After dealing with the Nightmare at Adamant, you can go to Cole in the tavern and ask for his opinion about the events that transpired there.

At a certain point, he asks you if you are willing to kill him, should he become a demon or forget his purpose again. The Inquisitor can reassure him that they will kill him if necessary (gaining approval) or tell him that nobody will ever try to kill him (losing approval, because Cole doesn’t want to hurt anybody).

I only ever saw and picked the last choice, the “kind” one where the Inquisitor tells him they will not kill him.

Does anybody know what their dialogue is if the other choice is picked? (“Yes, I’ll kill you.”). I am curious to hear the Inquisitor’s tone and see Cole’s reaction, especially because he is happy to hear that. Even just reading the transcripted dialogue would be great.

For reference, here is a video where the kind answer is chosen. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find one where the Inquisitor uses the other.

I have always picked the 'I'll kill you' choice, and the tone is not one of anger or malice. The Inquisitor seems to feel for Cole's plight and really come across as caring enough to do what is necessary, if it ultimately comes to that. Unfortunately, I can't remember the Inquisitor's exact words though.

I want to say that she says : "It won't come to that," or "if it comes to that," or "I'll do what is necessary."

I think the Inquisitor's words are "Yes, I'll kill you." in a compassionate tone and Cole answers with "Thank you."

I just looked at two videos I made about Cole's "Subjected to His Will" quest, sadly I don't have that part of dialogue in them.

I believe the Inquisitor says, "If you start harming innocent people, I'll kill you." The tone is direct, but not harsh, simply, "This is what will happen." There will be some tonal variation depending on the voice actor. My Inquisitor is male and I use the British VA; he tends to be rather mellow, which is why I like him.

That said, I appreciate your dilemma, as I felt the same based on the paraphrase and was reluctant to pick it. This is one of the instances where I let meta information decide my dialogue choice.

In response, I think Cole just says, "Good, thank you," or something, and then emphasizes that he cannot be allowed to become a danger or hurt anyone. This is why he approves. It is the same line of thought as this banter with Cassandra:

Cassandra: If you are to fight alongside us, Cole, I expect you to follow orders. The Inquisitor believes you wish to help. But I will not allow you to threaten innocents.
Cole: Yes. Help the hurt, save the small. If I become a demon, cut me down.
Cassandra: Do not doubt me. I will do it.
Cole: Good.
Cassandra: You're...serious, aren't you?
Cole: Yes. I hope you are too.

Inquisitor (firm but calm): "If you start hurting innocent people, I will kill you."

Cole (relieved): "Good."

The lines after that are the same for both options, if memory serves:

Cole (determined and pleading): "Before was wrong, but that was when I didn't know. I can't not know again. No one gets hurt because of me. Please."

At first glance it seems nasty to say such a thing to what is potentially one of the Inquisitor's closest friends, but it's actually a matter of showing him respect and taking him seriously. He is a spirit faced with his worst fear i.e. the perversion of his nature and purpose, and knows very well how dangerous he could be. This is a recurring theme from the start for him, especially if you play Champions of the Just, and it's definitely a part of why I like and respect him so much. Cole makes no excuses for himself and does not want to be coddled. If the worst happened and he did turn, putting him down ASAP would be a final act of bitter kindness for a once-dear friend. (One that a mage Inquisitor in particular might sympathize with, given their own risk of becoming tempted or flat-out possessed by a demon on top of the temptations of power that every Inquisitor faces.)

Cole knows the dangers of being a spirit... he is a very practical view into the world of spirit/demons instead of the fairy tale view that Solas has.

It stands to reason of course... since Cole "walks the walk".

He knows that the essence of his being is not at all that of a mortal.  Mortals are creatures of the Earth (Thedas' label of "Earth") and spirits know the Earth as unmaleable - stubborn - etc.  Mortals don't change on a whim... but spirits can.

Cole takes the responsibility very seriously... and he totally changed my view of him as a spirit from when I read him in Asunder where he DOES become a demon.  He and Solas talk about how he became a demon for a while... but that he came back - and now he's determined to never do it again.

Though Cassandra is my favorite character in any Bioware game... Cole is my biggest change of heart (I was confident I would hate him pre-DA:I)
