The AI sucks when handling dual dagger rogues, so mechanically speaking, Varric.

So give Cole a bow and spec him as an archer...

I loved Varric in DA2 but personally I find both Cole and Sera way more interesting in Inquisition.

Well if you're like me and don't like to spec followers out of their normal roles (ranged versus melee, or tank versus damage), then you simply need to decide which configuration you prefer to play with. I normally prefer as many ranged as possible, but that dropped off in DAI with my preferred party of myself (SnS warrior), Cassandra, Cole, and Dorian as the lone ranged; I picked these because I like the characters, and for no other reason. I might occasionally switch Cassandra for Varric, but not too often.

It also depends on the difficulty mode, I suppose. If you're playing on a harder difficulty you may want to go with a party that is designed for that, whereas a lower difficulty player has more freedom do be non-optimal.

Breaking canon to that extent hurts me more than seeing Cole get whacked around by AOE melee. At least Leeching Poison helps him heal mid-fight.

somewhere around these boards there is a way to set up Cole so that he back stabs everyone your tank is engaged with.

So does equipping everyone with guard on hit ;).

These statements are both true.

Varric has some support spells that give you damage and crit chance and .... This will effect your power so much. And because of the crit chance that he gives to all party members,he can help mages because they have flashpoint spell.

Cole has more damage but he dies soon. And he has some important dialogue with some characters that you can use.
But choose who you like ....

Varric because...well, he's Varric!

I still wish I could bring Varric with me wherever I go in real life...would make everything so much more fun.

I don't like Cole in that I think he's creepy violating your head without your permission.  He's also squishy as get out if you keep him as a DW - which I always do.  I figure Cole is a DW rogue because he wants to be one and I should keep him as such.  Also, if anyone is gonna dual wield it's gonna be me (the only way I rogue), so I never use him.  So Varric.  But mostly Sera if we're picking ranged rogues.  :)

I find Sera on daggers to be unstoppable.

But with Rogues, I'd say neither Cole nor Varric nor Sera....because I like to be a Rogue. :D

Varric. If you know how to spec him and maximize Bianca's attachments, dragons are at your mercy. In addition to that, elemental mines are a must for overall AOE damage. My Male Dwarf Rogue absolutely wrecks with the Artificer specialization, because it has upgrades that are an absolute must for critical hits and insta-cooldowns. Artificers are OP and broken.

For banter I prefer Cole (many cool things to say)
For fights I'd pick Varric (since Cole tends to bleed quicker than his peers Xp)

I've never been a big fan of Cole, he is probably my least used squadmate.
