Varric, author, rogue, businessman, perhaps charmer, or is he?
"Conniving little sh*t" – according to Cassandra.

Coming from somebody who is even stricter than Aveline Vallen, it's not much of a fair appreciation.

I think they both like Varric, as also I ... who does not? ![]()
Let me see Varric is charming, witty, smart mouthed, a liar, runs a spy network, is a Desher for the merchant guild, or so he claims but, he is a surface dwarf, therefore not a part of the merchant cast. He is a typical sociopath, charming, likeable but, it's all for his benefit and any caring for others is only because he knows he can manipulate them to his advantage by being a friend.
Personally I like befriending him, playing his game, use him for my benefit, two can play that game.
The Merchant Guild is a Surface Dwarf organisation, presumably started by exiled members of the Merchant's Caste.
While the Guild will never be legitimately recognised by Orzammar's Shaperate, because it controls pretty much the entire flow of trade between Orzammar and the surface, Orzammar cannot afford to bite the hands that feeds them by refusing to barter with them. This is like the reason why the Merchant's Guild (and the Carta with their smuggling racket) are considered such powerful institutions even on the surface.
It seems that Bartrand was able to wrangle a seat for House Tethras on the Merchant's Guild, which Varric inherited from him. This is why Varric holds the title of "Deshyr" within the Guild, essentially the Dwarven equivalent of a Lord. The use of Deshyr to denote leadership within the Guild also suggests it's heavily set up to be reminiscent of the Assembly in Orzammar... and based on what he saw in Origins, the Guild being like the Assembly would explain a lot of why Varric finds any excuse to avoid meetings.
yeah
Varric is one of the most selfless companions in the whole DA series. When he troubles teh protagonist with something personal, it's usual about something really important - something, that's not only about him, but about more grief danger, with the exception of going after Bartrand, I guess. And even there Hawke and every participant of that expedition has an interest in at least talking to Bartrand (possibly strangling him in the process), so even that is not totally selfish. He admits, that he would not make a good spymaster, because he cares too much about his people to put them in danger. He often helps people with little things (Merrill and her ball of twine, so she wont get lost in Kirkwall, treating Cole like a real child, finishing a novel, he does not even like for Cassandra, asking the inquisitor (whom he barely know at this time) how she feels, staying to help the Inquisition, despite being able to go back to Kirkwall - that's something, a sociopath would never do, because he would not even understand the importance of most of those things.
To me, Varric is one of the best companion characters, Bioware ever managed to create. It's just nice with all the drama (starting with Anomen and Keldorn and their family problems in Baldurs Gate 2 to Bastila and her big ego problems in KOTOR to Blackwall and his identity problem or Iron Bull and his identity crisis in DAI) to have a character, who is calm and balanced most of the time. Of course, the dramas are great too, but you need some counter to that. And that counter is Varric imo in the DA games.
yep sir ree!
