I think BioWare should remove the cover based mechanic all together and go for a Modern Warfare 2 style third person gameplay, it was fluid and worked quite well and there would not be a need for totally fake cover boulders every second. BioWare can also learn to create a better multiplayer experience if they looked at Call of Duty, the credits for one take too long to grind to be enjoyable.

EDIT: Why is it wrong to suggest what BioWare can learn from different franchises? I'm just using Modern Warfare 2 as an example.

I hate the cover based combat guts, so I agree with this.

It would still be annoying! I hate the coverlessness

The coverness is rly cool in Mass Effect. Gives you more front views of your team during action too.

Call me a weakling coward if you must.

Wouldn't change much considering that the hard cover mechanic in ME3 is only used by inexperienced players who don't know how to exploit RHA and soft cover yet. It's more an annoyance that you occasionally get stuck to while attempting to sprint than a significant part of the gameplay meta.

These games actually could learn from older CoDs, because they were great games and mechanically sound.  How to achieve decent weapon balance would be a good place to start.

Well, Modern Warfare 2 is one of the greatest RPGs of our time. The OP's suggestion seems solid.

Eh, I'm not a great lover of cover-based shooting, but it's as much a part of Mass Effect as anything else, and it works well enough. Mass Effect actually has one of my very favourite implementations of it, anyway--for whatever reason, I've never been able to get into Gears' shooting, for example.

Honestly, if I had my way, I'd play as, more or less, a Vanguard with a sword, biotic charging/telespamming everywhere (Think Ciri in TW3)... But, well, that wouldn't be very Mass Effect, and I get why people who've enjoyed the way the rest of franchise has played wouldn't be into it.

To be fair, Modern Warfare's multiplayer popularized the "RPG mechanics," (XP/weapon progression/perks) we're still seeing in multiplayer shooters.

More on topic however, I completely disagree. The cover mechanics serve to slow Mass Effect's gameplay down so that squad tactics and power usage are more valuable in combat than simply running and gunning.

yeah that's why I like that kind of mechanic bein diasbled and onl having 1 hand on the controls makes it hard for me to be able to move and shoot at the same time so I fibnd the cover mechanics extremely helpful at slowing the game down and giving me a chance to take out my enemies

Hard cover, where you push a key and get a special animation to get into it, and then have different animations to lean out and shoot. In the video it is just using soft cover, right hand advantage and natural crouch to break line of sight and shoot around or above objects. The OP is not suggesting cover be removed from the game.

I don't know what reputation the OP has, but I don't understand how simply suggesting the cover system should be removed or modified can possibly be regarded as trolling. There are advantages with it. There would be fewer animations, the game would force players to play in a more fluid manner (although some might consider that a disadvantage), fewer hidden rules with less code to write, and maps would look more natural especially in outdoor areas.

Bioware have almost certainly nailed this down already as it would be central to how all the maps play and how the classes and enemies are balanced, but I think it is a perfectly fair thing to discuss.

Thats my point, most cover based shooters like Mass Effect, spec ops the line and gears of war have cleverly placed cover like giant boulders, walls ect...

I'd definitely be in favor of an evolution like the one you're suggesting, OP. To use yet another game as an example, I liked the way Tomb Raider implemented cover for gunplay and stealth. (I never played Rise of the TR, I'm referring to the initial next-gen refresh.) Laura automatically moved appropriately and sought cover as environment and circumstance dictated. It's hard to describe if you haven't played it, but absolutely fluid and natural in play.

The points concerning cover/squad-mechanics/game-speed are something to consider, but is ME really that fast a game? Even on Insanity difficulty, this series doesn't have overly difficult gameplay. I don't really think that an ever so slightly quickened pace would hurt gameplay all that much. Maybe it would even help. I do know that those horribly gamist-looking walls, "rock formations" and the like aren't going to work in the modern generation of games. These games are far too visually realistic. They will stick out even more horribly than they already have. It's time for them to go, and eliminating the "snap to cover" mechanic would be one obvious way to start down that road.

The thread isn't really about Call of Duty, though. I hate CoD. I don't play it. I didn't even know it had a 3rd-person option before watching the OP's video.

What do you think of replacing the "snap to cover" mechanic with something a bit more true to life?
