In This Moment or Flyleaf though I only know one song from them, called I'm So Sick, so not sure if they're really a good example. Halestorm's one for sure.

I love this band that is apparently a christian metal band... never thought I'd say that lol but they've got an awesome sound. Demon Hunter:

Spoiler

Slayer is awesome too, also been checking out the Contortionist. Don't much like their older stuff but their newest album is awesome, blend of hard elements and soothing ones in a really beautiful way.

As I said elsewhere, love Metallica. Hands down my favorite band. The House that Jack Built just might be my favorite Metallica song, but almost every song they've made after the late 80's is pretty fantastic imo.

Depending upon how you like your metal, this is a band that I respect a lot. They aren't usually my speed but the lead singer is a total badass. I admire her greatly.

Symphonic metal's got a lot of great female lead singers. Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation would probably be my favorite.

Do you like their new albums? I haven't really listened to them since the Silent Force, and that is over 10 years ago. Still love Enter, and Mother Earth.

There's a couple of great songs on Hydra but I'm kinda meh on the album as a whole. I love everything about the Unforgiving though, and I think the Heart of Everything is pretty great too. They all sound pretty different from each other.

A couple more links for Within Temptation. The thing is, Youtube's blocked in China and my VPN's acting up so I have no idea which songs Akrabra linked to and I'm not sure my links work either.

Paradise (What About Us?) ; from their last album, Hydra, also featuring Tarja Turunen, former lead singer of Nightwish.

Iron ; from second-to-last album The Unforgiving.
