I mean the dog vendor being called Betyar. That's Hungarian for highwaymen. In fact, I once knew a dog called Betyar when I was a child.

I wouldn't be surprised if the name is a reference to something. However, I don't really think it's your example, OP. I'm not doubting the meaning of the word in Hungarian, but rather that that is what the developers intended with the name. It's also an anagram for "betray," but I fail to see the significance of that either without some other additional clue or happening, like it turning out that the mabari actually ate his owner, or something.
