Why is there this idea that mages in Thedas are people who are mentally ill ? I mean, magic is part of the world so how can someone who have the ability to use it be mentally ill ? Is it because of the possibility of demonic possession and turning into an abomination ? Wynne was an abomination and she did not strike me as mentally ill.

The one poster is just using mental illness as an analogy (and not a particularly good one) and the other is talking about "solving the mage problem."
No one in-game has ever drawn a link between magic and insanity. In fact, a DA2 quest centred on a man who thought he was tormented by demons, but the Circle just dismissed him as a madman.

Yes exactly. I do not understand why some people would make the analogy between mages in Thedas and mentally troubled people in real life. Mentally ill people in real life cannot shoot fireballs from their hands.

I can see mental illness being related to mages who more prone to becoming abominations. But I do not see mental illness being related to a person being or becoming a mage.
The only "mental" differences that mages seem to have that non-mages do not is thier concious connection to thier Fade. Or alternatively phrased, a partially conscious connection to the part of the world that is not physical at all, but rather formed entirely by concepts like emotion and memory. A state of mind that permits them to view and alter reality in a way no normal man can. It's part of what permits them to reach past the viel--the metaphysical barrier that cleaved the world into two states of being.
But I don't see how that can be considered a mental illness--not unless people think being a mage is inherently an illness in and of itself (which some people do).

This. Recall that the Archivist at Vir-Darthara said that her spirit colleagues are unwell.
So there is case to be made that someone who is possessed or an abomination as having some form of mental issue and they need some assistance because the spirit can mess things up.
Having said that, being magical =/= being mentally ill.

OP have a point...most Mages in DA2 are mentally ill and doing mentally ill stuff...their mental state are always unstable, but blame the demon...."the demon did it!"

Quentin and Orsino are the best examples. One wants to remake his wife ala Frankenstein (this is wicked even for a Blood Mage) and other covers/helps said madman just for the sake of being a mage. After that reveal I found difficult to side with Orsino from a metagaming point of view, and even if I'm roleplaying Hawke as not having any idea of who "O" is, he always regrets siding with the Circle once this is revealed.OP have a point...most Mages in DA2 are mentally ill and doing mentally ill stuff...their mental state are always unstable, but blame the demon...."the demon did it!"

Whole Kirkwall totally crazy, not just the mages! Look on the templars and civilians too (remember Harimans [in the Exiled Prince DLC]).

But which group is crazier? Surely there are more than a few psychotic Templars (there's also Meredith) but at least they can't control people's minds (but I have to say Tanquility is a horrid practice). But well, maybe its just the city of Kirkwall itself the source of all craziness lol.Whole Kirkwall totally crazy, not just the mages! Why else do you think Justice went nuts in Kirkwall? THE FADE. It was seriously weakened in Kirkwall, so it drove everyone nuts...

The repression, the despair may spurs everyone extreme behavior. Look on Orsino (your example)! He was totally normal as long as there was hope.

Justice's turn do not needed Kirkwall's mad, Anders' templar hatred was more than enough.

Yeah he was even a good guy. But if he didn't supported Anders (before he blew up the Chantry), who was no Blood Mage, then why help a psycho like Quentin (the kind of guy that gives mages a bad name)? The repression, the despair may spurs everyone extreme behavior. Yes. And Justice would have remained Justice, if there is not merged with Anders. This has been clarified in several places. The point is: do not needed Kirkwall's mad for it. Well, okay, maybe it helped ...
