So it's only natural that the ark will have finite resources onboard that will be sufficient for the journey and for small scale field operations. Then again this is mass effect so space magic will probably peek it's head around the galactic corner and go "it's ight I got chu guise".

So assuming space magic doesn't make a return, when the resources run dry and THEY WILL run dry will apart of our mission be determining what fauna and flora are viable sustenance as well what among those could be used as first aid or even weapons? Will we see a return of the search bloopy blip blip mechanism to enable us to scan our surroundings? If so let us hope instead of a bloop blip we have a scouter like system but instead of powerlevels we see data. Will this mean fetch quest and will they be optional or end up being end game assets that while being optional they're really not.

On a side note, I had chipotle or as I like to say chip pottle for the first time ever today. It was rather good.

Firstly, I'd really rather not go hunting for space Elfroot, given the choice. I dunno, I guess some people enjoyed that whole resource mechanic in DA: I, but I'd be perfectly happy if I never had to gather x amount of random respawning resource ever again.

Secondly, there's actually very little 'space magic' about the idea of a large, self-contained ecosystem with no need for supply replenishment. Pretty much all the stuff you need to live - air, food, water - could in theory be recycled more or less indefinitely, provided you had something to provide light/power.

I hope space magic is back, imagine Mass Effect without, you know, the mass effect.

They called it the greatest discovery in human history.

The civilisations of the galaxy call it...

Nothing. Because it doesn't work, practical interstellar travel is impossible, and this whole franchise doesn't actually exist. Pack it up, people--we're done here.

Saying ME.A isn't gonna have space magic is like saying the the next Star Wars isn't gonna have the force. Or Game of Thrones isn't gonna kill off major plot characters. Or the next Michael Bay movie isn't gonna have explosions. Or...well you get the idea.

I am in between sides, I do somewhat enjoy scouring worlds for respawning resources simply because they extend the game especially in dais case with the war table missions. Oh 10 minutes until this wtm is done? Welp time to gather some elfroot. On the other hand it does get reallly old quicker than it should and I blame that on lack of variety and applications.

While that is true I suppose I still feel it would be finite due to all being connected. If power runs out and you're unable to find another way to bring power then supplies will dwindle quickly. I think air would be the major concern, filtration systems may have been built to last for so long and be able to handle a certain capacity so again births onboard the ark could add more stress to such systems and we'd have to shoot people out of the airlock.

yeah, that is true but who needs space magic when you're a biotic God like NIftu Cal?

The next Star Wars doesn't, because the next Star Wars is Rogue One and doesn't have a Jedi in sight.

As for space-food, that might work in a sandbox game like Skyrim or Fallout 4 but Mass Effect is a story driven game and I had enough of fetch quests in DA:I to last me a lifetime, thank you very much. Leave that to the behind-the-scenes Provisions officer and let me get on with the job of saving the Galaxy.

Ah, that's the thing: I don't really want the game to be extended by busywork/filler like gathering resources--and, in truth, I wasn't overly keen on the whole War Table mission time thing, either. I don't mind a long game, but I want that length filled with compelling, relatively unique content--The Witcher 3's absolute masses of compelling, well-developed quests being the best example I can think of right now. Oh, and for as long as it was, Dragon Age: Origins was pretty good about keeping the filler to a minimum, too. (I feel I should clarify that I do actually like DA: I, but only in spite of all the filler--I think it'd be a much better game with most of it taken out--or, alternately, replaced by proper, developed side-quests.)

The CO2 scrubbers - and, potentially, primary food source - in such an ecosystem would probably be some form of genetically engineered algae, and while they would indeed ultimately only be able to provide oxygen - and food - for a set number of people, there's no reason why they'd wear out over time--they'd just keep dying and reproducing. And that 'set number' could be vast indeed--potentially greater than the number of people the ship could physically hold, assuming they devoted enough space to the algae tanks.

Also, and this is just speculation, I reckon BioWare are gonna go with some form of suspended animation for the voyage, rather than a generation ship. It saves them having to factor in 200-400 years - estimated time it'd take to reach Andromeda using Mass Effect FTL, assuming the drive discharge problem could be worked around - of cultural and technological development aboard the ship. It's kind of a shame, 'cause I'd love to play a protagonist who grew up on the ship, as part of this spacebourne civilisation--I really enjoy that sort of thing. The colony-ship setting is one of my favourite bits of Macross 7 and Frontier, for example:

I suspect we'll just learn from the Quarians experience with their liveships, after all they've had 3 centuries to perfect the technology.

Bringing along seeds for crops and genetic materials to clone Milky Way animals seems like the smartest, most rational thing to do.

space magic. Yep, that's the unknown alright. Seriously though who knows what we'll find or do in the future.

I actually like this idea of needing to find food/resources in Andromeda. It depends on the way they implement it. I would not want it to be like the plants in DA:I because that can get tiresome fast. Instead of go to x planet and collect x of this plant and turn it in, they could set it up where this is side quest with at least some minor substance to it. Maybe you go to x planet and have to go to and scout out a cave or a certain valley with enemies, environmental threats, etc along the way to find a suitable food that x race can eat.

The idea of having an actual quest chain based around the search for resources, with a proper story, characters, dialogue and everything--that sounds fantastic. There's oodles of dramatic potential in the idea of needing a scarce resource - as the countless stories written around that very concept prove - and that potential would be thoroughly squandered by turning resource scarcity into a mechanic - bars to fill and such - rather than a story.

I don't think we will be searching for resources or anything. That would be quite tedious. But I do think we will have to scout some areas or planets or whatever, and scanning resources might be a part of those quests. Finding out if the air is breathable, taking plant samples for analysis in the lab, scouting for appropriate outpost locations, etc. If these are all part of a few side quests or whatever, that is fine.

Darth Vader will be in it and he uses the Force.

If Darth Vader is in Rogue One, I hope they do not reveal him at all in any trailer. It should be a surprise, and he should wipe-out the most badass characters we were introduced in the movie. But they could have other force sensitive fighters, like an apprentice or whatever.

Exactly!

The search for resources should actually be a huge part of the story in a game about the colonization of a galaxy. It could be that finding such resources is not really the PC's primary assignment, and happens incidentally to his or her main role. The search should be a huge part of the story, though, in some fashion, whether front and center or in the near background.

This is Mass Effect, so we are obviously going to end up leading a military or paramilitary unit at some point. Our characters could be called upon to protect expeditions aiming to confirm critical resources. We could be asked to hold critical resources against hostile action. Any number of story-based missions can be built around resource acquisition. I'd expect at least some of these types of things, maybe more than a few.

What I don't want to see is busy work and fetch quests. I didn't really think the mineral collection quest from ME1 was bad at all if it had been given a bit of exposition. Explain the purpose for our actions. We are flagging these sites for mining corporations to come in later and make use of them. A little bit of story can turn even simple collection quests into interesting window-dressing that adds verisimilitude.

No DAI fetch quests, though. Everyone knows what I mean. None of that, please. I do not want to collect X of Y in order to do Z. Have my lessers do that $h1t. I have important, interesting work to do (hopefully, since I'm playing ME and not DAI).

Really? In the interview with the Director I read he explicitly said there would be no force users and that's what attracted him to the film. He said they are too morally black and white and he prefered more morale ambiguity. A lesson Andromeda could learn from.

I was about to say this. The drama of the people in need of food and the run against time to get resources for the ark.

Hell, this could be one of the arcs of the main plot.
