I would like them, along with other facial features such as scars, freckles, moles, acne et cetera.

However, with tattoos, they are going to be on the face or neck area, which is an area I am not to keen on having tattoos placed. Not so much the neck but the face specifically. If there is a way we can apply tattoos to other body parts (which may never be seen), I would much prefer that rather than just having them assigned to the face.

Don't really like scars, they make characters look too edgelord. Looking at you Maxson from Fallout 4.

I don't see the point of having tattoos when they are going to be covered up by armor.  And this is coming from a guy who has 9 tattoos, 4 of which are visible.

Last year I made a topic about facial tattoos and people did not like the idea... Halo 4 did it right though with those futuristic glowing tattoos. Lord of Admirals looked pretty awesome.

If there is tattoos I'm hoping more body tattoos than facial one's. It's quite hard to make facial tattoo fit your character and lot less people IRL have facial tattoos compared to tattoos in body. Tattoo could be something that wouldn't be visible when character has suit/armor on, but with casual outfit or during scenes with less clothing like romance scenes tattoos could show. Or maybe neck and hand/finger tattoos for those that want to see them more ^^

Also scars, yes please. And bodily scars would be nice as well. I get it that changing characters height and size of body is hard with animations and clipping, but I don't think scars and tattoos should be problem in that at least.

Idk why I keep bringing it up on these forums. I just haven't caught up with the series in a while, and I can only buy them in Belgium. That's prbly the reason

One of the many reasons why I love them. They look cool and in a way add a little more character as well. It definitely helped make them stand out when compared to other video game protagonists.

Facial tattoos don't make any sense for human N7s, in my opinion. At the risk of offending someone (or more likely many someone's), I'll say that I've know about a half-dozen individuals with facial tattoos. All of these guys were pretty cool guys, and all of them had spent time in prison. Facial tattoos and human military seem at odds to me. Maybe if the backstory allows for some time outside or beyond the military? ME just doesn't seem like the setting for such ink like a more fantastical setting might be. Body tattoos could work, but it seems like a lot of work for a small pay-out. Probably better to divert those assets elsewhere.

Anyway, that's just my feeling. I'm fine with other gamers getting a range of tattoo options in the character creator, it that helps them feel more pleased with their character. My big wish is that BioWare finally gets the hair right, no matter what it takes or whom they must hire to accomplish it.

I agree, better hair before tattoos.

Tattoos are cool but would only really fit if our character joins a gang or sth. I am guessing that the human in the leaked gameplay is a gang member of some sort.

Got two cheetah's on my shoulder, a momma cheetah and cub but it's a big sis little sis for me. it's a remembrance for my older sis. Still need to go back when it's healed to have some text and a border put on.

This is a very cool idea. I don't have any tattoos but I was thinking of getting a remembrance for my older sister as well, it would be something to remember her by.

I agree with the suggestion that facial tattoos would be awkward in a military setting. But it'd be good to have some tactical warpaint that you can apply when you choose your loadout for the mission. As for tattoos, I'd rather have them on the arms and the body even if it doesn't show when in armor. As people have said, you can still have them when wearing the less formal clothing and Imo that would be more realistic.

Also I'd love to have scars, freckles and piercings! Freckles are always great and it'd be cool if we could have piercings like the female protag having a cute nose stud. And from the male perspective, it'd be great to have a better variety of facial hair and preferably ones that aren't made of concrete.

People recieve facial body modification for all manners of reasons with some pertaining to culture such as rites of passages or other age-old customs. People might connotate facial tattoos regardless of design with a current or former life of criminality but that's a misconception that can and have caused stigmatization including towards people who recieve theirs because it is their culture.

From what I know, most people tend to not want facial tattoos either because it hurts, it's stigmatized against and it can be hard to conceal as oppose to a tatto that is below the neck.

From what I've heard from people in actual militaries, the human military in Mass Effect does quite a number of things that are very at odds with actual militaries so facial tattoos would not be that much of an oddity, in my opinion, even if it is against most actual regulations since it already features other things that are equally against regulations.

We also know that tattoos are a thing in the Mass Effect universe as there are characters with 'em so it is an established element. James Vega, a member of the Alliance military, had a very visible tattoo on his neck which sets a precedent for a player character similarly being allowed a neck tattoo even if they are a part of a military.

Tattoos in the Mass Effect universe are also not just found amongst humans. Most turians wear facial markings that indicate their home colonies per custom that began during the Unification War and they seem to have no regulation against those kind of markings as turians in active military positions still have theirs. Interestingly, a lack of facial markings are stigmatized against.

I'm a bit curious towards something; do anyone know why facial tattoos are banned in some actual militaries? The most I could find about it pertained to parade uniforms.

I managed to find some more a bit after I posted these comments;

"Conformity in terms of unit cohesion. The military depends and thrives on the establishment and maintenance of a high degree of conformity within their ranks. This is one reason why they issue "uniforms", i.e. - a word that literally means "one shape".

This would depend on the squad make-up, I think, since the aliens onboard might have an exception clause but Ashley's uniform in Mass Effect 3 did not seem to match the standard Alliance uniforms. James Vega was additionally not bared from the N7 program despite having a very visible neck tattoo though that was in the neck and side area and apparently that is considered tolerable in some actual militaries.

Shepard, however, has been allowed to personally disregard uniform in Mass Effect 3 as they were able to wear non-uniform apparel onboard military vessels while on-duty and customize their field armor both in terms of item modification but also color modification. They also have been allowed to wear non-Alliance armor in Mass Effect 1 but I'll have to see whether that can be obtained prior to becoming a Spectre since if it is after, the Spectre occupation might add an exception.

"There are restrictions on the individual occupying special duty positions where they are more likely to be exposed to news media, foreign dignitaries, etc."

Considering how Shepard was allowed to behave around diplomatic personnel and sweet jesus' christmas cake, especially the media, I do not think I would consider this to be an applicable reason.

Note: I am not taking Mass Effect 2 into consideration as neither Shepard nor their squad were considered a part of an official military during those events as far as I can remember.

Same reason that special forces have "relaxed grooming standards" and access to better gear and equipment.  Also because it's a video game and anyone who asks my renegade shepard about not wearing standard issue armor is getting thrown out of the airlock.

As long as tats and scars are optional, I'm OK with that.

Personally, I prefer looking at a female silky smooth skin without the tats and/or scar flaws. But, since the ME:A sex scenes will show our female(s) wearing a  non-see through burka nightie, I guess I'm screwed either way. :P
