Varric, and its not even remotely close. Cole is a knob who was given way too many lines of dialogue, his voice actor must work cheap.
Liked him in the novel, in the game, he's just a rambling, babbling douche... seriously, just shut the **** up already...
"Chickens, Moon beams, felt, Jimmy the pickle, lilac blood is everywhere..."
I swear, if you hear one in-game Cole ramble, you've heard them all.

Agreed with all of the Varric supporters. 11/10 favorite rogue tbh. Plus, I just find ranged rogues better mechanic-wise in general, unless I'm controlling them. I do love Cole, though...I wanted more out of his character in-game.
Cole because he is more interesting character, and can "read minds" of other companions so it's interesting.
A dual wielding rogue is devastating... as long as that rogue is in the control of the player. If you let the combat system run the rogue then it will likely be the first to die or you will spend most of your time trying to keep that one person alive. When it comes to non-player rogues, stick with the archers. Lots of damage and you don't have to save them every 5 seconds.
So, varric or Cole.... Varric.
Cole does have better banter though, but it's not worth the headache. So if you are just going to run around the map to find stuff, you can take Cole, but if you have something big coming then switch to Varric or Sera. I like Sera better to be honest. If you are dead set on using Cole, then wait till you can make some armor and weapons that will apply guard to him. He might survive long enough to make some kind of difference in the fight... maybe...
I LOVE Varric's personality, but I hate having to control him, I find him awkward to move around and I HATE using Bianca as a weapon, I'd rather use Cole as a controlable rogue.

Pretty much. Whenever I bring Cole along I find myself controlling him for most of the fights. And he is devastating, but when I don't he easily becomes the weakest of the team.
Gameplay wise Varric is better. His specialization might not be as effective as Cole's, but his absurdily powerful focus ability makes up for it.
